Things you've always wanted to know an answer to...

great thread!

here's one that i've wanted to know for a very long time and I find it very hard to explain to everyone..so here goes!

If i stand up outside, look up into the sky and to the furthest i can see (the edge of the sky that I can see, 'the horizon'?).. can the sky that I can see there (clouds etc.) be seen by someone else far away if they look directly up into the sky..? If so, how far would that be? Because I don't think that you can ever really see right to the horizon..

Sorry if that makes no sense, but it has always baffled me :)

Well Adam, as the earth is spherical I'd imagine if someone was standing equi-distant point in the other direction they would see the same horizon that you are seeing - and Carl is right it would depend on atmospheric conditions etc.

What, you mean how far away is the furthest we can see when we, say, look out to sea?

That's an interesting one.

and finally, why is that little irish kid on x factor's name (eoghan) pronounced owen, and not eoghan?

HAHA! I was thinking the exact same thing the other day and as I work with an Owen, I asked him and he has no idea. He is a welsh Owen though so maybe its just a messed up Irish way of spelling it? When you say it how it is spelt it sounds nothing like Owen.

For an observer standing on the ground with h = 1.70 m (average eye-level height), the horizon appears at a distance of 4.7 km.

For an observer standing on a hill or tower of 100 m in height, the horizon appears at a distance of 36 km.

yeah, I suppose..

Just, kinda, if you look up into the sky.. how far can that same peice of sky (that sounds stupid) be seen from?

Could someone in france see the same peice of sky that I am seeing in Southend? Or is there too much sky?

Are these questions the rubbishest ever..? :)

Well, technically, the sky just keeps going up. The sun is in the sky, and you can see that from half the world at a time pretty much (with the exception of Wales)

Please see above!

Yes I spotted that after I posted. However, as that was one of only two things I can remember from school, I thought I would proudly post it anyway.

The other one was if you get caught smoking in the playground you get the cane. However I better not mention that or it might lead to a whole new thread, possibly entitled Should corporal punishishment return?

Thought this thread maybe needs bumping & bringing back to life.

Here's my question for the day.
Why does a Berocca capsule turn your wee fluorescent?

Berocca causes your urine to be deep yellow in colour but it is completely harmless. The colouring is due to the excess vitamin B2 being removed from the body through the urine.
