Things you've always wanted to know an answer to...

I also find it very hard to think about what happens after death.

Heaven?
Nothing? Do you know that your nothing?
Does your soul just go and leave you?

What makes apples turn brown so quickly when their flesh is exposed?

Apples and other produce contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase or tyrosinase that reacts with oxygen and iron-containing phenols that are also found in the apple. The oxidation reaction basically forms a sort of rust on the surface of the fruit. You see the browning when the fruit is cut or bruised because these actions damage the cells in the fruit, allowing oxygen in the air to react with the enzyme and other chemicals.

The reaction can be slowed or prevented by inactivating the enzyme with heat (cooking), reducing the pH on the surface of the fruit (by adding lemon juice or another acid), reducing the amount of available oxygen (by putting cut fruit under water or vacuum packing it), or by adding certain preservative chemicals (like sulphur dioxide).

It depends - your body just rots. The soul is more a philosophical/theological question, one which is essentially unanswerable.

For an observer standing on the ground with h = 1.70 m (average eye-level height), the horizon appears at a distance of 4.7 km.

For an observer standing on a hill or tower of 100 m in height, the horizon appears at a distance of 36 km.

In the general case assuming the planet is a perfect sphere and no atmospheric effects:

Radius of planet = r
Height of observer = h

theta = Angle between observer and horizon (in radians) = arccos(r/(r+h))

Distance to horizon measured on earths surface = r x theta

= r x arccos(r/(r+h))

BTW - there is an interesting Horizon on BBC2 tonight for any maths fans.

What have I done?

Invited MK to expound on a vaguely theological debate!

What I'd like to know is this, is the amount of gas an individual produces (at either end!) directly proportionate to the amount of carbonated liquid consumed - or is it just coincidence that the more carbonated drinks you have the more gas you seem to produce?

Not me, I hasten to add, can't stand the stuff!

Two schools of thought: You die, that's it. You die, that's not it. Neither one of those outcomes can be proved.

Liberal pantywaist version of 'is there an afterlife?':

Definitely not, unlesss you just blew up a load of innocent people in the name of the religion of peace, since you will go on to rape your 72 children in Islamist heaven, because you did no wrong as it was all George W. Bush's fault. Interestingly, it's still Bush's fault, because you can't blame the Kenyan for anything. Christians are just stupid and their faith is predicated on hating queers, blacks and scientists.

Hope this helps.
