Post-Match Thread and Ratings York City 3-0 Southend United

Big fan of Kevin and all he has done for this club over the years, especially the last couple. In fact any negative words against him I actually struggle to understand given all he has done.

Also didn’t watch the game or have any specific opinion on it other than the result is not unexpected.

I don’t want to see him sacked, he has earned the right to have a proper go at it next season. But…and it is the first time I am saying anything negative about this management team…something mentally needs to change over the course of the second half of this season with the current squad, because right now they look lost. I stand by the management now but this window is absolutely crucial and if nothing changes in attitude, then something may need to change off the pitch.

Football has moved on from defensive managers and defensive play styles.. we’re now in the era of attacking football and going out today with a clear intention of not conceding instead of scoring hasn’t worked all season, hasn’t worked today and will not work going forward.

The ten point deduction and the embargo galvanised the team. Strange thing to say but we haven't looked the same since we were able to buy players again. Not one player bought in the last twelve months has improved the team.
But is that the players or the way Kev tells them to play. A lot of players come here and start off well then deteriorate.

Top of the table York, great looking team with power at the back and pace throughout the side. I reckon they had 7 chances to score and we had three. Says it all about us.
I fully back Kev Maher to turn this around and i feel very strongly about some of the pathetic critcism he gets on here, some people talking utter garbage.
York are a very good side and a beating was always on the cards, we are having to rebuild big time, in fact rebuild the whole club. Its a difficult task but we know now and again we get get great results under Kev. My view is that the 2nd half of the season will be better, if its not then i'm definetly in the Maher out camp.
Said it a million times on here, done it to death, but we were put down to bare bones and then transfer embargoed to the Nth degree.
I thought the lads looked tired out there today, Gus had a great chance to score as did others. Our misses were as bad as theirs. Our defence looked incredibly shaky from start to finish and its high time we had a big fella at the back to win everything in the air. Crowther got ripped a new one today, really all at sea. Bridge looked slow and struggled with having enough strength to cross a ball. Maher had the summer of '23 to sort a decent squad before the transfer embargo shut his door when the season started and look what he did with that squad. I feel he REALLY needs a chance to do it again. Wont be replying to people who no doubt will say i'm nuts, cos i'm having a break on the A1. Up the Blues we go again.

Regardless of misses of targets we largely have the exact same squad that would of been playoff bound without a ten point deduction
The big difference is goals we are now conceding. Kensdale and Cardwell (his importance defending corners is often missed) gone. And I would add Miley who has been injured, and struggling to regain form. The spine of the team.

Well just got home from watching that performance. I thought I better have my dinner before I make any comments. I do not feel any better for the delay in posting!
The first half could have been worse where two defensive errors should have resulted in goals. We got away with both and then they missed a sitter. We could/should have scored from one of our only two half chances in that half.
The second half started the same as the first. We kept them at bay for a while whilst creating very little ourselves.
The defence then went to sleep and did not clear a corner, from which York scored. Everything went to pot after that, confidence appeared to go and York took advantage of this and scored a quick second. It appear the defence was all over the place again, yet Collin should have saved that near post header.
The third goal was a replica of the second goal with the defence having a tea break and Collin reacting slowly. The game petered out after than, although we had two/three clear cut chances to score but missed them all.
So what can be done to stop this rot? Crowther has to be dropped/rested. Jack Bridge the same. Kendell has to start along with G Wind. GSM was again not at his best. Gubbins, on this show must start. Cav Miley, huffed and puffed, no real end result. Just why does someone not have a decent shot. There were some occasions when this was possible but it rarely happened. Rating the team would result in low scores for most of that team.
I am so depressed at the moment that I might kick the cat if I had one.
Instead it is back to the bottle!

…and something else will require a significant upgrade to the current squad…although it was only last year that such a “defensive”style wasn’t entirely ineffective

I want to see who the chicken was for the first goal. Turned his back, instead of attempting to block with possible pain involved.
Cav Miley I believe. Just watched rerun of game on DAZN not knowing the score and not travelling due to ill health. Cav should have just block tackled him instead of turning his back and more of less giving the striker a free shot. Other 2 goals were just as bad. Identical tame headers at the far post for which our defender in front of the attacker stood and lamely jumped and let the ball just over his head and whoever was marking the attacker let him run in front and get there first. Collin was hiding on his line behind other players and then feebly tried to get to the ball and treated it like a hot potato and let both squirm in. All 3 goals easily avoidable with just a minuscule of commitment and desire, which was sadly lacking, fuming!

The positive is York were struggling to avoid relegation last year. A summer with the owner investing the necessary £££ to rebuild and bring in quality has brought them to where they are now.

That was a lot easier for him though, their stadium was ok and he was not having to pay off all the creditors of a former chairman.

COSU have had their hands tied by having to look at other spending. Hopefully the new member will help to inject some cash into the playing budget.

I think the telling thing for me is that after watching that game this afternoon, there isn't one Southend player who gets in that York side.....and I include Ralph and Taylor in that.

I thought York were terrific all afternoon. Their passing, pace and movement was a cut above what we had to offer.
They could have scored 3 times in the opening 20 minutes, but from some poor finishing/ decision making.
Crowther had a shocking first 30 minutes and looked a complete liability.
Batty, Hunt, Felix and Sinclair in Midfield were all excellent and we found it impossible to live with them. They were all constantly on the move, ready to receive the next pass. They played through us and around us all afternoon, creating overloads in wide areas at every opportunity.
Defensively, they were strong and physical and passed the ball out from the back confidently.

As strange as it is to say, after a 3-0 defeat and praising the opposition to the hilt, I didn't actually think we played that poorly overall. Yes, we conceded 3 awful goals which again highlighted for me why we urgently need a couple of leaders in our side, but in fairness we kept plugging away and should have bagged ourselves 2 or 3 goals....Kendall's chance in injury time being the most glaring miss after good work from Bonne and Bridge.

York were just better than us all over the pitch.....and that's tough to accept for any Southend supporter.

We do need a serious overhaul in midfield and in wide areas.
As good as Gus and Bridge have been over the last couple of years, their lack of pace and directness mean our strikers generally feed off scraps.

I think it could take another 18 months until we're seriously ready to challenge.
However, I also still need convincing that Kev does actually know what we need to make us into a more formidable outfit.
