Post-Match Thread and Ratings York City 3-0 Southend United

Under Maher we have had long unbeaten runs but also some long periods without a win (I feel like we went into double figures a couple of years ago).

The difference with next season is that, with Ron gone, we become a big player in the transfer market at this level. Agents start taking calls from 01702 numbers again when they know their client will be receiving their wages on time.

If we can get 6 top quality players in, we can build something very quickly.
When has this club ever bought in six top quality players in one window who have all made enough of an impact in the first season?

This is excluding Sturrock’s first season when we started on 2 players btw.

Well if we're going to do at any time, its probably more realistic than ever to think this summer now Ron has gone.

We've got to do good business. Top 1-2 picks across the board. We know from @BoyWonder2 what sort of names that whiteboard has had on it and we've missed out on, so dont think its that unrealistic.

Suspect we are a huge draw for players in this league.

Just because it hasn't happened before doesn't mean it shouldn't happen now. Barnet signed, like, 7? players before the Euros kicked off this summer.

Clubs that are serious about promotion get their business done early. We need to be doing that in the summer.

Maher hasn't bought in one single player who has been successful in 2024! I don't believe there is a player in our current squad who isn't underachieving currently. (GSM was carrying this side early in the season).

Not Morton? Not Wind? Not Pepple? Not Bonne (sorry that last one was just for fun)

Same same same same

Big question being asked now finally by the majority... Can this manager (purposefully non specific to remove prior emotion).turn this around?

A winning team whether it plays attractive football or not is the sum of the mentality, style, formation and the players.

Mentality - don't lose mentality which is apparent in the vernacular used and style/formation/ player choice

If were truly going to move forward it might pay to think about how we can win the game and thinking about strengths. Classic half empty glass full conversation.

Style - possession, slow build up and then direct/long ball when prevented from moving ball forward

Rhetorically is this the right way to play in this division? Getting the ball forward quicker whether speed of play or long ball historically more effective especially combined with pace. Combined with lack of players to be intelligent to activate the game plan can be found out as the ball moves backwards more than forward.

Formation - 352 as a dominant setup (ie ignoring transition) based on the players picked

Can be seen as attacking or overly defensive depending on the combination of the other factors. Predominantly defensive in our case based on mentality, style and players. We only tend to have 3-4 attacking players with their starting positions further back and defensive responsibilities greater ie bridge/coker.

Players - larger squad with 2-3 key players moves on.

A number of players playing out of position. Ralph lb playing lcb. Crowther RCB playing middle. Taylor dmc or rb playing rcb. Gus not sure if he's a defender or a rm. Bridge am/lw playing lwb. Okay Ralph at lwb and we lose pretty much all creativity (why bridge keeps being picked).

Are players the best no. Are they incapable? No and they've showed they can play when given the opportunity.

Results - 6 wins in 23 games
Accountable for mentality, style, formation and players? - The manager and his coaching team.

Expectations? Probably more than the current situation with 7k potential gate per home game and prior history.

History - in the past.

Next steps?

KM, in previous seasons, did a sterling job supporting and galvanising the team when off-field antics impacted heavily on the playing situation. The team gave their all and were found wanting as each season ended. We had long runs unbeaten, though heavily littered with draws, and even then it was clear we were the masters of our own downfall. Shackled, lumbering, pedestrian, predictable play that held us back. The entertainment value was restricted to seeing which ex-player was being led out to take applause and the chap in the South Lower yelling ' dodgy keeper!' at the oppo goalie. So many big crowds and the sound they make is chatting with one another because the performances have often been so boring.

100% I wanted Maher to succeed but he hasn't. His way is not working and that is proven by what we all see on the pitch. Sentiment cannot play a part in what happens next. KM was given the keys to the City and doesn't know how to unlock defences. His contribution to this club, player and coach, has been outstanding and worthy of a testimonial. His ability to take us any further is a serious doubt and concern. If he leaves now it will be with a thank you from the club and fans. If he carries on it will only diminish his image and tarnish memories.

We do not have the best team in the division, though on it's day it can come close, but it is way too good to be serving up such awful fare. I, like so many on here, will continue to attend because I am a fan. I will, until change is made, be disgruntled and feel let down being constantly subjected to such a dire spectacle.

We are too easy to play against. That for me is the worst part, we are a soft team.

Yes we have great support, an EFL stadium but we are an easy team to play. Still no legs in midfield, crap at both attacking and defending set pieces and can be either bullied by the non footballing teams or passed around by the top footballing teams.

York adopted the same, dour, play out from the back tactics but the difference is that they always had an outlet with someone in space in midfield. Having got that far the momentum was largely forward. The middle of the park needs fixing.

We have family staying for a long weekend starting yesterday, so, although I had the game on the TV, watching it was only now and again. Up until we conceded the first goal I thought we defended quite well, but after that the flood gates opened and I turned the TV off at 0-4, only to find that we only lost 0-3, small mercies eh? My son in law said it reminded him of Birmingham on a bad day (he's a Brum supporter). So I'm going to push the memory of that game into the background and enjoy our weekend instead, life's too short. Me and her will start again on Boxing day.

These performances are going to start hurting COSU where it hurts soon…. In the pocket via reduced attendances.
The core will always go and watch, but the rest will soon vote with their feet.
Once Christmas and new year is gone I wouldn’t mind betting that we start to see attendances in the mid 5000’s on a Saturday and low 5’s on a tuesday night.

That’s not in the plan.

It’ll be a brave decision if and when the consortium make that call.

I feel like some like Kyle Taylor or James Olayinka would fit in well. Both free agents. Pedder who we had on trial in the summer still hasn't got a club

Currently; Husin is looking poor, Morton hit and miss, Coker OK, Miley way off it, KAF hardly got a proper sniff, Moncour not the right fit.
