Lots of charities are, the salaries of the CEOs and board of many of them would feed a small country for a week too often.
And, unfortunately, even the likes of some local charities don't watch the pennies on their self indulgencies.

I suspect there is a lot of duplicated expense in the charity sector - I am sure many executives like the status that comes with the job and resist attempts to consolidate with similar organisations.

I remember watching the banquet of Great British Menu (or similar) and a few charities had been invited. Of course the chief executives accepted the invitation. It would have been a nice gesture to offer the invitation to an unpaid volunteer.

It's probably also true that a new charity will have high set up costs. Once that is out of the way the percentage that actually goes to good causes should increase. It might be that Sir Tom's case isn't as clear cut as it sounds, but we'll have to wait and see.

BBC Breakfast bloke reckons the average petrol price across the UK is 148.5. Not round here it isn't mate. My local Esso garage was charging 151.9 yesterday and it wasn't the only one I saw, bloody outrageous:Angry:

Hence the word average.

Dodgy takeaway last night ?
It's the kebab or fried chicken places that are the worst. Incredible that when they announce the food hygiene ratings for the Southend area, there's so many with one star out of five, and even worse, no stars. The owners and staff should be forced to go on a course to show them how to handle and store food properly, and what happens to the food and the public if they don't.

One in Benfleet has the salad in front of the meat so that raw meat has to be lifted over the salad before it goes on the grill.

Any drips and that is a potential dose of food poisoning for anyone eating salad...

In many cases low ratings are caused by poor management rather than poor hygiene.

That said it should be mandatory for all establishments to prominently display their hygiene rating

I was talking to a guy who owned a takeaway (5 stars before you ask), and his view was rather different. He reckoned 1 star was worse than 0 stars in some cases. His reasoning was interesting: one star implies you know what you have to do, but are wilfully not doing so. 0 stars (in some circumstances) could be because you don't know what it is you should be doing.

Ah! A better class of poisoning!
