Walker, Waldron, Pepple, Bonne.

Bridge and Moncur giving options too.

Do we need a forward? I’d say 4 players covering 3 positions at the back when we’re playing 2 games a week is more of an issue.
2 are injured, 1 due back soon (apparently) and the other a month away (apparently)

1 is lacking match fitness and will take a month or so to get up to speed

1 is young and very inexperienced and cannot be relied upon (yet) to play week/week out and score regularly

I’d say we definitely need a striker, even if only for a month or 2

Not entirely sure that Effiong is an answer or indeed would be good business. Sure he has had some good years, but also some mediocre years. I would be more keen to bring in an extra defender, so that the inevitable injuries to any of Taylor, Ralph, Crowther or Gubbins are not covered by Jack Bridge dropping back. That would be a backward step after his performance Tuesday.
I suppose it depends on what kind of 'answer' you're looking for. Surely the perceived main goalscorers would be Walker and Bonne as they have done that at this level. So you're then looking for top notch squad players that can come in and be effective and make a difference when needed. Effiong is that player for sure. His size, presence, pace and unpredictability can cause havoc. Especially against those sides we are finding it hard to break down.

You mention mediocre years. Most players will have those until they find their feet and rhythm. He hasn't had a mediocre year for over 4 years. He produced a consistent output for 4 consecutive seasons. 62 goals in 114 games is a very good return. You aren't getting much better than that at this stage of the season unless you're paying top money.

If Braintree no longer see Effiong as a starting option and have also reassessed their wage bill and want to reduce it moving him will be one of their priorities.

If we offer to pay Effiong what we consider to be the going rate for a player of his age, experience and ability while this will not be an insignifcant sum it will likely not cover what he is earning now. For Braintree accepting our contribution to offset their costs must be a better proposition than having him sit on the bench on full wages.

Obviously they will hold out for as much as they can squeeze out of us but their negotiating position seems less than ideal. There also seems to be no incentive for them to draw out the talks.

Common sense (not always a factor in professional football) suggests he will be with us sooner rather than later. Of course, everything would change if another club were to show interest.

With budgets having been set and squad sizes determined some clubs might no longer be in a postition to pursue Effiong even if they wanted to. Paradoxically, the seeming disasters of our inability to sign players in the immediate close season as well as the departures of HC and OK might now be the factors that allow us to sign the experienced striker.

With no inside knowledge on this, I think the next centre back we bring in will be a project, not a starter, like Kensdale when we initially brought him in and Brooklyn was viewed as one too.
Sounds the right way to go to me ac has stepped up to be first choice so a project be cheaper and good idea.

Well we have the option of Ralph, Gubbins, Crowther & Taylor at the moment. If we stick with the same line up as the last two, Ralph could drop in if there was an injury with Bridge returning to LWB, so in the interim we are well covered.

Getting a “project” will allow them time to adjust to the step up, get them up to speed, and settled in without expecting instant results.

Plus, if we want a centre back to start over those other four, he will be on a decent whack. We don’t need to throw that at a 5th CB.
