Yes some story. Bit of an outlier and shows not impossible even if likely. But raises another issue as you say, you get up you need the resources to stay up. Sadly Sutton may never see the heady uplands of the EFl again..,Sutton United got promoted in season 2020-2921 Now just above us in table
They were then called the Leicester of the division. Not piles of money , so something of a rare outlier .Their chair had been a steady hand for over 25 years, battling to make them sustainable, He did that to some extent, There plastic pitch helped and hindered as they were getting £200,000 a year according to him, to hire it out ! Would we hire out ours?
Going up meant they had to get a grass pitch. They got their approx £1m for going up into the EFL but got hammered then on the cost to them over £550,000 just to provide an acceptable pitch. Their Chair said this as really tough and didnt help with sustaini8ng them in the league. Fortunately that at least is a problem we dont have
had been rising up through the leagues and the season before getting promoted were designated 15th place as the season ended due to Covid So shows you how quickly you can turn it around
So they set out the following year with a large squad of 29 ! Made up incidentally with 15 youngsters aged 20 to 24 and some older Gnarlies.
The big contributor to Suttons promotional success also came from their Transfer market move for good LOANEES , 2 strikers , Isaac Oloafe on loan from Millwall and David Wilson. (Between them banging in 21 goals ) Other loanees joined the pack.
They had 6 Centre backs to choose from, scoring a few actually, like 4 a season, , 4 left backs and 2 right backs, 5 midfielders who s also cored regularly, like Harry Beautyman 24 goals in 88 appearances. Husin?, 3 wingers and SEVEN strikers listed. (This years squad size 25 )
I'm perplexed that people think that we have hammered the budget with the second smallest squad in the league.I’m perplexed by those who support the quest for sustainability, and not spending therefore on the team, and in the short term not competing with a number of the promotion hunting teams who are throwing money around, and yet at the same time don’t cut the same slack to Kev who then has to continue to perform with one hand tied behind his back. Despite it all we are 3 points off Halifax in 8th.
There were some who suggested the plan would be hold fire until Jan and then invest if the playoffs were achievable- which they are?
In the longer term it’s possible to build a team in a more sustainable fashion that can compete “on the cheap” (relatively). But it will take time - over a fruit drink summer for sure.
Meanwhile it’s like the Guinness advert- with us hoping good things really will come to those that wait…
Something doesn’t add up for sure.I'm perplexed that people think that we have hammered the budget with the second smallest squad in the league.
Some teams have 10 more players than us but apparently we are breaking the budget.
We aren't asking for 250k signings or players on 5k pw like Wrexham etc.
But let's have a squad that can compete and have players in reserve. Can we even field a full bench Wednesday and Saturday?
We are told that we have the best scouting team in the league. We'll I'm underwhelmed so far.
We obviously aren't trying to sign the best up and coming talent in the non league circuit. That's what we were hoping for. Real unrealised talent that can become a star with sell on value.
Let's just have decent squad depth a team capable of entertaining and giving 100%
Surely thats not too perplexing
Has there been any communication from COSU at all in recent weeks? Seem to have gone very quiet since the new investor/director came on the scene.Something doesn’t add up for sure.
If it’s because our finances are absolutely ruined for the year thanks to he who shall not be named, then COSU should be transparent about it.
They were also very visible pre and post match in the pubs etc but haven't seen any of them for a whileHas there been any communication from COSU at all in recent weeks? Seem to have gone very quiet since the new investor/director came on the scene.
TL did a q&a with the trust just last weekHas there been any communication from COSU at all in recent weeks? Seem to have gone very quiet since the new investor/director came on the scene.

I believe he’s currently back in Australia.Saw Justin before the Hartlepool game behind the West stand talking to a fan
Yes I appreciate that and that he is the CEO but he was given a very easy ride. My comment was more directed towards other members of COSU, notably JR who have been quite prominent in public in the past but seem to have receded into the backgtound recently.TL did a q&a with the trust just last week
He is until late February but John Watson was in The Shrimpers bar last week chatting away and then went to the Far post bar.I believe he’s currently back in Australia.
Going by this we missed out on Romain Esse to Palace as well thenBoston have managed to get a striker in (Jimmy Knowles) before they play us. Played 21 games this season for Accrington with 2 goals. 19 goals last season in national league north. Only 23. We missed out there
I wasnt at the q&a so no idea if he was given an 'easy ride' or not or if there were any off record answers etc.Yes I appreciate that and that he is the CEO but he was given a very easy ride. It's hard to tell wether the players we have are good enough for play offs or if its the way we play that hinders us.Interesting that Currie has done the pre-match conference today. Maher has been very tetchy as we know and probably didn't want to answer questions about the lack of incomings.
It's interesting though because from an owners perspective, on paper we technically have 4 strikers available. It's by no means as desperate as last season with Kabongolo and Vilhete up top. Many owners may look at what we have an say, get on with it gaffer. Walker was bought from a league 1 side for a fee and has scored goals at this level, Kendall bought for a fee from this level, Waldron bought for a fee and was free scoring in the leagues below and Bonne who should be in his prime and has played his career in the EFL.
We all want better and we certainly need to improve, but the owners may just say, you have enough to get on with.
The way we play hasn't changed from last season, when nobody was complaining about it and we were scoring plenty of goals. For a few reasons the balance of the side hasn't quite clicked this year and when you constantly have teams coming here setting up to park the bus and hoping for a goal from a set piece, it's not pretty. Some of these posts....

I've seen far too many games this sesaon where we have been awful, and I still cant tell it thats down to how we play or individual profiles.

Oh I definately agree, which makes me believe the players are mostly at fault. But unfortunatley were in a new season and teams have identified how we play. Players not taking any risk whatsoever and that makes me believe its Kevin dictating that. The way we play hasn't changed from last season, when nobody was complaining about it and we were scoring plenty of goals. A lot of the recent moans are puzzling as they are coming out after three wins in a row, one of which was a 4-0 drubbing. Clearly things are improving from the disappointing start to the season and if they continue to on the same trajectory, we'll all have a much more enjoyable second half of the season.
I can't argue with the bold comment above, some of the home games early season were truly dire, but I am pretty certain nobody is actively trying to play like that.
