The Essex CCC Thread

Just had an email confirming we have signed Mark Hardinges from Gloucester ahead of the Twenty twenty competition!

Fairly useful IIRC and can bat and bowl! Going to need as much help as poss without Ravi, Fossie, Naps and RtD for most of June!

With Prior injuring his finger it would be a handy time for Foster to get some runs....

And on this point, I'm glad to finally be witnesses the change in media opinion who have for years been holding up Chris Read as the great purveyor of wicketkeeping skills. He is barely getting a mention these days and it is our own Foster who is recognised for being the sublime keeper of his generation.

This from the Guardian;

Collingwood will remember his excursion into keeping with affection; he will not, however, be contemplating a career change. Like many of us who have marvelled at the glorious simplicity of the work and art of Taylor, French, Jack Russell or James Foster, Collingwood discovered that "this keeping is not quite as easy as it looks". With some relief it's back to backward point for him at Headingley on Thursday

Very frustrating yesterday. The fact that Danny was 4th top scorer said it all. 5 players (Pettini, Walker, Flower, RtD and Middlebrook) all failed big time with the bat and only Chopra and Fossie looked safe out there. Fossie went when he tried to play one of his only big shots and i think he tried to attack a bit too early as 192 didn't seem like it would be enough. However, two in two from Danny turned the game back in our favour at 79/5 but Law and Redfearn batted very well and with their 100+ partnership, won them the game. Danny, Masters and to an extent Napier and Middlebrook bowled well but Wright & RtD were poor (both with batt and bowl!) 230 would have been enough, but it was never to be ...

D-day for Essex today, either a point against Lancashire, or Derbys failing to beat Glamorgan will see us through. We could even go through on NRR if we lose and Derbys win, but it would be tight.

Essex v Lancs - Lancs 214/7 off 50 overs.

Glam v Derbys - Derbys 211ao off 49.1 overs.

Both games could go either way...........

Glamorgan 84-4 chasing 212 to win.

Essex 25-1 chasing 215 to win. Pettini out for 3, he needs some runs sharpish otherwise he's going to have to go. Cook 8*, Chopra 11*

The taffy's now need 73 off 15 overs with 6 wickets remaining

OR

We need to chase down 215 and are 62-1 off 19 overs.

Both went our way in the end ... and rather stupidly in the quaters, we are away to Lancs!!

How the **** does that work? I thought there was a rule that teams in the same group couldn't face each other in the next round. Having beaten Lancs twice hopefully we won't have too much to worry about.

After a few weeks of poor results, Essex have got themselves into a good position in an exciting match against Kent (who beat us whilst following on earlier in the season I think).

Kent now 328/8 needing about 450 to win. Special mention to Pettini for getting a much needed century, and also Alistair Cook, who took a wicket to get rid of the well set Denly as Kent looked well placed to chase down the target. Come on, two wickets to get boys....

Anyone know who the top Saffer batsman is that we've supposedly lined up to replace Danish?

AB De Villiers i believe ... would be a fantastic signing IMO, i note we have fewer batting bonus points than any other side in Div 2 (most bowling points mind) but the addition of AB will surely help rectify this
