The Essex CCC Thread

We've enforced the follow on.

It must have been a marginal decision to do so.

I think it will require at least two wickets tonight to justify it.

The England selectors would have noted that Foster 'bottled it' on 99 and only managed 4 catches! Does anyone know why he has been completely cold shouldered by England for 6 years or so?

Well after last saturday's debacle against Kent, the Essex selectors have made 2 changes. Middlebrook and Napier in for Masters and Cook. Mickleburgh opens the batting with Chopra.

Essex won the toss and decided to bat, latest score 62-0 in the 25th over. Chopra 33*, Mickleburgh 21*.

I'm a bit surprised that Masters has been left out, although Middlebrook and Napier will strengthen the batting. Do you know if Northants have included Panesar after his omission from the England team?

Interesting decision to react to losing having been bowled out cheaply by dropping a batsman and going in with just 4 specialist bats.

Hadn't noticed Masters has been left out. Big surprise, although Northampton's pitch probably doesn't suit him (although the overhead conditions probably do). Six bowlers seems excessive to me.

Who else would have come in, YB? Gallian and Flower have played a fair bit recently, and at their age we can't expect them to play 5-6 days out of 7.

Cook and Bopara obviously selected by England, and so we don't have a lot of batting left.

Well the 6 bowlers are going to have to bowl well, as we're now 210-6.

I'd have Flower in (it says a lot as I was pretty anti-Grant Flowera few years ago, but he's currently easily one of our best five now Bopara and Cook are England men).

If they can't play 5 or 6 days out of 7, rest them for the one-dayers, maybe draft in Westley at weekends.

I'd have Flower in too (and likewise, I couldnt stand him not so long ago) but I read the other week he's not going to play a lot of 4-day cricket this season.

Very surprised Masters has been dropped too. Looks like we are prioritising the one-day stuff again this year.

What has happened to Maunders?

I asked this the other day (not sure it was necessarily on here), he's got a back injury or something and is out for another month or so.

Thinking about it, Middlebrook has been picked as a genuine all-rounder. So bad is Gallian's batting that Middlebrook will score as many (few) as Gallian, plus Northampton is normally a bunsen and just as importantly our catching has been abysmal and Middlebrook has a decent pair of hands. I think it is as much for the latter that he's been picked.

Where's Westley, is it Durham? As a first year student is it exams or alcohol that rules him out?

Thanks didn't know about Maunders.

It's odd about the catching as one thing Essex are normally good at is a fielding side.

Westley I believe is at Durham so I guess it may be exams that will rule him out.

Glamorgan v Essex in the FPT has just started on Sky.

How fat is their opener Cosgrove? He's massive.

Glamorgan 51-4 in the 23rd over.

Should be able to watch a bit of this when I get home, before Mrs BB gets in from work.

Edit - Might have spoken too soon. Glamorgan now 57-7, Kaneria with 4-6 from 7 overs.
