The Essex CCC Thread

I'm going today, so I'm hopeful Essex will bowl Warwicks out for sod all, and make it a one innings game. :nope:

Clear and beautiful morning today. Kind of day that looks good for batting, which makes the decision to bat yesterday more strange, in addition to WArwickshires struggles with the bat, putting the squeeze on them yesterday would not have been too difficult.

Hopefully it is the pitch as much as the overhead conditions which contributed to our downfall yesterday, but otherwise it will be a massive wasted opportunity. Enjoy your day though Canvey, hope it is not too windy over there which it always seems to be!

I see on the Essex forum they're all blaming Garons for our performance. It's not the ground's fault we chose to bat on a bowler's day or that our batting line-up is woeful.

It's not the nicest ground, it's got nothing on Southchurch Park, but the poor darling members living in Chelmsford can come here just once a year and should stop moaning about it.

As for today, the weather doesn't look too good for us. We're buggered.

Hasnt Garons been this way since they moved there though! Im sure Alistair Cook even took a wicket or two on it one year! It's a shame they ever moved as Garons is pretty soulless (except on a sunday morning during the winter when the mighty SZC are at home!) but with them trying to build it up as some kind of local academy style venue I guess it is hear to stay. I was told by someone that if Chelmsford ever get planning permission then a number of games could be relocated to Garons.......

It's a horrible ground, but people complain because they have to do more than walk 5 minutes from their Chelmsford home once a year for an Essex home match. I really wish we stayed at Southchurch Park though, but it does look like it's here to stay. The pitch wasn't great when I played on it a few years back, and it's always cold and windy there.

However, other teams in the past haven't struggled batting on it, we just choose to bat first despite it always getting better as the game goes on and get skittled for nothing. Apparently the umpires yesterday said the pitch was fine.

Warwickshire really are clueless. Why are they batting their best batsman at 9?

This year Carter is their top run-scorer in the CC and has the highest average in their team by 11 runs.

Rikki Clarke is the only other player who averages more than 26.55 for them this year.

WArwickshire had a really good batting line up not so long ago...... Wheelie Bin hasn't exactly improved things then and I didnt realise their figures were so appalling.

9 down now with scores level! Mcgain gets his third wicket, and has knocked his bowling average down to below 35!

EDIT: All over, they are 5 ahead! Now lets dig in for today, smash some runs tomorrow and leave them chasing over 200-250!

They are basically a poor man's Essex from a year or two ago whenever Bops and Cookie were on international duty. That was when our 10th wicket partnership averaged more than our first.

Bell and Trott are a poor man's Bopara and Cook (and are absent)
Westwood is a poor man's Pettini, can't be dropped because he's captain
Maddy is a poor man's Gallian, a former England opener whose best days are very much behind him and retirement is around the corner
Ambrose is a poor man's Foster these days with the bat (and a bankrupt one with the gloves)
Carter is a poor man's RtD, a South African all-rounder (actually think he may be a poor man's Napier and Rikki Clarke the poor man's RtD)
Tahir is a poor man's Kaneria

etc etc

Essex bowled well enough, and the Warwicks batting line up is pretty poor. I can't understand why it's always so windy at Garons, it never seemed that way at Southchurch. There was a walkabout at Tean 78 by a group of SUFC players, it was a bit of a con as half of them we knew, Herd, Grant & Craford.

Essex close on 78 (73) / 6.

Two horrendous batting line-ups. It's too easy to blame the pitch for this - both sides need to have a look at themselves.

Especially Essex. Longest tail ever and no openers selected.

Looks as though Essex's stay in the top division is going to be as long as our recent stay in the Championship. Both of these sides seem as though they are going to have difficulty guarding their present status. On the bright side, Shrimpers don't look as they they will have to choose between cricket or football on Saturday afternoon.
