The Essex CCC Thread

You're not thinking of Mike Garnham are you? He always had a different coloured helmet (oo'err missus), he was a wicket keeper but batted down the order. I remember a game against Lancs where Essex where not many for 8 chasing about 270 and Garnham along with possibly Mark Ilott and definitely John Childs guided us to a most unlikely win. IIRC we played Glamorgan in the next round and Ilott had a huge spat with Robert Croft.

No it was later than that,.....I think that Glamorgan game happened much later and may be the game I was referring to....we needed a few to win with a couple of wickets left and it carried over to a second day??

EDIT: THis is the game I was thinking off.....T P Hodsgon - didnt bowl, batted at 9! Thanks for playing! http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/cricket-ilott-and-croft-tarnish-game-with-fracas-1245273.html

Mike Atherton opened the bowling?!

I remember this game well, i watched it at my girlfriends house as it was live on tv and we were dead and buried at 8 down needing 10 an over but somehow Garnham saw us home, Phil Defreitas opened the bowling but crocked himself so Atherton finished off .. this was in the day when the idea of packing your side with allrounders wasn't really common-place so Lancs were in a bit of a state, Athers gambled that they could strangle us so much that he could leave the last over to himself thinking we'd need too many to be able to win .. That last over arrived with 14 or 15 to win (almost unheard of back then) but IIRC Garnham cracked the first 2 balls for 4 and it was game on .. a couple of scrambled singles before Childs went up and over mid off for a 4 any batsmen would've been proud of to seal the win

we lost a wicket first thing the next morning but Peter Such came in and smnashed a 4 to win it .. we then beat either Leicester or Warwicks in the final IIRC

4 down! 9 in the match so far for Chambers.

Hmm... Notts bat deep down the order, though. Their 5th wicket pair is Ali Brown & Mark Wagh - a potentially destructive pair on their day. Still to come in are Chris Read, Paul Franks and Andre Adams - so still plenty of batting there - with the only genuine tail-end bunny being Charlie Shreck (even Luke Fletcher, their no. 10, has a first class ave of 22 and an HS of 92).

208 runs to get, 6 wickets in hand. Notts have the whip hand at the moment...

Incidentally, this game is Chambers's best first class performance to date. He's never had a 6-fer in an innings before, nor 10 wickets in a match.

I was planning to go today, but decided not to as I expected it to not finish today, and I can't go tomorrow, whilst I find parking far too frustrating. As much as I like the County Ground, I do wish they would move somewhere more accessible.

Well done Maurice! Hopefully he can get a 5fer in each innings now and finish them off. His career record is already really impressive (Average below 30 with the ball)....hopefully he can stay fit.

As for Garons......nice and near for me, but unless they build a big old stadium there its pretty soulless and a nightmare to get out of!
Would make the area a nice little area of sporting 'excellence' though, with SUFC new stadium, new swimming / diving pool and cricket. Bet those NIMBY's who objected to the football stadium would love it!

A superb result - a 10-fer for Maurice, and a 143 run victory against the league leaders. You'd have got long odds on that after we were bowled out for 154 in our first innings!

Perhaps the sign of things to come? Here's hoping.

Ravi is back for the next T20 game too - which is LIVE (for the 5th time?!) on Sky this Sunday and it kicks off around half 2! Lovely bit of cricket and then the WC finale. Lovely!
