The Essex CCC Thread

Shamefully i totally forgot we were playing today, but a text from cvanveyshrimper when we were 23-0 meant that at least i tuned in to the victory cruise

Big game today against Gloucestershire who sit bottom, a win could see us cement our place in the top 4, though I didn't realise we played everyone twice so a long way to go yet!!

A comfortable win against an awful Gloucestershire team, who have twice been bowled out for under 100 this competition. Once we'd reached 140, I was pretty confident that we'd stroll it. Good to see MtS in the runs for once.

Got so embroiled in the England match, and the inevitable lagers that followed that i shamefully forgot all about tonights match ... 184-4 versus 118 all out is just about as close to a rout as you can get in T20 so delighted with that result .. we have some tough matches now though, with a double header versus Hants and home games v the top two in Sorrey (where on earth did their sudden form come from) and Sussex .. we need 3 wins from those to maintain our challenge towards the top of the group

Anyone see any of this earlier? Pretty incredible win for our boys, Surrey posted an imposing 187-6 and we chased it down with a ball to spare thanks to an unbeaten 106 from Styris.

What makes it even more impressive is when you compare the 15 over positions:

Surrey - 152/2
Essex - 109/3

However we smacked 80 runs from the final 5 overs to take the win, Styris' second 50 coming from just 17 balls. What makes it even more impressive was that only 3 runs came from the 19th over but Styris then hit 22 from 5 balls in the last over to win it.

Puts us second in the table with a healthy NRR. Good to see someone can step into RtD's shoes.

Was working tonight so recorded it. Wow. Scott Styris take a bow.

Why on earth we promoted Phillips as pinch-hitter I'll never know. Every time he gets in in T20 he misses most balls and isnt a clean hitter at all - nearly cost us the game. Styris was unbelievable though. 106* off 50 balls. Brilliant.

Take that Surrey. Head to head: Played 11. Essex won 10.

Listening to Foster after the game he explained they promoted Phillips to maintain a left/right hander combination, partly to combat Schofield. It worked eventually.

I said in an earlier post that I was underwhelmed by the signing of Styris, how completely wrong I was an utterly stunning innings and destroying Symonds with 22 off 5 balls was amazing. Sussex live on Sky on Tuesday, and Essex will be minus Cook & Bopara, picked for the ludicrous Lions game. If as has been mooted that T20 is the big money spinner for the counties, then they shouldn't be further shorn of their best players.

Essex also set a record as thats the highest score chased down at the County ground in the 20/20! Superb performance and we are back on TV on Tuesday when we play table-topping Sussex. A win will virtually guarantee us a top 4 spot and we are obviosuly aiming to stay in the top 2 as those sides get a home draw in the 1/4's!

I'm guessing people will be more involved in another game today, but for the record ...

Hants 159 in 20 overs
Essex 164-1 in 17 overs (Bopara 94*)

Another stunning stunning victory for the lads and it really does put a massive question mark over Pettinis captaincy moving forwards, of course leading a side over 4 days is so so different to doing it over 40 overs but it will be interesting to see the Essex XI that take the field on Monday week for the championship visit of Notts, a 4 day game squeezed into the middle of the hectic T20 schedule as Foster has really got the boys firing these past couple of weeks

Yep, great stuff again.

The issue for me with Pettini is that he isn't good enough to hold down a place in the XI.

With Cook and Bopara off with the England Lions, RtD (and Napes) injured, I'm guessing we're going to need him as a batsman, so I think he'll play.

Why were Sky showing Essex 2nds?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to have followed Cook and Bopara and have shown the England Lions game? I'd have much rather have watched that game.

I watched the game tonight with SUFC Essex and we both realised from an early stage we had no strength in depth to win the game .. when Petts took his second catch i remarked that he'd need 60 with the bat to ensure we'd win, he did just that however with JM batting a full 7 overs for only 32 and Styris failing there was no-one left to do the job and we surrended fairly meekly in the end

We're going to Chelmsford on Friday night for the Pakistan game and to The Oval for the "away" game versus K*nt the following Friday so if anyone fancies meeting up for a pint and a chat then let me know
