The Essex CCC Thread

I think the Essex task in the County Championship has become harder as they will be without Kaneria for at least the first 2/3 weeks of the season. Also is Bopara back from the IPL? I realise he's in the England T20 squad, but he may as well be playing for Essex until the T20 World Cup starts.

On paper the Essex batting line up isn't bad and the addition of Godleman is IMO a good one. But the fast bowling department is bare. Masters is a good and dependable bowler, Kaneria aside that sadly is about it. I'd hope that one (or both) of Chambers & Westfield would step up but I have my doubts.

Essex will as ever be a dangerous one day side and a match for anyone, but I fear for them in the 4 day game. I think they'll finish bottom by a margin, and hope that won't impinge on their one day form.

To answer the question about Hampshire, they've signed Kabir Ali, plus they've also taken on Simon Jones, but with his record of injury he will be a doubt. You never know Pietersen might even play a match for them this season.

I think Durham will retain the Championship, they'll lose Collingwood & Onions to England, but I doubt if we'll see Harmison back in England colours and Davies is also a decent pace bowler, they've got spin with Blackwell and the promising Borthwick. Their batting is pretty strong and will be a match for anyone.

Durham will also have probably have Plunkett for the whole summer again, and he is more than useful against County Sides. That they have not signed an overseas player shows they have faith in their batting even though there are not many stars when Collingwood is out.

Kabir Ali is an excellent signing by Hampshire. He always impresses whenever Ive seen him bowl in all forms of the game and whilst he may have benefitted from an extra 5mph in speed, I think he should have been given more of a chance by England. He time has passed now but think he will do very well for Hampshire and is always a good player to pick in your fantasy cricket teams!

I hadn't realised Durham had not made an overseas signing, I thought Chanderpaul was going back. Still with Di Venuto & Benkenstein playing as Kolpak players they've go their overseas representation. Good call on Plunkett I'd forgotten him.

Anyone see Lloyd Scott and Ali Cook in the Metro this morning. Lloyd is a top guy I had the pleasure of batting with him a couple of times and playing cricket for a season at Billericay. He does all sorts of fundraising having raised millions for charity.

I have to say I fancy us for relegation straight back down to Div 2 this year! Oh well!

Is Lloyd Scott the bloke who did the London Marathon in a diving suit?

He sure is! Complete nutter. His body is shot to bits and he is doing the rounds on the clubs he plays for. He takes his kids to be trained by Terry Charrington instead of having them in an afternoon at school once or twice a week.

A genuine nice bloke. Top fella.

How useful are Hampshire?

Very.

Now's probably the best time to be playing them. Lumb is with Rajasthan Royals, Mascarenhas their captain is out injured, Mendis hasn't arrived yet, Capey is playing IPL (you're unlucky if you have to face Capey for Hampshire).

Unfortunately for Lumb read Bopara, for Mendis read Kaneria, for Capey read Cook.

:stunned::stunned::stunned:Collingwood is as quick as Davies! Good bowler at this level mind.

I think Bresnan might have moved above Onions in the England pecking order, although judging from the madness that is picking Sideshow for the 20:20s, maybe injury records don't count against bowlers any more.

Essex v Hampshire

Looks like the weather is set fair for the first day of the season. Hampshire have put Essex in after winning the toss.

Jusdging by the side Essex have picked they aren't expecting a bunsen. Godleman gets an early chance to impress, no Cook and I assume Bopara is still at the IPL.

Essex: Godleman, Maunders, Westley, Walker, Pettini (C), J Foster (W), ten Doeschate, Napier, Ch Wright, Masters, Chambers

Hampshire: Adams, Carberry, Dawson, McKenzie, Benham, Pothas (C/W), Ervine, K Ali, Tomlinson, Griffiths, Briggs

I think Godleman was a good signing as he was highly rated just a year or two ago and hopefully he can fulfill that promise. Otherwise, there doesn't look to be many batsmen capable of getting to 1000 runs this season.....

Whether in chelmsford is looking good for today and tomorrow, so would be good if we can be batting for over a day....

40/0 of 9.3.

If these two are not still there by tomorrow lunch time I will be disappointed.

bloody run out....that's slightly annoying.

The running hasn't seemed all that assured. Will be interesting to see what happens when Ravi comes back as he's quite keen on the quick singles. Maunders is a fat **** and Godleman's calling seems suspect.

You at the ground today then YB? How much is it to get in as I'd like to pop in during my lunch hours this season if it's not too much....

No, am listening to the commentary.

I think it's about £15. if you're interested in popping down for your lunch hour, membership would definitely be the way to go.

Godleman's 50 up.
