The Essex CCC Thread

Anyone heard anything about who our overseas players are going to be next season?

I heard something about an international batting all-rounder for 20:20 and a world class spinner for when Dani is with Pakistan. Anyone got any names?

It's Yuvraj we're after for 20:20s, which would be a fantastic signing.

It's Vettori we're after as our main overseas player, which I'm slightly less enthusiastic about as I don't see an orthodox spinger finner [(c) Mark Butcher] as a match winner in division 1. It's interesting to see how Tredwell's figures improved dramatically as soon as he dropped down into div 2.

The other Essex news is that Ravi was in the runs in the IPL with a 50 at a decent lick.

Yuvraj would be awesome; as for Vettori... I like him. As a cricketer, he has always struck me as a real leader on the field - and someone who can certainly help Pettini improve his craft.

That said, it's a fair point to worry about who will be taking our wickets next season...

points changes for this year.

Teams will now receive 16 points for a win and 3 for a draw (as opposed to 14 and 4 in recent years).

Bonus points remain unchanged (a maximum of 5 batting points and 3 bowling points available during each side’s first innings) but this threshold for achieving them has reduced to 110 overs (from 120 overs in 2009).

The use of the heavy roller will be banned after the commencement of the match.

Dukes cricket balls will once again be used in Division One with Tiflex balls used in Division Two and County v MCC University matches.

Vettori is quality and is definitely in my eyes an all rounder. He knows his craft and is a battle hardened Pro. He has great hair and a lovely pair of spectacles. Yes I said spectacles!

Do you mean a 2 innings rather than 2 day?

Haven't looked at what they are introducing in any detail yet, so not sure what exactly they proposing.

It's two-innings on one day: ECB website: two-innings format for Second XI

Basically, the team batting first has 20 overs then their innings stops, the team batting second has 20 overs, then the team batting first continues its innings with their remaining 20 overs starting where they left off, before the team batting second completes its 40 overs.

They'll also be trialling the pink ball with white clothing, as used in the recent MCC vs Champion County fixture in Abu Dhabi.

Essex host Kent in the Second Round of the knockout competition on May 31st at Billericay CC.

It looks like it was Yusuf Pathan we'd signed for 20:20 (I thought they'd said it was someone who'd played for a county before) but the BCCI have blocked it.

Shame, he's a destructive batsman who could have had great fun against county attacks.

Puzzlingly, the BCCI issued the No Objection Certificate for Pathan before withdrawing it 24 hours later, due to "a review of the Indian players' international workload during the course of the year."

Essex chief exec. David East has stated that the County will ask Yusuf to make a personal representation to the BCCI to allow him to play in the Twenty20 competition - hopefully the Indian Board will soften their stance to let him come over because, as you say, in the height of the English summer, judging by the standards he has set in the IPL, he could batter ordinary County attacks around the FCG.

Ravi is playing with his half-brother today (but has been dropped down the order).

Kick off tomorrow against Hampshire, this is Cricinfo's preview:

Essex

Championship: Division One; FP T20: South; Clydesdale Bank 40: Group B

Captain Mark Pettini, Coach Paul Grayson, Overseas Danish Kaneria (Pak)

Promoted on the final day of last season after Ryan ten Doeschate slammed a 59-ball 108 against Derbyshire, Essex's first challenge is to ensure they don't become a yo-yo team that goes straight back down. It will be a tough ask for a side that looks a little thin in a few areas - especially the bowling. With Ravi Bopara back in England favour they will also need to cover for his runs, although Alastair Cook will be available while the World Twenty20 is on. They need a big season from Tom Westley and regular contributions from the likes of James Foster, Graham Napier and ten Doeschate. The one-day route appears to be their best chance of success with the clutch of allrounders capable of winning Twenty20 matches.

Key man: Matt Walker - Needs to produce a consistent output in a line-up than is missing a big name if Cook and Bopara are absent. AM
Keep an eye on: Tom Westley - Time for him to kick on after showing glimpses of his potential
Winter surprise: Grant Flower was named Zimbabwe's batting coach, but will play this season before taking up his role.
Silverware? Championship survival will be a success, but don't be surprised to see them compete for 40 and 20-over trophies.

Any thoughts? Can see the Championship being a long hard slog and we'll do very well to stay up. How useful are Hampshire?

If we finish anywhere apart from bottom, I'll be really surprised. Ravi needs to get tons of runs, as I can't see anyone else getting more than 600 in the season...

I just can't see us taking 20 wickets very often. Am sure the mid-lower order will chip in with useful runs to get us some draws, and usually there is one of the more fancied sides who implode over internal issues (a la Surrey and Middlesex in recent years) so I would think we will come one from bottom.
