The Essex CCC Thread

When we needed 182, the radio said 37 overs were left.
So there must still be 26/27 left ??

106-0 now. 137 needed to win.

Middlesex 206-8 chasing 330 against Derbyshire, so looks like it's Derbys are going to win that one.

Glamorgan 260 in front with 4 wickets left, so their game could go either way.

Going to be a tight old finish to the season

Maunders has finally gone, with a criminally slow strike rate of just over 50. We've sent in MtS rather than one of our big hitters and unfortunately this looks to be heading for a draw.

Anyone know how many overs are left? Im about 500 yards from the ground and would pop over if there was still a bit of play left!

Hope you are there!

It's sounding like a thrilling finish. Napier has just hit a 6 to make it 22 needed off 17 balls.

4 off 7 needed. Napes and Westley hit 19 off the over before this. Great listening on BBC website.

EDIT: 3 off the last over needed.

Great result and great match, when we failed to get their lower order twice I never thought we could win and we seemed to be labouring too much in the chase but alls well that ends well!!

Sounds like it was almost as exciting as your game today Muse :D

Well done boys, cracking result given that the 1st day was washed out.

Great result for Essex up to second and in pole position for promotion. Considering the first day was lost to the weather, it was a positive declaration by Pettini that set up the win.

Derbyshire's failure to finish of Middlesex has given us a great chance. Derbyshire now have to win to have any chance of going up, so we should get either a) a result pitch or b) some reasonable declarations.

Also Glam / Gloucs drawing was handy result.

The forecast for the week ahead doesn't look bad at all. I would be very unhappy if Derby or Glamorgan got second spot having only won two games each thus far. I'd rather the runners up went to Gloucester or Northants, I think the ECB need to look at bonus points and points awarded for drawn games.

I'm wondering whether it is time for one up, one down.

Maybe you could have a play-off game that the second place second division team has to win against the second bottom first division team in order to go up.

What happens in the event of a drawn game then?

On another note from the Surrey fan here, I hope Essex do get promoted. Yes we'll miss the derby game with you but at least the likes of Cook and Bopara (more the latter) when able to play first class games for you, it will be against decent bowling attacks.

Genuinely think Bopara has what it takes to be a decent test match No.5 or 6 but needs to be taken out of the international arena for a while.

That division 2 team would have to beat the division 1 team under my proposal (ie they would stay where they were in the case of a draw). Would probably need to play it at the division 2 team's ground (to avoid the div 1 team preparing a road).

Agree that Ravi really needs first division cricket next year. Interestingly Cook has been thriving on division 1 bowling in one-day cricket, whilst struggling in the tests.

Surrey might be half decent (possibly even amazing) next year if they sign all the players linked with them. They have been dire this year. Mind you having the most talented squad in the division didn't do much for Middlesex.

The 'one up' idea works for me as frankly there's only one side that deserves to go up this year - whoever comes up as well is a pile of toss who will come bottom next year. However, I do genuinely mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say I wish Essex nothing but the worst in Derbyshire, and I hope you finish 5th.

Love,

J_S of The Championes x :)

As much as i hate K*nt i have to admit they have been a class apart in Div 2 this season, hopefully it will be they that are the pile of toss that finish bottom next year

As for Essex ?? Obviously i hope we do enough to get promoted though i fear we'll really struggle next year if we do manage to go up
