Right onto the next targets

What about getting Charley Kendall on loan from Lincoln? He is 21 and was 4th top scorer in NLS last season when on loan at Eastbourne. That surely ticks the boxes. If he is rubbish we can send him back

Rumours have begun to circulate on social media that at least a couple of National League clubs are interested in taking Kelly, who netted 17 goals in all competitions last season, off the Magpies hands.

The player still has a year to run on his contract and any club looking to prize him away this summer would have to stump up some cash.

One of the clubs thought to be interested in signing Kelly is Southend United, with the Southend Echo reporting that they were ‘pushing hard’ to sign a forward who netted ‘double figures for his club last season’.

Southend are keen to bolster their attacking options with Ryan Murphy and Harry Cardwell both set to miss the start of the season through injury.

However, Devonshire said this morning the striker wouldn't be joining the Shrimpers.

“I can't really say too much, but the Southend thing, I can tell you now is a no,” said Devonshire. “I'll probably say something more later in the week.

“We would need compensation because he's under contract, but that's all I can say at the moment.”

Kelly was one of the standout players for the Magpies last season, scoring 17 times in all competitions and shouldering the scoring burden in an often-challenging season. In recognition of his efforts, he claimed the golden boot, manager’s, and players' player of the season awards.

United claimed their fourth win of pre-season with an entertaining 4-3 victory over Potters Bar Town last night (Wednesday). Kelly wasn't part of a small Maidenhead squad that travelled to the Lantern Stadium; however, he did feature for the Magpies in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Brentford’s B team.

The Magpies twice came from behind in the first half at Potters Bar, with Shawn McCoulsky scoring both goals from the penalty spot.

The visitors fell behind once more before a 25-yard rocket from Charlee Adams drew them level in the 70th minute. Emile Acquah then grabbed the winner, dinking the ball over the keeper in the 88th minute to seal an entertaining win.

Reflecting on their latest run-out, Devonshire said: “The pitch wasn't the greatest, it was bumpy, and they were very physical. Again, there were some pluses and minuses. We didn't defend too well at corners, they played route one and we found that difficult at times. But we showed some character and ended up scoring a few goals as well.

“We've still got half the team out with niggles, and I'd like to think three or four of them will be back for Saturday (at Hungerford Town) and there's probably only one that might miss the first game of the season.

“There are things to work on, but our fitness levels seem ok, so I'm pleased with that, but we won't know until the season starts and we begin with a team in form (Notts County away on August 6) who are beating everyone at the moment, including Leicester City. They've been having some good results but there are no points at stake.

“Pre-season isn't about the results; it's about getting minutes into the legs of the players and getting ready for the start of the season.”
It's a cunning plan. Devonshire won't be happy until the whole of Southend has been turned into Spam.

I love how the reality of this situation is that Ron doesn't pay people and then there are 2 pages of people slagging off Devonshire. This one is on us folks. We have been run into the ground over the last few years in particular and our name is mud out there. Stan and co are working very hard to repair this but Rome wasn't built in a day. You reap what you sow. Let's hope success on the field starts to heal the wounds more quickly.

The fee for Kelly is/would be high and I personally think we can get better value elsewhere... Looking forward to some news soon on a trialist if the price is right.

Would have thought that if we were going to offer Wreh anything then we would need to do so fairly quickly. After all he needs a Club and may need to keep all options open.

All very true but this is Shrimperzone and I'm exercising my right to make Spammist comments even though logically they and their alumni have no interest in us whatsoever.

2 goals, 2 assists, a lot that watched him v Col U liked what they saw, Kev spoke well about last performance. Getting to grips with the way we play. I’d say sounds a very good option to have

That to me says Kelly’s favoured place to go is us….. but Maidenhead are basically saying your not going there…

Its so easy to take 2+2 and make 5. I took from Devonshire (Spammer)'s comments that probably we are considered out of the equation based on what we offering...surprise, NOT.
The statement might even be interpreted as make a sensible offer or no chance, oh you haven't..no chance. Remember he will want as much as possible hoping for some spending money.

That aside its in Josh Kelly's court. Maidenhead can accept offers but as has been said if Kelly doesn't want go it won't happen. If he does it will. If he really wanted to come here enough he and his agent could ramp up the pressure by saying we want to go with Southend, agree a fee- else I'll stay another year see out my contract and go on a free (in which case he might also command a signing on fee and maybe a better contract). Players forced to stay where they don't want to be, rarely ends well for the selling club.

But the motivation that makes players decide where they want to go is complicated and varied- geography, length of contract, salary, buy out clause, size of club, level of club, playing style, management team, family connections on and on.

Dan Mooney stated a big pull to go from Altrincham (similar size to Maidenhead) to Southend was he wants to play in front of 7,000 supporters, mentioned also our away support. Kelly might be happy to play in front of 1,500 or two men and a dog if the money's right..

FWIW I don't know if he even prefers to come here? Does anyone? but if he does i am suspecting that he probably won't deploy the hard ball tactics that would keep us in the game. I suspect its not happening (that said it has dragged on quite a while so probably not for want of trying whether just on our behalf or possibly his as well..)

You would expect there is a plan B (other than Wreh who I think we might sign anyway).

All conjecture and guesswork..
