Yup, think a lot of people have forgotten how many chances he needed before scoring or hitting the target. Used to spurn a lot.
This is true. But he got the chances to spurn even in famous Southend 0 formations and hence scored regularly. Not a small amount of it is getting into positions and space in and around the box, and following in on shots, taking a gamble. Instinctive goalscorers do this. As I said before Wreh does- 3 chances and one scored from opportunities in the box in 25 mins. Replacing someone who didn't have a shot in the previous 65 minutes.

I remember back to Goodship last days- zero shots and treated the penalty area as if it had an electric fence around it.

There are probably as many five yards forward passes made that should be sideways passes as sideways passes that should be five yard forward passes.

The emphasis needs to be more on better passing - first time passes, passes with more pace on and better movement to open up passes - than forward passing.

The award for how many times can you use passes in a post goes to .......

Interesting chat on passing, one thing I noticed on Saturday in particular was how many times a pass was available straight out to the wing backs but rather than go quicker and slightly longer with the pass straight out wide we would roll it through 1 or 2 extra shorter passes across the midfield.

Very frustrating afternoon in general but that was a particular bug bear of mine at the weekend as it might have been the fine margin that drags someone out of shape and opened up a slither of space through their ridiculously deep block that could have made all the difference

I agree. Sometimes a longer ball out wide would have meant we get the ball forward quicker, which would allow us to try and catch the opposition on the break. By not doing that we give the opposition plenty of time to get 10/11 men behind the ball.

Clearly we're not the finished article, and I like the way we play with patience. However, I would like to see us mix it up a bit. I'm sure that will come, but we're not there yet.

Agreed. This thread has run its course and served its purpose: prevent transfer rumour-related content from clogging up chit chat over the summer and crowding out other threads. If any new specific rumours pop up, they can have their own thread.
