Wanting more - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

KEVIN Maher is eager to ensure Southend United keep building this season.

The Shrimpers head into tomorrow’s clash with Halifax Town at Roots Hall having triumphed in their last three games.

And Maher is determined to keep the good run going.

“We’ve got to keep building, keep working and keep on adding points,” said Maher.

“The period where we’ve had the games it was important to come away with the points on the board and to progress in the cup which we did.

“But we have to keep it going because off the back of the results we’ve had recently it gives us an opportunity to start climbing up the league.

Blues have now been beaten just once in their last nine games.

But Maher is expecting another stern test against Halifax this weekend.

“We played Halifax not so long ago and Milly (Chris Millington) is someone I have massive, massive respect for for the job he’s done there,” said Maher.

“You can see how tight they are and how tough they are to play against.

“I watched them at Barnet and they played ever so well and they beat Aldershot as well.

“We’ve also had good games against them and we came out on the right side of the result last time out.

“At home we want to go and do that again now.

“But we know how well drilled and well coached they are.

“Halifax are in good form but I’m sure they’ll be saying the same about us.”

Halifax’s only defeat in their last eight league games came against the Shrimpers last month.

Surely an pitch inspection today to save Halifax travelling down guess the pitch will be the same tomorrow as this morning the ground staff must have a good idea

Ticket sales a good few hundred behind usual numbers at this time. Not helped by a tiny following of 6 (SIX) from Halifax.

6,710 (v Eastleigh) is our lowest Saturday (League) crowd this season.

Eastleigh is our lowest crowd so far this season, albeit on a Tues night at 6,359.

Is the post-xmas slump starting?...

Could be down to just 15 then if 2 still ill. Apparently sickness running through squad

Step up young Charlie Brown as GK, Mikey Faulkner and A N other under 21 for bum splinter treatment

The weather isn't going to help - I suspect the lower the predicted temperature, the lower the gate. [shoulder shrug]

could be a number of factors - skint after Xmas, too cold, maybe the dire boring football and lack of goals is starting to kick in and keeping people away?

Where's everyone getting these well below freezing weather reports from!? BBC says a short spell of -1°C tonight and before the match starts we're well into 3°C and sunshine. Not warm, by any stretch of the imagination, but not totally disastrous.
AccuWeather has -3 overnight in Prittlewell, getting above freezing around 11am. Of course none of the sites will have temp in the south penalty area in the shade etc, I think we'll need the ground staff to do their thing if the game has any chance of being on, but with the freezing temps last night and pretty low temps today (highs of 2 and below freezing again by early evening) as well, wouldn't surprise me to see it called off.

Bonne - 0 goals in 20 League games
Waldron - 0 goals in 7 League games
Kendall - 0 goals in 4 League Games (3 in 17 for Woking)

Walker injured so not available
Not great
Looking at Waldron and Kendall since he joined. How many minutes have they actually played? The stat lies to some degree.

If someone comes on for three minutes its a bit unfair to have a mark against their name for not scoring in that game.

Danny Waldron has played 248 minutes this season which equates to 35 minutes per game. Which I think is really unfair to be marked on this. Had to get up to the speed of things when you're a sub imo.

In the league since joining us Kendall has played four games. But only 170 minutes equating to 42.5 mins per game and already has an assist. He's learning a new gameplan so if we was to fire blanks then understandably.

Whilst Bonne has played 22 games he's played 1085 minutes but only equating to 49 minutes.

So looking at minutes played Waldron is more 0 in 2.3 games, Kendall 0 in 2 games and Bonne around 0 in 12.

Whilst Bonnes stats aren't great he was somewhat not fit let alone match fit for the majority of his first few games but was chucked into the deep end anyway because we didn't have anyone else. He has three assists.

Walker has played the most minutes per game on average this season at 57 minutes with 1042 from 18 games. Scoring two and assisting one. This is around 11.5 games

So the top level stats do lie somewhat. Not saying they've set the world alight but digging into the stats you get a better picture. Ultimately stats can say what ever you want them to say.

On a selfish level I hope it's cold enough in the morning to call my kid's football training off, that place is a nightmare in the freezing cold. Last time, before Christmas, I hid in the locker room lol. Feel free to warm up just after though 🤪 so maybe SUFC pitch inspection at 11:30 please!

Its all lies, mirrors and smoke ! Roughly 85% of fans have only seen these players at home to form an opinion. Roughly 10% on SZ will only have seen them on the telly !

This all true but in the spirit of social media if you are bashing people you want to be presenting in the most negative way as opposed to fair way.

And unless you can create your own opportunities out of nothing and finish a la Bim you are living off scraps….sadly…

With Crowther out, Walker maybe on his way back and 2 players recovering from illness, that could leave us with only 14 fit players for this game.

That's a great analysis.
Thanks for taking the time to work on it.
