Pre-Match Thread Southend United v FC Halifax Town. POSTPONED

Starting XI and Result

Can't see Halifax bringing many fans at all for this one.

They must have one of the most empty stadiums on a matchday, having a relatively big stadium by national league standards and low crowds.

We have to take the game by the scuff of the neck from the off and go all out to secure 3 points.
You have to remember that the bigger sport in their immediate area is Rugby League and the Panthers gates are regularly in the 1750-3000 range.

I’d like us to play 433 up with Bonne between Kendall and Waldron but expect the later 2 (certainly Waldron) won’t do 90 mins and so we will need one on the bench.

However a 4 at the back gives a problem as I don’t think Taylor works in a 2 and so it’s Gubbins and Golding and can’t see Taylor being dropped.

Therefore I’d go

Collin
Taylor Golding Gubbins
Gus Coker Miley Morton Ralph
Bonne Kendall (with Waldron for a decent spell)

4:43pm
Jack Wood's loan is nearly up with Torquay. He hasn't got many minutes there. Will he be staying for longer?

Maher: "It's something we've got to evaluate.

"Jack went out to get minutes but it hasn't happened.

"It's the level below but he's gone to a team who are high up in the league, I get that.

"I think Jack wanted to play and it's something we'll look at."

4:37pm
Could there be any new signings before Saturday's game?

Maher: "Possibly. I don't think we'll ever say no because we're working on stuff.

"It's not always the easiest thing to do, especially in the areas we're looking at.

"A lot of things have to go into it before we can make signings."

4:35pm
Asked about Adam Crowther's injury, Maher replied: "We've had the scan back and it's looking like it's longer than we hoped.

"It's something we're going to have to look at.

"He will have to have another scan a good number of weeks down the line."

4:34pm
On James Golding's loan, Maher says: "We're looking to extend that until the end of the season.

"We're just waiting for confirmation and the paper work to be done."

4:32pm
Kevin Maher on how Zach Jeacock could still return to Roots Hall

4:16pm
Asked about Zach Jeacock's future, Maher explains: "We got a call yesterday saying Lincoln have got an injury to a keeper.

"They've brought him back.

"His loan has expired which we were going to extend which actually works OK.

"We can have him back whereas if they had recalled him from a loan he wouldn't have been able to come back to us.

"They need him and it's their prerogative because he's their player.

"I hope Zach goes and plays and hopefully we'll revisit it next week and he'll be able to join us again."

4:10pm
Maher on the North Bank having Blues fans in again: "It's brilliant to have it open again. It was slightly different for the Southport game but for Ebbsfleet to have the numbers in we did was incredible.

"It's important the fans see that and can have that back which is nice for people who have known it there for many, many years.

"It's a good experience for the new fans too.

"Lets stick together because we have difficult periods throughout seasons.

"Last year the togetherness throughout the football club took us a long way and it's important not to forget that.

"We want to make Roots Hall a tough place for teams to come."

4:05pm
Kevin Maher explains George Moncur's departure

3:51pm
Asked about having his red card rescinded from the match with Yeovil, Maher replies: "You get a red card but you don't actually get a ban from it because it's the lowest form.

"But it adds to a number of yellow cards further down the line.

"We felt it was right thing to do because it was unjust.

"We're glad it's been proven that way and it puts it to bed.

"We had a red card in the game that shouldn't have been as well so that whole day was frustrating.

"It's put to bed now and we move on."

3:46pm
On drawing Sittingbourne in the FA Trophy, Maher says: "I'm hugely respectful towards every opponent but we've got enough games in the league to worry about at the moment.

"We'll do our DD on Sittingbourne, like we do with everyone we play.

"A home draw is important and we'll be ready when it comes along at the start of February."

3:40pm
More from Maher: "A day can be a long time in football. There has been a lot of change this week but you've got to roll with it. We have enough good players in the building to perform. We will get stronger once we add bodies as well. There's opportunities for other people and they've got to take it."

3:35pm
Blues boss to monitor illness in squad ahead of Saturday's clash

3:27pm
Asked about the illness Gus Scott-Morriss and James Golding have been suffering with, Maher replies: "There's still a bit going around and we haven't had them all training. It's something else we'll have to watch out for and there's a lot going around .

"It's right throughout the club, not just the football department.

"It needs monitoring."

3:23pm
Kevin Maher provides positive on forward's fitness

3:16pm
On Josh Walker's injury, Maher says: "He's OK. He's had his scan and it was OK. He will be close for the weekend. We'll get him some training and see where he is."

3:13pm
Maher: "We look at the stats on everything. We've got the most crosses in the league and we're right up there for touches in the opposition box too.

"It tells you we're doing a lot right but we're still loads to improve on.

"We want to be a bit braver in that final third but we want to win games and we've done that recently.

"We need to keep building and keep on trying to improve."

3:09pm
Maher on the striking positions: "It's an obvious we want to improve and we will be looking to but the people in the building have got to step up and take their opportunity too."

3:02pm
On the closeness of the league table and facing Halifax, Maher says: "You can see how tight it is but the games haven't quite evened out yet. Off the back of the results we've had recently it gives us an opportunity to start climbing up the league.

"We played Halifax not so long ago and Milly (Chris Millington) is someone I have massive, massive respect for for the job he's done there.

"You can see how tight they are and how tough they are to play against.

"I watched them at Barnet and they played ever so well and they beat Aldershot.

"We've also had good games against them and we came out on the right side of the result last time out.

"At home we want to go and do that again now.

"But we know how well drilled and well coached they are.

"Halifax are in good form but I'm sure they'll be saying the same about us."

2:56pm
On George Moncur's departure, Maher says: "With the position he's in with his contract at Orient and not having much time left on it he wants to go and play and I respect that.

"He's got the opportunity to do that but we thank him for his time and how he was around the place. We wish him the very best.

"For him personally and ourselves we would've liked more goals, more assists and end product in terms of numbers but he was brilliant around the place.

"I understood the situation and he's desperate to play for the next stage of his career.

"It worked for George that the opportunity to go to Ebbsfleet came up.

"But there are opportunities for others to step up now."

2:52pm
Are you looking to bring players in?

Maher: "Yes, without a doubt. You can see where we're short and it changes so quickly in football.

"We left three people out the squad only a few weeks ago and now we have five on the bench.

"It happens so quickly, probably more so at this football club than any other."

2:51pm
On keeping three clean sheets in a row, Maher adds: "When we don't score enough it's everyone's responsibility and clean sheets are the team's responsibility too.

"We've always been that way. It's pleasing to get that consistency with the clean sheets but there are areas we want to improve which goes without saying.

"We want to score more goals and there are changes in that area which is out of our hands. It's up to other people to step up."

2:47pm
Maher is asked about Blues' recent good run: "The period where we've had the games it's important to come away with the points on the board and to progress in the cup which is really important.

"We've got to keep building, keep working and keep on adding points."

2:44pm
WE'RE back at Boots & Laces ahead of Saturday's clash with Halifax Town. There's plenty to talk about so lets crack on, starting with boss Kevin Maher.

Form over the last 8 nearly the same. Both clubs home records worse than away .
Goals conceded both clubs doing very well.
Goals scored both clubs a bit meh.!

It's not shaping up to be free flowing high scoring match.

So will probably end up 3-3

I’d like us to play 433 up with Bonne between Kendall and Waldron but expect the later 2 (certainly Waldron) won’t do 90 mins and so we will need one on the bench.

However a 4 at the back gives a problem as I don’t think Taylor works in a 2 and so it’s Gubbins and Golding and can’t see Taylor being dropped.

Therefore I’d go

Collin
Taylor Golding Gubbins
Gus Coker Miley Morton Ralph
Bonne Kendall (with Waldron for a decent spell)
A decent spell being more than 3 minutes and less than? And subbed for which striker or as 3 up top to get an equaliser for a point.

Where's everyone getting these well below freezing weather reports from!? BBC says a short spell of -1°C tonight and before the match starts we're well into 3°C and sunshine. Not warm, by any stretch of the imagination, but not totally disastrous.

The important thing is to delay the pitch inspection. Met Office forecasts -2 degrees until 9 am tomorrow but rising to +3 degrees by 2pm.

This has and is always a problem. It depends on which weather site you go on. They can be roughly the same, but sometimes can vary regarding temperature, chance of rain, etc. So the minus1, minus 5 discrepancy doesn't sound a lot, but it is regarding the freezing of a pitch. Let's hope the minus 1 is correct.

Just hope it is not a 12 noon inspection. Not fair on travelling fans.
The game isn’t until 3- remember the buffoon we had doing a pitch inspection early, refused a later inspection and we had the spectacle of the team doing a full training session at 3pm on the area of pitch in question that was by all accounts entirely playable.

The idea is to give the game the every chance to be on. I travel a way and will set of at 12.30 knowing full well I could get to the Dartford Tunnel and it be called off. That football this time of year.

Halifax fans will leave knowing there is a chance it will be called off. They aren’t fools they know this and choose to travel as do I? I actually think calling it of at 10.00 only for the pitch to be perfectly playable at 3 is a far worse outcome?

I may be in the minority…I often am…
