Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

What a game! We 100% deserved to win - look at the stats (except the goals bit) - more corners, more shots, more shots on target, more possession. They struggled to deal with this - it felt like they were using underdog tactics. Pepple was constantly getting his shirt pulled, his ankles kicked and more. They were time wasting and doing ugly niggles all over the filed. Our finishing was pretty poor - that's one of the big differences between the leagues. The last goal - it was not just Collin's fault at all - his actions were a bit rush, but Gus' header was tired and wayward and caused chaos. Crowther was great today but he had two tired moments that could have led to goals. It somehow seems if we're tight at the back, it's at the expense of chance creation!

Collin 6.5 Did well overall, but wasn't tested much. Distribution pretty good. Positioning good
Crowther 7.5 - Couple of horrible bloopers, but generally super solid and great positioning
Ralph 7.5 - won a lot of headers, distributed well, dependable
Taylor 8.5 MOM - so calm, tidied up loads at the back, started loads of good stuff going forward
GSM 7 Lively as ever - , but not at his incisive best
Morton 8 Best I've seen of him. Was always one step ahead of the opposition and great link up play
Bridge 7.5 Lively and they were scared of him, but takes so long to cross sometimes
Husin 7 - linked up well, better distribution
Coker 8 - always a willing runner, great energy, good link up
Bonne 6 - Started anonymously - blocked something in a wall, but that was all I remember first half. Did improve, but so languid.
Pepple 8 - handful throughout, great engine, unlucky not to score

Subs
Waldron 6.5 needs match sharpness but great to have him back
Appiah 6.5 - lively runs but lost out a couple of times
Miley 7 assured but not greatly creative
Walker 7.5 created the 3rd
Moncur 7.5 powerful and creative

Pepple is not match fit!
He was clearly “blowing out his ar*e” after 60 minutes something the coaches are working on, remember he never had a full pre season.
But he ran and ran for 60 minutes, whilst in a wrestling match with the big defenders. I’d be surprised if he didn’t run more in those 60 odd minutes than bonne did in the 90 of normal time. That’s why he was blowing and bonne wasn’t.

Well I agree with the generally shared sentiment that we were excellent today. More direct and positive. If we play like that each week the playoffs are nailed on.

Bim was excellent and we will have to accept that at the end of the season he will be off to somewhere higher up.

However I disagree with many on here. I thought Bonne was great today and on many occasions heard those around me calling out an excellent header etc. I thought Harry Taylor was unusually poor. The 4th goal was his fault, he should have been sent off when he stumbled and grabbed the ball on the edge of the box and he almost repeated the stumble under pressure a few minutes later. Good player but bad day at the office.

We also really need to sign a CB either on loan or secure a target. With Gubbins being injured we had no option on the bench if one of the three had to go off.

Today highlighted how small a difference there is between tier 3, 4 & 5 of the football pyramid.

What a fantastic spectacle, I am very proud tonight of every player wearing our badge this afternoon 💙

Really?

I felt that when Charlton got the ball down, which they did at times, they cut us open with ease. They reminded me a bit of the Paul Sturrock era. They went long, and then played their football in the our half, as opposed to how we try and play out from the back.

They were a lot bigger, stronger, faster and more physical than us. Just look at the set pieces, it looked like men against boys when we were marking and it was no surprise they scored from a cross, a set piece, and two long balls we didn’t deal with properly. They were more clinical than us.

Look at their set piece delivery, and general delivery from open play. Superb crosses for the first two goals. I remember in the first half Coker, Scott-Morriss & Husin all wasting golden opportunities on the right hand side to put good crosses in. Gus never beat the first hand, Coker’s was floated which the keeper took with ease, and Noor’s cross was behind everyone.

We were excellent, don’t get me wrong. We tried to play football the right way, and we served us some super stuff at times and was a joy to watch. That was a proper cup tie, and it’s a crying shame that replays have been scraped as we’d be looking forward to a trip to the Valley.

Personally, and I think we’d have lost on penalties, but if you are scrapping replays, why not scrap extra time too? It’s such an anti-climax, and although we obviously did concede, how many goals are actually scored in extra time? We were dead on our feet at the end, and I’m glad we’ve got a week off before Yeovil on Saturday.

And that's why he was subbed. He was deffo starting to tire.

Fwiw, even though he only played half the game he was my man of the match.

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has already been covered, but why has someone got to be blamed for everything? There is a point where the opposition do something that is actually better than the best efforts of everyone to defend... that's no-ones fault, it just means they are better.

I'm talking about the first two goals here... great delivery for both, absolutely no criticism at all of Ralph for the first as the ball was well over him and it was a perfect header. It was also a great free kick for the second, pinpoint precision delivery and a late run into the box by the goalscorer. It was a great set piece, not a poorly defended one IMO.

For most of the game, Ralph outjumped Leaburn, who is a good 6 inches taller. Phenomenal effort. Taylor tidied up well but made 2 errors, one which they should have capitalised on just before half time and which would have made it 3-0, an extremely unfair scoreline at that point, and the tired header for their winner. That was absolutely NOT Collin's fault. If Taylor leaves it, Collin is on the way out to claim it and the danger is over. But I'm not going to criticise any of them, no-one played badly, they should be absolutely proud after that performance against a L1 team.

It was a proper FA Cup tie and so good to see a proper crowd at the Hall again. All the bars on the East side were full with queues a good 50 mins before kick off and that is great to see (even if it meant I couldn't get in!). I'd love to hear a report from COSU on the match day takings from the bars and kiosks. I was trying to remember the last decent cup match we had at the Hall... probably the Chelsea replay in 2009. When I was growing up, we had a great FA Cup record, never got beat by non-league teams and usually made round 3. Oh for even a little of that again please... yesterday was a taster.

Well done lads. Fabulous effort.

Mostly agree - I'd also add that things are rarely a single person's fault - it's a team game. Someone gets beat for a header, but what about allowing a player to cross or how did the oppo gain possession in the first place. It's all too simple to blame the last player involved (often keeper or defender) but that ignores the team element or as you say ignores acknowledging what the opposition did.

Best game at the Hall for many years, Bim was excellent .

Charlton didn’t look a great side and played a lot of long balls.

Leaburn looks more of a threat than his Dad ever was.

Unfortunately our subs certainly weakened us. Plus side Danny got 35 mins in the tank.

Bridge looked destroyed at the end, hopefully just exhausted- he was excellent with the extra space The Addicts gave him. His best game this season.

Husins best (home) game this season.

Collin - seems to be the latest target, I don’t think he could have done much more for the 4th goal. His kicking was better today. Hopefully the new coach can work with him - he is still so young.

Like most on here very disappointed with the final result but really proud of them today. Hats off to Kev for a decent game plan.

Right need a stiff drink now, let’s smash Yeovil on Saturday!
Interesting what you say about Charlton because when they played the ball out from the back they pulled us everywhere, and were threatening our goal in about 5 passes.

As for Husin. I quite like him, but others think he's the weak link at the moment. What makes you say it was his best home game?

Simple really, Charlton looked very comfortable in the first half and were happy to let us play and have shots from distance, we didn’t trouble them.

They scored two easy goals and should have gone 3-0. We get back into game with the penalty and then started 2nd half so good and looked dangerous but after Some subs the game calmed down.

Sloppy goal to concede at the end

Not even going to get into the finer details of the sloppy goals and whose fault it was etc. End of the day we’ve taken a pretty much full strength Charlton side to the brink of penalties. That was the very least we deserved as well. We more than matched them. They gave it everything and we can ask no more. One of the most enjoyable games I’ve been at in many a year. W block was scenes!

On the whole what a performance from the boys. Thought Pepple was unplayable up top and was a shame he couldn’t last the whole game. We dominated most of that game and it’s just heartbreaking the way we lost it , something that was easily avoidable . Nothing but proud tho. Time to tackle the league at full speed now we have a near enough full squad . 2/3 extra additions around January time as well and we can still make a good go at this season

Micky G who is usually on the microphone was booked in to host the Rayliegh Fireworks event.

DJ 'Jazzy' stepped in yesterday for music duties and took over the mic control once Micky G had to leave.

Subs were not announced potentially because the music room is in the South Easr corner and it's really hard to see the 4th official board when it's being held up due to the angle. He tried his best but couldn't be sure of accuracy.
