Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

East reds. Doubt it's the same unless your knocking 100 and these kids have aged enough to collect their winter fuel payments. Their resemblance to Waldorf ans Statler is remarkable.

It's always just loud enough to be heard by a 5 seats radius from them but never loud enough to be heard by the players.
There's no harm in surrounding fans telling them to shut the **** up!

What an incredible match! For a neutral, I should imagine it would have been very entertaining. For a Southend fan, it was heart-breaking. Super proud of our lads though, they put their hearts and souls into it.

How lovely was it to see a proper, open game of football instead of the cloggers we so often get in opposition that stifle our creativity. This allowed the likes of Jack Bridge and Noor Husin to flourish and show their skills in a way that's been often absent this season. Jack was my MOTM, he was a joy to watch, and I hope he wasn't in too poor a way afterwards as he was hobbling for far too long - we thought there was an extra sub once it went to extra time, so were surprised Wind wasn't brought on for him. Probably the biggest game James Morton and Oli Coker had ever played in and I thought both did everso well. Coker is really growing in stature and confidence.

I thought the defence were immense too, both the central three and the wing backs, but each of those central defenders made costly mistakes, some very costly. Think Ralph was on or certainly near to the scorer of both the first two goals, and Taylor, well, the slip which could have resulted in a red card and goal conceded and then that odd header at the end. Crowther probably the best of the three of them overall, looked assured and confident, a shame he couldn't do better with that chance in the first half.

Again, I thought Bonne and Pepple worked hard and well together. People need to get off Bonne's back because there is a skilful and intelligent player there. Reminds me a lot of Marc-Antoine Fortune in his style, and like MAF, the goals will come. Pepple still working up to full match fitness, so understood the substitution.

If you watch @D1versity 's vlog, you can clearly see the mistakes in the defence, and I won't criticise Collin for the devastating 4th goal. I thought Collin had a decent game on the whole, his kicking was much better than it had been recently and his handling was good. I was disappointed in the attitude of his team mates and the management at the end, as I never saw anyone go to console him, and he was at the back, rather isolated on the walk round. We are going to have another Ted Smith situation on our hands, if someone doesn't do something about it.

I couldn't believe some of the stuff the ref allowed to pass unpunished (Taylor's handball included), Pepple was continuously being grappled with and I felt this was allowed to go too far.

Felt Charlton probably hadn't done too much research on us and came to the match a bit complacently. I think we gave them a bit of a fright.

Collin - 7
Gus - 7.5
Taylor -7
Crowther - 8
Ralph - 7.5
Bridge - 8.5
Husin - 8
Morton - 7.5
Coker - 7.5
Bonne - 7.5
Pepple - 7.5

Subs:
Miley for Morton - 7, came on when we needed to shore things up a bit, excellent cross in for Walker's shot
Walker for Pepple - 7, thought Pepple was still ok at this stage, but Josh came on and caused some problems
Moncur for Coker - 7, fresh legs when Oli was tiring, showed composure
Waldron for Bonne - n/a, good to see Danny get some time, looked strong and plenty of running in him
Appiah-Forson for Husin - n/a, strange one this, with the other changes and to try and win, I'd have preferred Wood at this time

Explains the lack of reaction from the Charlton fans. Shame because some good tunes bring dished out recently on the speakers. Never thought I'd hear a Linkin Park song st the football. Long may that continue.
One of the requested songs, from one of my older JB members!

Really?

I felt that when Charlton got the ball down, which they did at times, they cut us open with ease. They reminded me a bit of the Paul Sturrock era. They went long, and then played their football in the our half, as opposed to how we try and play out from the back.

They were a lot bigger, stronger, faster and more physical than us. Just look at the set pieces, it looked like men against boys when we were marking and it was no surprise they scored from a cross, a set piece, and two long balls we didn’t deal with properly. They were more clinical than us.

Look at their set piece delivery, and general delivery from open play. Superb crosses for the first two goals. I remember in the first half Coker, Scott-Morriss & Husin all wasting golden opportunities on the right hand side to put good crosses in. Gus never beat the first hand, Coker’s was floated which the keeper took with ease, and Noor’s cross was behind everyone.

We were excellent, don’t get me wrong. We tried to play football the right way, and we served us some super stuff at times and was a joy to watch. That was a proper cup tie, and it’s a crying shame that replays have been scraped as we’d be looking forward to a trip to the Valley.

Personally, and I think we’d have lost on penalties, but if you are scrapping replays, why not scrap extra time too? It’s such an anti-climax, and although we obviously did concede, how many goals are actually scored in extra time? We were dead on our feet at the end, and I’m glad we’ve got a week off before Yeovil on Saturday.
Yes really! I am very proud and thought we matched them in every area 💙

We played well, no mistake about that, and were more than a match for them.

However, at times, the difference between the two teams was really obvious. I know we are all bias towards our own team, and rightly so, but Charlton certainly had greater quality than us, but we had bigger hearts.

Quick word on Charlton fans, there’s a reason they’re known in certain circles as trainspotters and anoraks. Odd bunch.
Ah! you see the problem is with them, most are from the heritage of those that didn’t decided to follow the Woolwich Arsenal to North London. They suffer from an genetic emotional scarring from birth because of that fact and it manifests itself as personality deficiencies as they grow older 😉 Well that and having Millwall as your neighbours doesn't help of course 😀

Like so many on here I thought for large periods we were the better team and the game could have gone either way so I am sticking to my opinion that the level of football between tiers 3, 4 and 5 of the football pyramid is minimal. I am usually one of the first on here to criticise if we play badly but yesterday we were immense and Charlton had to be at their best to grind out the win.

What a fantastic match it was 💙

At one point in the second half he was physically thrown to the floor in the Charlton penalty area, with no come back.

Charlton clearly studied their ****housery from the Borehamwood Handbook.

True. but they can put out a squad that can play at that intensity every weekend and midweek.
our boys wont be able to move till Wednesday.

I feel yesterday was another step made on the comeback road of Southend United Football Club.
On the pitch our boys went toe to toe with League One opposition, coming up against arguably technically better players and left us with pride as we took them all the way. Yes there was mistakes both individually and collectively but if we didn't have that in our current DNA the players and Club would be facing the likes of Charlton week in week out, highlighting these deficiencies is only stating the obvious, it's work in progress, just like Roots Hall, as a fully open North Bank testified, can't wait to hear our fans using the unique acoustics that the traditional home end offers.
Yesterday was a day to hold heads high Shrimpers!

Prior to yesterday's game I was wondering how we would fair against a league 1 side and worried we would not be competitive and interested to see the comparisons between the two sides. After going two goals down I like others feared the worse. But was I wrong we were competitive showed determination and gave their all and as a fan that's all you want to see from your team.Yes Charlton exposed our defense weaknesses in not dealing with Leaburn but that's football.
As fans it was a fantastic display to watch and be part of and gives us great hope for the future in our efforts to return to the EFL.

A massive effort by all to take this tie to the wire. Ultimately a weak gk performance and lack of height on the back line cost us. We were bullied by Leabirn and the superior physicality they had up top. Really Charlton did not have to work hard for their goals and were avoidable. We were never opened up on the floor and you just feared every time a ball was launched into our box in the air. A real shame as we deserved more for our efforts.

Andeng-Ndi 5
Taylor 6
Crowther 6
Ralph 6
GSM 6.5
Coker 7
Morton 7.5
Husin 7
Bridge 8.5 MOTM
Bonne 7
People 8

Walker 6
Miley 6.5
Moncur 6
KAF 5.5
Waldron 6

Jack Bridge was immense and gets my MOTM over Bim Pepple for a full 120+ minutes of endeavour. Even when clearly carrying a knock he stayed on in the second half of extra time to be a penalty taker. Bim had a great 60+ minutes being really our only player to outmuscle theirs in duels. Proud to be a Shrimper yesterday and to see the stands so full, a reminder of not so long ago when we were last in League One. We can compete, the tough part is trying to get out of the National League. UTB.
