Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

OK. Colin made a crucial mistake at the end.
What happened to team spirit?
Not one player or staff went to console him.
think he took quite a verbal bashing afterwards. But, will be a good learning experience. Certainly seemed nervous throughout.
Interesting to be reminded of what a tall solid spine in the team does. Their 4 and 11 were very good at physically marshalling our players. the rest were noticeably sharper and fitter than us in the extra time.
their 4 or 5 attempts on goal resulting in 4 goals shows the difference in quality but I thought we played really well and all players should be proud but obviously gutted.
Bit confused why pepple was taken off so early as he was causing them so many problems. Their no4s octopus tactics could easily have ended in a red eventually.
Great day and the atmosphere seemed good everywhere.
Thought Ralph was immense today winning headers against their 9ft 5 bloke

Still feeling pretty gutted we didn’t progress this afternoon, but immensely proud of the way we went toe-to-toe with a team two divisions above us.

That pride is magnified when you consider we were two goals down in the first half and went behind again after Coker’s deflected finish had drawn us level. Another deflection - this one more sizeable - took the tie to extra time, so it proves if you can back yourself in and around the penalty area, it pays dividends.

Both teams will look back ruefully about the goals that were conceded, but there was some quality involved as well. Leaburn’s header for the opener was postage-stamp stuff off the back of a quickly-delivered cross, although I think Scott-Morriss could’ve been out faster to close the ball down and the scorer was unmarked.

Charlton’s second was another excellent delivery and a fine header from Mitchell, who had got himself into a pocket of space. There are plenty of occasions in the National League when Collin has been able to make a save from a close-range header in similar circumstances, but the quality and power of this header was too much for him on this occasion.

At that stage, I was thinking Crowther’s snatched finish over was going to prove costly. We had dominated open play and were playing on the front foot, but the difference was the way the visitors were clinical with their finishing.

Collin did enough to distract Godden, who smashed the crossbar off the back of a Taylor slip, and we grabbed a lifeline after quick feet from Coker got him space in the penalty area and his cross was clearly handled. Bridge converted and we were right back in it.

The start of the second half was superb, capped by Coker’s equaliser from Bonne’s superb header. Bonne had already sent a shot inches past the post, and Mannion made an outstanding save after a brilliant cross from Husin, who put in his best performance of the season.

Godden’s goal was a blow, and I felt we struggled after that, but the players dug deep and stayed in touch, which enabled Walker’s shot, diverted in off defender Edwards, to bring us level in stoppage time.

Extra time was cagey in comparison to the ninety minutes before it, and both teams struggled with their fitness. Bridge was particularly incapacitated, whilst Waldron was still feeling his way back as he made his return from injury, but the last few minutes saw us have a couple of set-piece chances before the killer goal at the other end.

I don’t apportion blame to Collin for the goal, but equally I expect we’ll see Jeacock between the sticks next week. You could see the confidence drain out of Collin, and I think he’ll be taken out the firing line for a while. Worth remembering, though, that a huge reason we had this match in the first place was his outstanding one-on-one save in the first half at Eastleigh.

This was a bit of a free hit in that we weren’t expected to win, even off the back of our recent good form. Yeovil will be a completely different proposition; we’ll be expected to win, and I don’t expect tactically we’ll have the space to exploit that we did today as Charlton were more of an attacking force than most teams at Roots Hall in the National League.

There were fine performances all over the pitch this afternoon. Pepple was a real tormentor for the Charlton defence; Bonne worked hard and got into good positions again - his goal is getting closer; Bridge was much more threatening than he has been recently; Husin and Coker were excellent in their attacking midfield roles; the back three were good even if they had a small number of lapses punished against quality opposition.

It would be brilliant to have a Second Round tie to look forward to, and it would’ve been deserved. This performance shouldn’t dent the confidence that has been cultivated in recent weeks, it should enhance it. We have some tough games against teams around and just above us for the rest of the month, but it’s really exciting now to anticipate what we might be capable of in those games.

Best game at the Hall for many years, Bim was excellent .

Charlton didn’t look a great side and played a lot of long balls.

Leaburn looks more of a threat than his Dad ever was.

Unfortunately our subs certainly weakened us. Plus side Danny got 35 mins in the tank.

Bridge looked destroyed at the end, hopefully just exhausted- he was excellent with the extra space The Addicts gave him. His best game this season.

Husins best (home) game this season.

Collin - seems to be the latest target, I don’t think he could have done much more for the 4th goal. His kicking was better today. Hopefully the new coach can work with him - he is still so young.

Like most on here very disappointed with the final result but really proud of them today. Hats off to Kev for a decent game plan.

Right need a stiff drink now, let’s smash Yeovil on Saturday!

Unfortunately missed this game so someone else got to enjoy it from my seat…. My loss their gain….!

Seems this wasn’t a try and nick a 1-0 lead against the run of play and packed defence type performance, where the L1 side had 70% possession. It wasn’t long ball and hope to score from a corner. It was two sides playing decent football and by all accounts on the day we’re very closely matched. Stats say had the better of it?

That is the biggest compliment to the players whose confidence should grow significantly as a result. We are clearly doing something right…now onwards and upwards
Charlton played a lot more route one than we did. Their players looked big and strong but at times you’d not have known which team was two divisions higher. We didn’t seem overawed at all for most of the game.

I have to say I feel positive after that, we fought so hard and deserved something from the game. It’s a shame that a tired error in judgment has cost us.

Collin, aside from the fourth looked solid and his kicking was much better. However we really need to address that such an important position is seemingly such a weak link.

All the lads today can hold their heads up and be proud.. we matched and often outplayed Charlton. Even losing, it was such a good game of football.

And what a sight to see the ground rocking (on all 4 sides). Roots Hall was s*xy and glorious.

I also hope a lot of chumps (myself included) are eating their words as Pepple is quality.

I wanted to see the highlights before commenting as it was a very quick game, end to end stuff plus a few deflections and odd movements.
(1 & 2) And having seen the goals again, the first two were a combination of very good delivery, good heading and a touch of defensive uncertainty on who/what/where to take their man.
(3)100% penalty, coolly despatched.
(4)Oli's goal was massive deflection but all came from good header back/assist from Bonne.
(5)Charlton's third was maybe tired legs and poor luck?
(6)Our 3rd, an OG but the boys were knocking and put the pressure on.
The winner, more Harry T's mis-header than any Collin mistake, blaming anyone is a cheap shot imo.

Great atmosphere, really enjoyable.

Great game. Gutted at the result but the performance was excellent and the boys did themselves proud. Shame TV viewers didn't get to share the excitement. Bim was excellent and my MOTM. Strong, fast and made the defenders on him work bloody hard to contain him. Shame Charlton cottoned on that the ref didn't consider two arms wrapped round a player was a foul. Well done all. COYB!!
