Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Mostly agree - I'd also add that things are rarely a single person's fault - it's a team game. Someone gets beat for a header, but what about allowing a player to cross or how did the oppo gain possession in the first place. It's all too simple to blame the last player involved (often keeper or defender) but that ignores the team element or as you say ignores acknowledging what the opposition did.
I'll add as well this happens at the other end of the pitch - how many people have actually acknowledged Collins and Bonne involvement in Cokers goal?

I'm guilty of it as well - I said Bim was MOTM but did anything he do actually lead to a goal?

An interesting couple of comments from the Charlton board. Most of them were denying that is was a penalty. The second comment below qualifies for most ill informed nob of the season award!

We made hard work of that. Watching it, it was like we were the National League team and they were league one. They moved it around pretty nicely but we, in general, could barely string 2 or 3 passes together unless it was across the back. We were lucky that their defence was pretty weak Otherwise we would have lost that for sure. We weren’t good for large periods of that game. That’s a worry. We just seem to lack any flair.

Our midfield is non f*******g existent more like!

Bullied about again by a bunch of part timers this time.
And when you look to the bench it's much of the same.
How did Jones get this paramount part of the jigsaw so wrong??

Yesterday, we were excellent. We showed everything good about us as a team, and us as a club.

At no stage did we give up, and get swallowed up by the occasion. Just like at the end of the RM regime, we could have been forgiven for going under, but the turning point was obviously them hitting the bar and us getting a penalty within a minute.

The attitude, desire and sheers guts we gave speaks volumes of this group of players as men. I was critical earlier of Crowther, and a few others have come under “scrutiny” my others in this thread, but whilst we do lack some quality in the final third, we make up for it with our us against them mentality.

Don’t get me wrong, Taylor slips and if the handball is given and he is sent off, or they score their two chances the game is over, make no mistake about that, but none of those things happened and Coker wins a spot kick that Bridge stuck away expertly.

From then on, there was only one team scoring next. Again, I think if Charlton go 1-3 up, it’s game over, but Coker scores a deflected effort from an excellent Bonne knock down and our tails are well and truly up.

As I stated before, I get Charlton really showed they were the league team with their quality on the ball, when they got it down. Whilst I don’t think there is much difference between the top of the National League and the majority of League Two, the jump to League One is huge, and Charlton demonstrated that.

I actually felt we became weaker with the substitutions. Walker didn’t offer us what Pepple did, but obviously his deflected strike got us a deserved equaliser. We should all be looking forward to a trip to the Valley, and a replay with more money coming into the coffers, however the powers that be deemed replays a waste of time for the big boys with the every growing schedule, that massively effects those at Charlton and Southend United….

Walkers deflected effort got us a richly deserved equaliser, and no less then we deserved. We deserved a draw worse ways, we certainly didn’t deserve to lose in the manner we did.

I said it before, but extra time is a complete waste. We were dead on our feet, and Charlton exposed that at the end. If we had a game on Tuesday, I’d be backing the other team, however we get a full week to rest and recover ahead of Yeovil.

I won’t go into blaming people for mistakes again. I’m incredibly proud of the lads and the effort they put in. Yesterday felt like a proper match. A proper away following, although quiet, a proper home following which was excellent in noise levels. Two good teams going for it.

We need more days and nights like this at Roots Hall. Was great to see the old girl packed and rocking. A shame I was sat between a Liverpool fan, and I’d bet two Charlton fans the other side of me, but it is what it is.

Another word on the referee, who I felt was excellent. Yes, lots of grappling at times, but if you give it every time, you have a free kick at every throw in, set piece, ball forward etc. he got the big decisions right, and let a proper cup tie develop. Arguably should have sent Taylor off, but that ruins the game. He did his best to let it flow.

Lots of really positive performances. Husin was good, Bridge too, Pepple was outstanding, Morton is turning some of the fans who weren’t sure of him around. Good to see minutes in the legs of Miley and Waldron too, plus Moncur making a cameo after an injury lay off.

A really positive day. However, we simply have to back this up in the league. No point raising our game for the visit of a big League One side, to drop off a cliff with our next performance in the league. We need to carry on our run in the league and start to climb this league.

I agree. I thought he did well. As you say, a lot of grappling by their defenders, but we can see those if we're watching side on. Many of those were done on the blind side off the ref. He picked up on those more in the 2nd period. I'm wondering whether the assistants mentioned anything at half time ?

Can’t have been from the assistant in front of the East, he couldn’t have spotted his fingers on his hands, he was woeful.

Equally, our defenders were all arms around the Charlton players too. Was a two way street with the grappling. I didn’t feel like he showed bias to either side.

I’m not convinced many National League refs would have given us that penalty in front of a packed away end.

Rome wasn't built in a day (and Roots Hall wasn't fixed over night either).

There is an issue with sound in the North Bank at the moment but it is on the priority list 👌
Explains the lack of reaction from the Charlton fans. Shame because some good tunes being dished out recently on the speakers. Never thought I'd hear a Linkin Park song at the football. Long may that continue.

A very enjoyable, entertaining game and the players did themselves and us proud. All we could ask was that they give a good account of themselves and they did that and more. Pepple has speed, strength and tenacity. I am indeed warming to him. The rest of the team were also exemplary and deserve a well earned rest before they kick on again training for another tough league game v Yeovil.

We seemed to move the ball about quicker and it suits us. More of the same please.

A particular note about Collin. I rate him highly or, at least, I rate his potential highly. I am perhaps a little concerned about what is going on between his ears. I noticed yesterday, when he defended the south bank goal, if he turned to pick up the ball or his water, a good number of fans applauded him encouragingly. He did not gesture, wave, smile or even make eye contact. It could be he was concentrating intensely but he really did not look comfortable or happy. He indeed looked as though he were intentionally avoiding eye contact. I know he has taken some stick, at the ground and reportedly on social media, and I hope it isn't tarnishing his relationship with the majority of fans that appreciate him.

Apart from that what can I say? ' Up The Blues' of course.

Usual pair in front of me bring sarcastic at everything Collin did and he got the blame for every goal. The below picture is a very very good likeness of both. Muppets the both of them.

Personally thought his kicking was good today. Kev didn't like his kick on 78th minute when it went straight through to the keeper (which I though was his 1st wayward kick) and then proceeded to shout and swore at Collin like he'd just run over Kevs cat.
You don't sit in the East Greens or Blacks by any chance do you? It's just that the couple of "fans" you describe rather reminded me of some kids in front of us who had it in for Daryl Flahaven against Ipswich,a few years ago now.Althought we lost 1-3 and Daryl certainly gave away the first goal he wasn't responsible for the other 2 goals we conceeded! Not that the "fans" Looked like muppets exactly -but I know what you mean . :Winking:

It's taken me a little while to get over yesterday if I'm honest. That in itself shows how valiant and impressive our display was yesterday. I don't think it's been stressed enough, they are two leagues above us! They had to resort to punting the ball long and time wasting in that second half. That is the biggest complement our lads can receive. We took the game to them and they were utterly rattled. We were outstanding!

On to the players, Bridgey what a performance! That right back was absolutely blowing in the second half and that was down to how much Bridge made him work. We needed to steady the ship as a team in recent weeks but now our confidence is back, he has to play!

Morton was absolutely brilliant yesterday. It's one of the biggest headaches Maher has had since he's been in charge, Cav or Morts?

Our midfield is totally different when Coker plays, as soon as he goes off, we are nowhere near as dominant in the middle. No wonder he's being watched by all accounts.

I'm going to say the strangest thing now, but apart from individual errors, I thought the back three defended really well in open play.

Pepple is different gravy at the moment and I sincerely hope there isn't a recall on him 🙏 I thought Bonne worked tirelessly too and was unlucky with one shot. He just needs a goal.

Overall, it was a memorable game to be at and a real celebration of where we are now going as a club. It was a representation of what we have to look forward to. As I said pre-match, we have a team, management and owners to be proud of. Let this game be the linchpin for our season and future. Utb 💙

East reds. Doubt it's the same unless your knocking 100 and these kids have aged enough to collect their winter fuel payments. Their resemblance to Waldorf and Statler is remarkable.

It's always just loud enough to be heard by a 5 seats radius from them but never loud enough to be heard by the players.

So proud of the players. Great shift put in. Unfortunately a couple of moments of quality and a couple of minor mistakes has cost us. If we can play with that intensity for the majority of the season we will be absolutely fine and will be in the play offs.

Still don't understand why Pepple is first sub and not Bonne. We stopped pressing from the front until Waldron came on.
