Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

One notable thing was Bridge/Husin played their best games for ages. Was it the standard of opposition or the magic of the cup or are things starting to click? We’ll hopefully take whatever that was, bottle it and take it into the next league match.

We even got some decent corners in. Coker really gives us something different.. he doesn’t hide and he puts in a shift. Pepple too, I’m really starting to like him.

We saw yet another in Waldron back playing which is another option for Kev. We’ve suddenly got some depth.

Collin hesitated as he did numerous times. Think Taylor’s header was short and he isn’t blameless but Collin should be commanding his area. Think he has lost confidence and the back line have in him. Thought the back 5 looked more assured last week and would be surprised if Zack doesn’t start next week.
10 mins before the goal Collin charged out and the Charlton player (who was marked) got there first and luckily for Collin the players touch hit Collin rather than around him before Collin cleaned him out. I think this unsettled the lad. 5 mins after he came for a cross but never looked like getting there and was awarded a slightly lucky free kick. All in all it seemed to panic him. I think for the 4th a more confident Collin would have had a better starting position or would have pushed the player out wider and made it more difficult for him to get his strike away.

I think it’s time for a break for the lad. He will come good again, but is just a kid and needs to be taken out of the firing line for a month or two.

Aside from this, great performance from the majority of our players, especially the midfield and Pepple. Unfortunately Pepple had to go off after the hour, I think because he’d had to do Bonnes running for him too and was knackered. When he went off we didn’t look anywhere near as threatening going forwards. Oh to have Cardwell up top with pepple.

Proper cup game that in front of a packed Roots Hall.

Shame on those who try and take such occasions away from fans. As it was what should have been a euphoric finish that sent everyone home happy with the last gasp equaliser but instead home fans were deflated by extra time which was a bit of a non-event. A real pity there was no replay but I appreciate that Charlton must have fixture congestion with their Champions League games or whatever it was that replays were scrapped for and that must take priority over the English game, football tradition and fans that actually attend games and don’t buy half and half scarves.

First goal came from a weak Crowther header that put it straight back into a dangerous area. Gus then failed to close down and the cross then picked out ****ing Leaburn at the far post who towered over Ralph. His father/grandfather or whatever relation he is only ever scored 8 goals a season and at least 3 were against us without fail every ****ing season. It felt like this would be another Southampton away damp squib but we stayed in the game and were probably the better side. Crowther missed what looked like a golden opportunity blazing over the North Bank when a ball fell from him in the area only for Charlton to make it 2 with another high ball in the box that we couldn’t deal with, this time from a free kick that never was and that the ref then made a mess of his angles for the foam line. It was nearly three when Taylor was fouled and tried to grab the ball but the inconsistent referee let play go on but Charlton contrived to miss.

It’s a story as old as time: underdog plays a higher side and plays the better football but gets undone by the extra physicality of the higher level team. Whenever you get promoted don’t sign more talented, more technical players sign faster and stronger players.

I thought we’d fold but we kept at it. We had the possession, we had the territory and Maher won the tactical battle against his former teammate Nathan Jones but we lacked the quality. Coker changed that just before half time when some good footwork opened up a crossing opportunity that was clearly handled. The erratic ref confused everyone by pointing the wrong way for what was blatantly a handball and after a frantic few seconds trying to work out whether he’d imagined up an offside or a foul we realised that he had actually got a decision right. Bridge kept his nerve and sent us into the break only one down.

Second half we started out on a mission. We went close several times and had Charlton on the ropes. Bonne volleyed narrowly wide an effort that Bim nearly got on the end of. Then Coker hit one that the keeper saved at point blank range and it seemed like it wasn’t going to be our day. But the impressive Coker who was rising to the occasion made it two of our own on the scoresheet when his effort was deflected in.

Charlton then took the lead again - stop me if you’ve heard this before - from another high ball and we once more thought that would be that. That seemed to be the case as our subs failed to make the same impact. Pepple had been excellent with his strength and ability to turn cussing Charlton issues but was beginning to flag. His replacement Walker struggled to match Bim’s presence and whilst Miley stiffened up things defensively we lost a bit of our control with Morton’s passing. That was exacerbated when Moncur replaced the impressive Coker and continued to run down dead alleys.

Yet in injury time we conjured a goal out of nowhere. Walker’s shot was deflected in for a deserved equaliser. Three goals: our most at home so far this season from a penalty and two deflections reflecting both our lack of quality cutting edge but also our dominance in possession and territory.

That should have been that but the disgraceful decision to abolish replays meant we were subjected to extra time. Extra time wasn’t the classic the 90 minutes was, not helped by players cramping up puncturing play. Noor was the first to go down; Bridge spent the final 10 minutes hobbling about. The relentless changing of the rules meaning I wasn’t sure whether we were able to make another sub or were deliberately keeping him on for penalties. It didn’t make for a great spectacle.

As it turned out we didn’t need to worry about penalties. Yet another high ball was this time misjudged by I think Harry Taylor, who otherwise had an excellent game, with Collin also coming for it. Collin seemed to get all the blame from those I spoke to afterwards but it seemed to be the defensive header that put us in trouble. I suppose the highlights will reveal all.

So near yet so far. Great to see Roots Hall rocking. This was like the early 2000s when the likes of Bramble and Maher would step up for the FA cup games and they felt special occasions and we had some barnstorming ties against Luton and Chesterfield in particular. It was heartening to see some players step it up - Harry Taylor, Oli Coker, Bim Pepple, Jack Bridge all rose to the occasion. I’d like to think those who attended today will be keen to return. That was cracking entertainment for £18.

One thing please……

It’s…….

PEPPLE!

Whilst on the subject of getting names wrong, is our man on the mic ok? Anyone know why he disappeared second half?
I didn't notice he disappeared - but I did notice that he stated how many minutes of added time as we were about to take a pen - again!

For those who were unable to be there today, a brilliant summary.

As for half and half scalves, equally as sickly as the stupid term 'limbs' and digital football programmes. Today's game gave us our true football back, minus the extra time.

I wasn’t thinking of that specifically, more those who undermine it and disparage it but yeah televising it is a huge issue. Too many games on and not enough fans in the ground; too many fixtures rearranged for the whim of the TV companies - often at scandalously short notice.

Maybe it’s a coincidence but our biggest attendance of the season and easily best atmosphere (big gates don’t necessarily equal good atmospheres) and it’s a game that wasn’t streamed. Lower league football is about the live experience and attending in person. As we found out during the pandemic streamed games are a poor substitute. We need to preserve the culture of live football.

Today highlighted how small a difference there is between tier 3, 4 & 5 of the football pyramid.

What a fantastic spectacle, I am very proud tonight of every player wearing our badge this afternoon 💙

Really struggling to understand why Pebble is coming off at such a critical point in the match having been the best attacking outlet for us through the previous 66 mins, whilst Bonne (who was largely ineffective through the game) managed to stay on the pitch? The mood in the crowd also seemed to flatten somewhat after the substitution, although conceding the third certainly goal didn’t help either.
Pepple is not match fit!
He was clearly “blowing out his ar*e” after 60 minutes something the coaches are working on, remember he never had a full pre season.

Watching those highlights it looked like Taylor was at fault for at least two of those goals and was lucky not to be at fault for another one where Godden hits the crossbar.

I know people love him but I don’t see why people can’t critique him when he makes mistakes like that but slate Colin for a goal that was obviously not his fault such as the fourth goal, which was Taylor’s fault btw.
Because every season needs a scapegoat on the Zone.are you new here?

A replay would have been a fitting outcome after an exciting 3-3 draw. The extra time was an anti climax, this new format is a downgrade. A replay at the valley would have been a good night for the club, though realistically I doubt many home Charlton fans would attend. There seems to be little interest in the competition even from L1 and L2 clubs which is a shame.
There were some very low crowds today.

Our crowd was comfortably the highest in the FA Cup today through home fans alone, the decent turnout from Charlton was a bonus as well. Impressive for a national league club.

despite Morton playing well recently, Cav is a better player.
You see, I’m not quite sure about this. Watching Cav come back makes me realise Morton is far more creative and attacking to his game, whether instructed to or not, I felt Miley was far too defensive and didn’t really have that good of an introduction today when we wanted to get after Charlton. A real player I don’t disagree but in terms of structure and role - I do actually prefer Morton.

I heard some to, not needed, not wanted, not deserved. Support our team or if you can't do that sod off to Upton Park.
Usual pair in front of me bring sarcastic at everything Collin did and he got the blame for every goal. The below picture is a very very good likeness of both. Muppets the both of them.

Personally thought his kicking was good today. Kev didn't like his kick on 78th minute when it went straight through to the keeper (which I though was his 1st wayward kick) and then proceeded to shout and swore at Collin like he'd just run over Kevs cat.

That really doesn't say much for all those who've moved away from their home town and want to stay in touch with their local football club.It was impossible to even listen in to today's game if you were abroad and didn't have a VPN!

It's been a long day. A 340 mile round trip from and back to our home in Birmingham. But, despite the result, my son and I both agreed it was still worth the effort. What an incredible cup tie that was. We're absolutely gutted that we lost in that way, as we certainly didn't deserve that. We more than matched Charlton throughout the game, and for me we were the better side for long periods. On another day it would have gone our way. So incredibly proud of the team tonight. 👏👏👏
