Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

Really throws down a marker, when we were two down I thought a thumping was coming - it didn't and we played two levels above our current position in the football league.

Not saying it's a sure sign we should win ynis league, but with that level if fight and ability, we should definitely be aiming much higher than where we are.

Keep it up lads

Watching the 4th goal back, a commanding keeper would have had that situation under control. Taylor knowing we have a dodgy keeper is put into a position of trying to header it. Could collin have communicated? Even after the header I feel collin has got himself to blame for letting the forward turn and shoot and not being in the right position.
Laughable mental gymnastics to take the blame off Taylor. I love him as much as the next guy but come on!

This is on the defender, not Colin. Dreadful header into danger
I’d say it’s on both. A terrible header into a dangerous position, and one Collin could’ve handled if he’d held back a second before rushing out.

Looks like Collin’s shot of confidence and his defence is shot of confidence in him too, none of those goals conceded seem unstoppable.

Really struggling to understand why Pebble is coming off at such a critical point in the match having been the best attacking outlet for us through the previous 66 mins, whilst Bonne (who was largely ineffective through the game) managed to stay on the pitch? The mood in the crowd also seemed to flatten somewhat after the substitution, although conceding the third certainly goal didn’t help either.

Unbelievable game of football, unbelievable atmosphere and unbelievable spirited performance from our team.

Players were absolutely buzzing when they went home, all except for Collin who seemed devastated. Could have been the hero if it had gone 10 seconds more to penalties, but that's football as they say!

Brilliant advert for the FA Cup. BBC chose the wrong game!! Well done lads! 👏
Southend should now consider seriously consider making Pepple's move to Southend permanent.

As echoed, absolutely fantastic cup tie! One of the best games at the hall in recent years, proper football, proper atmosphere and we were definitely the better team.

Was walking out in front of a few Charlton fans and overheard them saying the exact same how they were lucky and that we were the better side.

One thing I will say, in recent wake of all the social media storm, I DID NOT like how Kev treated Collin at the end.

It was a mistake, I get it, we all get annoyed, but you put your arm around the lad (like one of the Charlton staff did at the end ) and tell him to keep his head up. The constant glares and shakes of the head, and then patting every player off the pitch apart from Collin, I didn’t like that one bit. We’ve all said recently his confidence is at a low.

If I was misreading it, fair enough, but just from what I saw.

Anyways, back to the league and hopefully crack on.

Paul Clark wasn't keen on Kev's regular criticism of Collin. He said it was classic "confirmation bias" - a phrase I didn't recognise - but I think he's right. If you believe that your goalkeeper always wastes his kicks upfield then you ignore the nine that he kicks well and have a furious rant at the tenth which is wasted.

Great match, great support and got to be positive for the rest of the season but Collin should be no where near the first team we will have zero chance of promotion with him in goal, good keepers command the box and defenders he makes our defence and supporters nervous wrecks.

Agreed. I think Collin definitely has lost some confidence but also I think every error he makes now is magnified. I did think a few times today, “keeper, that’s yours, call for it” but look it was very late in the game and in fairness to Charlton they didn’t **** about when it came to putting away chances. I’d love us to be as ruthless.

I don't see how Collin was at fault for their winning goal...Taylor literally headed it into the path of their striker and wrong-footed Collin. Also...Collins mammoth free-kick set up the chance for our second goal. We didn't lose because of Collin, we lost because our defense couldn't deal with Leaburn.

We were unlucky not to at least take it to penalties but scoring 3 goals against a team 2 divisions above us and taking them to 120 minutes is something to be proud of.

Watching those highlights it looked like Taylor was at fault for at least two of those goals and was lucky not to be at fault for another one where Godden hits the crossbar.

I know people love him but I don’t see why people can’t critique him when he makes mistakes like that but slate Colin for a goal that was obviously not his fault such as the fourth goal, which was Taylor’s fault btw.

I've just put something on the highlights thread. At first I thought Colin was at fault, but having watched it again, I don't think he was.

One correction though: it was GSM's header.

Re the chance that they smashed against the crossbar which would have made it 3-0 and game over…Taylor literally grabbed the ball on the deck but got away with it. I know the ref played on for the goalscoring chance, but shouldn’t he have come back at (at least) booked Taylor? Thought he got away with that big time

Unfortunately missed this game so someone else got to enjoy it from my seat…. My loss their gain….!

Seems this wasn’t a try and nick a 1-0 lead against the run of play and packed defence type performance, where the L1 side had 70% possession. It wasn’t long ball and hope to score from a corner. It was two sides playing decent football and by all accounts on the day we’re very closely matched. Stats say had the better of it?

That is the biggest compliment to the players whose confidence should grow significantly as a result. We are clearly doing something right…now onwards and upwards
