Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-4 Charlton Athletic

I agree that Leaburns header was great in both the direction and execution and Collin would never have got near it but Bridge and Ralph were marking him and neither even challenged him, they seemed to just watch him. I would always expect a challenge, even if it was poor but they both seemed to just look at each other after.

That said, I'm still 100% proud of all the players today for keeping us in the game to the bitter end
Yeah, Ralph was marking another player in the middle which left Bridge with Leaburn - a complete mismatch

Just before the cross came in I was hoping Husin(?) would drop another yard or 3 and pick up the central man allowing Ralph to drop to the far post. But Husin remained marking space.

Thatā€™s what this club is all about, to a man we were fantastic , usual problems were magnified by the quality of the visitors ( central defence and Collin) but thought we were superb. I did manage to tap the interactive screen as I walked in today . The crowd was brilliant and lovely to see such a partisan atmosphere. Itā€™s been a special day seeing Charlton win the FA cup final at rootshall today. But give me those games every bloody day over the **** we have to watch on a weekly basic . Loved it well played and amazinf to see us get so stuck into Charlton they looked as ****ed as we did at the end

Prior to KO today I was saying Crowther would struggle today and be shown up - how wrong was I and he made me eat my words. He gave (as did the others) such a performance today.
We matched Charlton out there and Everyone of those players today left everything they had on that pitch and that is all you can ask. Proud of them does not even come close and how refreshing it was not to hear moans and groan from people on the way out.
They all deserve a 10 today
Letā€™s rest the legs and go again next week

Very poor defending on most of their goals, but hey it doesn't matter now. The boys did us proud.
Having seen it again actually edited my comment, I think Harry Taylor is as much at fault if not more for that 4th as Collin. Unfortunately heā€™s also the culprit for number 3 .Shame as solid beside from a few key moments

And I think it was Taylor that shanked a great chance over bar first half too.Shame as solid beside from those key moments
I didn't get a clear view of what happened live as was in the south upper - having seen the replay that's mostly Taylor's fault, not sure what more Collin could've done without conceding a penalty. But you win as a team and lose as a team.

On he subject of mismatches. Why is Appiah Forson back marking anyone where he gives away a huge height advantage. Get him out of there and up nearer half way line. Swap him with a taller player if you must

Proud to be a shrimper tonight weā€™ve been robbed a of replay by the corrupt higher ups and the money grabbing premiership clubs proud of the players every one to a man play that every week and weā€™ll be up there in the league and what a amphostere if only it could be like that every week but I guess 1300 Charlton helps it anyway up the blues

Well that sounded gutting! Was on a flight from ko right up until the end. Every reason to be proud of our lads! Lots of compliments from Charlton too. Good club who have always been very welcoming. What really grinds my gears unfortunately is some of our "fans" going straight to there social media to tell them that they got lucky and we should have won. Please stop you look absolutely sour and bitter. We matched a team 3 levels above us. Personally I think we have done more than enough today

I donā€™t like to single players out, and ever since all those problems they have endured, I feel bad for having a pop at players. However, Crowther was poor today. His poor header led to the first, turned his back numerous times on headers, and blazed our best chance (at the time) into the scoreboard. Leaburn was a good centre forward, and I understand why anyone would struggle against him, but Crowther really struggled.

Also, Iā€™d need to see it back, but from my view in the East Yellows, Crowther should have cleared their winner off the line. As I say, need to see it again, and it maybe harsh, but that was my initial thoughts.

Unbelievable game of football, unbelievable atmosphere and unbelievable spirited performance from our team.

Players were absolutely buzzing when they went home, all except for Collin who seemed devastated. Could have been the hero if it had gone 10 seconds more to penalties, but that's football as they say!

Brilliant advert for the FA Cup. BBC chose the wrong game!! Well done lads! šŸ‘

Really entertaining game - overall felt we shaded it but were punished by not winning the first ball in the air for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd goals.

Not sure if it was the centre half or goalkeepers fault for the 4th goal but was a bit saddened to not see any of our players console Collin at the end. He was also outside the group when they went round the pitch after the game. He is very hesitant in the air and am sure Kev will be thinking carefully about that position.

On a positive, I thought all put in a really good shift and matched them in most areas although thought they dominated us aerially at times. Special mention for Bim who I think is going to be a really good player - holds ball up well and is very direct with his running with the ball.
Collin has deteriorated and lost confidence since the new goalkeeping coach arrived imo.

Heartbreaking is not too strong a word for that result. Every single Southend player gave their all for the whole game and I couldn't ask for more. To come back from 0-2 to 2-2, and then again from 2-3 to 3-3 was nothing short of amazing and I was dreaming of penalties, in fact we were making our list of probable takers when the Addicks grabbed their 4th goal. The crowd was also the best I've heard noise wise in ages, and the Blue Voice led the way in the West brilliantly, and the West responded magnificently. One sour note towards the end of extra time, several blokes started to make their way out and one comment was 'I've had enough of this lot'. Well, if you have, then just **** off and never come back.

Roll on next Saturday and the thought of the Yeovil supporters massing along the entire North Stand, that will be a superb sight as we smash 4/5 goals past them

Kevin Maher was ā€œincredibly proudā€ of his players after we were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup in the dying moments of todayā€™s game against Charlton Athletic.

The Shrimpers showed fantastic determination to come from behind against the League One club on two separate occasions, but Gassan Ahadme won it for Charlton in the 120th minute.

After the players fell to their knees on the final whistle, Maher said: ā€œIā€™m fuming because weā€™re out. I hate losing and the performance certainly didnā€™t deserve that.

ā€œCredit to our players for going two down and remaining on top for long periods. Iā€™m incredibly proud of the effort they put in and the quality they put in against a top League One side.

ā€œWe knew they were good at set pieces, but all the goals were really poor from our point of view, and they [Charlton] will probably say the same by the way. The ladā€™s got a great header on the first one, but itā€™s certainly avoidable as far as weā€™re concerned.

ā€œI should be standing here saying weā€™ve got to the lottery of penalties.
"For how we played in terms of going two down, coming back and looking like the team that created more chances, to lose it that way is disappointing to say the least."

ā€œI canā€™t tell you anyone that didnā€™t have a great game. We had plenty of chances that went begging a little bit, so Iā€™m frustrated. I hate pats on the back for being an unlucky loser, but when I look back at it, Iā€™ll be proud of the players and proud of everyone at the Club for how we played.ā€

Jack Bridgeā€™s penalty had got Blues back in the game after we went two down, but Maher says it didnā€™t affect his half-time team talk.

ā€œIt didnā€™t change too much. It was important that we scored before half-time, but we wanted to keep doing the same things and deal with certain situations with balls coming in the box. We wanted to stay on the front foot when we could and we did that throughout.ā€

On the winning goal, Maher bemoaned a lack of communication and authority: ā€œThereā€™s a little bit of indecision. Iā€™m not sure if thereā€™s a call or not and itā€™s just fallen to them.
