Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-1 Halifax Town

That was a really good performance against a top away side in this division - only their third loss away from home this season. Makes you wonder why we can’t play like that against the lesser sides in the division.

Great to see Kendall and Hopper open their accounts for the season for the club. Goodliffe looks a good CB and the kind of ****house player we’ve missed at the centre of the back three. It’s nice to see us scoring from set plays instead of just conceding from them.

Shame about the goal we conceded, not sure if it deflected but looked soft going through Hayes but two great saves from the corners after that. Really made amends for the goal conceded. Enjoyed seeing him time-waste at 2-0 like we see so many opposition keepers do.

Plenty of positives to take into Saturday - hopefully the curse of the Saturday 3pm can be put aside for that one.
The goal deflected off Husins heel otherwise would have been a routine save- Husin was last man- not everything came off for him but in this formation it’s essential the two CM put in real shifts- and once again Noor did al the dirty stuff very well and he has a great engine.

Well, that’ll do.

I thought we shaded the first half. They started spritely but we grew into it and the now typical three or four good chances we had went begging as usual. You’d be forgiven for thinking it would be another one of those nights.

Second half we dominated it. Chased, harried and pushed for everything.

Goodliffe had a shocking first half but grew into it well. Taylor was first class. Still not a fan of Noor & despite the oohs and aahs for his twirly pirouette, his casual Sunday league touch gifted them the opportunity to get back into it.

Thank **** for MOTM Charlie Kendall, who killed the game with a delightful goal.

Absolutely no shock to see us change our kit at HT. Halifax have been known as a tin pot outfit for a while, but to dress themselves in the tin colour was simply taking the ****.

Difference tonight wasn’t playing forward or with speed. It was taking our chances. Something we need to do much, much more of.

3 points of the Playoffs. Who knows…
We made more and took more chances because of getting it forward quicker and exposing their defence. We had gaps for the strikers to exploit. Give the strikers a chance, albeit two from set pieces, and they will score more than before,

NO MORE DEFENSIVE SETUPS!

I think every time we have played a more attacking direct formation we have won prolifically. Most times, bar the odd exception, when we play defensively we lose awfully.

If we go back to 3-5-2 Saturday instead of a 3 up top.. I give up.

Jumping for joy - Southend United striker Charley Kendall (Image: NICKY HAYES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United surged back to winning ways with a well-deserved 3-1 victory against Halifax Town at Roots Hall tonight.

The Shrimpers went into the game having suffered back to back defeats against Sittingbourne and Maidenhead United.

But second half goals from Gus Scott-Morriss, Tom Hopper and Charley Kendall saw Blues recorded a morale boosting triumph.

Halifax threatened first with Max Wright having a goalbound effort blocked by Shrimpers defender Harry Taylor before Blues registered their first effort on target when James Morton’s deep free-kick was headed down by Hopper into the path of Josh Walker.

The Blues forward brought the ball down well before unleashing a powerful volley Halifax goalkeeper Sam Johnson parried to safety.

Goalscoring chances remained few and far between before the recalled Charley Kendall sent a left footed shot over the crossbar from a narrow angle.

But, on the stroke of half-time, the Shrimpers went even closer to taking the lead when another Morton free-kick was headed down into the path of unmarked Scott-Morriss who saw his effort clip the top of the crossbar on its way over.

Southend changed to light blue shirts at the break after the first half was ridiculously allowed to start with both teams wearing similar coloured kits.

And it was the hosts who pushed forward first with Scott-Morriss sending a low, left footed shot straight at Johnson from 25 yards, However, Scott-Morriss was not to be denied for long and, in the 54th minute, the wing-back headed Blues in front following an excellent right wing corner from Morton.

The midfielder’s delivery picked out Ben Goodliffe at the far post and his goalbound header found Scott-Morriss who nodded home from close range for his 12th goal of the season.

The goal also made it three seasons in a row Scott-Morriss has netted against Halifax at Roots Hall but Blues were soon back on the front foot with Kendall having a 20 yard shot deflected inches over the crossbar.

But the let off was only temporary for the Shaymen as the resulting Morton corner, again from the right hand side, found Hopper at the far post who scored with a well-taken first time volley.

The goal was Hopper’s first since returning to Roots Hall and gave the Shrimpers an important two goal cushion.

Blue stayed on top and opted to make their first change of the night in the 71st minute with Macauley Bonne taking the place of Tom Hopper in attack.

Six minutes later, Leon Parillon replaced Josh Walker for his home debut but Halifax soon started to get back into the game.

Zak Emmerson sent a low shot straight at Blues goalkeeper Nick Hayes before Jack Evans came within a whisker of scoring as his well-struck shot flew inches wide of the right post.

Seventh placed Halifax made their pressure count in the 84th minute when a poor pass from Noor Husin started a counter-attack which led to Luca Thomas firing home a low, left footed shot which seemed to squirm through the legs of Hayes The visitors threatened an equaliser with Jack Jenkins firing wide of the left post from 20 yards.

But the Shrimpers stood firm and made it 3-1 in the 86th minute when Kendall raced clean through on goal before scoring with a powerful left footed shot from 14 yards.

The goal was Kendall’s first for Blues and enabled Kevin Maher’s side to see out the closing stages and secure a welcome return to winning ways.

Special mention to Husin waking up in extra time and throwing out the tricks and that twist and turn by Parillion in the box to leave the defender for dead. Both serious bits of quality
If that was the double spin turn in front of the East Blacks it was Bonne

Thought Halifax were one of the best teams we've seen this season ,and their quick passing and directness is a sign of what we've been missing. After a shaky ten minutes we settled into the game and the backwards and sideways was clearly missing tonight . After two good goals the standard changes to protect the lead were made and nearly backfired until Kendall's great finish .
A much better performance and an entertaining game for the faithful let's hope this is the start of a winning run .

Great performance in the second half, and great result. One has to ask, why can we only play well occasionally?

Personally I think it’s a symptom of a thin squad in terms of a few key positions. Sittingbourne and Maidstone were games where Bridge was missing through injury and we don’t have a ball carrier who can replace him like for like. Ralph moved over and it weakens that position but also weakens the back line he has left behind. When Kendall has been missing through sickness or knock, we don’t have a direct tenacious replacement who can harry and harass defenders for 90 mins and set that high press tone for others to follow. With Husin being off form, it’s been tough to stick someone else in that hole who has the same level of fitness and presence. It’s another weak spot in terms of depth, made worse by Miley’s fitness and form. When we have a fully fit squad we can actually play the way Maher wants us to, tonight being a good example of that. Few more signings needed over the summer to plug those gaps and we can be a bit more consistent.

A lot of positives to come from that as Maher backed up his words.

Halifax were one of the better sides we’ve seen this season with lots of movement and quick passing and for the opening 10 minutes we were second best. It’s to the players’ credit that they adjusted and problem solved and worked out how to get back into the game.

As the first half went on we gained the ascendancy but struggled to land punches. What was working though was Tom Hopper up front. Hopper provided the targetman we’ve been missing pretty much all season. He brought down or flicked on to a teammate as much in a half as we’d done in total all season. It gave Walker in particular the opportunity to get on the ball and ask questions.

That was important as the backline of Taylor, Goodliffe and Ralph plus keeper Hayes lack the ability to play it out and we needed to go more route one.

Lots of credit to whoever suggested we play in our third kit second half. That made it so much easier to watch - and probably to pick passes. Awful decision to allow Halifax to play in that kit.

Second half the work on the training ground by the coaching staff paid off with two well worked moves from corners. To do it once would be nice but to get two goals from the training ground is chef’s kiss. Morton put in good balls but it was the designed movement that stood out. Goodliffe peeled off and his header seemed goalbound but Gus poached it. Soon after another corner from the right and more love train routines saw Hopper unmarked who cashed in for his first since returning.

Thereafter confidence grew and the players seemed determined to feed the hard working Kendall so he could get his first too. When eventually he did it was an important one too as it killed the game. That was the type of goal he made his name scoring for Eastbourne and if he can score those he’ll be a real asset seeing out leads and hitting teams on the break. Of course what we really need is someone who can break down teams in low blocks. Parillon showed some nice touches so maybe that can be him in time?

That Kendall’s goal was needed is credit to Halifax. Not many teams in this division score from that situation. There was real quality in how they moved the ball and opened up the opportunity. You can criticise for losing the ball but when you lose the ball in the opposition’s half, up against the touchline and with their back to goal you don’t expect NL teams to punish you.

Noor nearly redeemed himself with some outrageous skill pirouetting past two defenders and so nearly playing in Parillon for what would have been goal of the season.

Hayes - solid at the back albeit not comfortable with the ball at his feet
Taylor - used his inspector gadget legs to recover a few times. An important defender on the counter.
Goodliffe - moved centrally but struggled early on when on his left. We eventually got past that by hoofing it long
Ralph - another consistent display
Morton - the main man. We’re playing less through him but he still set up the first two goals with his quality from set pieces.
Husin - showed fast footwork throughout with some quick one stuff passing and turning away from opponents. Such an important player with his combination of workrate and ability on the ball
Gus - needed that goal for his confidence. Looked very short of it first half but grew more into the game second half
Bridge - such a better balanced team with him in it. Didn’t see as much of the ball as normal but it was noticeable how much better our pressing game was with him restored to the line-up: it’s not necessarily eye catching sprints but more using his intelligence to block passing lanes
Hopper - he’s not the player of old but he battles and offers a target. Great to see him up and running and the goals list.
Walker - dropped deep second half which led to our best spell of the game. We need to get him on the ball more as he’s our best at drifting past a defender and that’s how we can open up teams when they sit back.
Kendall - worked hard and great to see him up and running as well. That he’s clearly been in his mind. He’s not the greatest player but his industry helps sets the tempo.

So we continue the Tuesday evening winning run.

Presume they travel from the north on match day. First 20 minutes we struggled to cope but the passing and shooting was grim. There’s more to football than running around as fast as you can. We got on top and started dominating but neither side looked like scoring.

Finally got two decent corners in and 2 goals. They went and pulled one back from our corner when they out sprinted us. (Not hard). Does everyone still want to leave out Gus - he’s the only one with a strikers instinct in the box.

Kendall finally managed to score - a good flick on from Macauley.
Halifax had two great chances and somehow we fortunately keep them out

I’ve been grumbling about our dark blue shirts for years. So nice to have a bright blue kit even though it was just for 45 minutes. You could actually see everyone all over the pitch.

Leon looked good - actually lifted his head to pass to a team mate rather than the knock it and hope.

So Saturday would logically be the same side but….
I agree with about the shirt colour, I have been saying the same for years too!
