Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-1 Halifax Town

A good performance all round. Morton my MoM. He is a class above and showing his worth. Very glad for Kendall. The lad works hard, did a lot of good things and capped it off with a goal. More to come from him I am sure. Moving forward quicker and more one touch passes, paid off. We look comfortable playing this way. Parillon looks to have something about him, no need to rush him, and I look forward to seeing him progress.

This is Nick's second interview, and talks more about the upcoming Halifax game. He was right about the goals will come.
Thanks for that. Love this fella. World class saves tonight and seeing him lap it up at the end from the ovation from the BV was enough to give us all a big smile.
That enthusiasm of his must be infectious around the club.
Much like Charley Kendal, his BBC Essex chat tonight, saying they believe they can beat everybody !
Characters are appearing.

Excellent entertainment. Don’t underestimate how good that result was tonight against a team that has only lost now 3 games away. Don’t want to dwell on Saturday but that tonight was so chalk and cheese and just makes it more frustrating what we witnessed Saturday. That starting 11 would have beaten Maidenhead. But that’s gone.

We started on the front foot and rarely gave Halifax a sniff until late in the game. We passed the ball much quicker, the movement up top was much better and once again Morton controlled the tempo. The crosses mostly into the box were earlier and caused problems. Walker really should have scored, either side of the keeper he scores. Gus also had a decent but harder chance. I don’t recall Hayes having much to do first half.

Second half we ran them ragged and got our rewards. Two set piece goals, when did we last do that? Two goals from strikers, when did we last do that? Really pleased for Hopper and Kendall who deserved their goals for the efforts they put in. Hopper was up against a real lump who looked very good. But in the end stole a yard and got his goal. Kendall looked like he was having one of those evenings but in the end scored a lovely goal after linking up with Bonne who looked sharp. Hayes made two great saves towards the end after conceding a bizarre looking goal. He in particular seemed so happy, think he really loves being here. I’m so glad we have him back

Hayes - 7.5 conceded a strange goal but handled crosses well and two top draw saves. Kicking ok but does need a bit of work
Gus - 7 much better and more energetic. Got his goal
Ralph - 7 solid and got forward when he could
Taylor - 7 see Ralph
Goodliffe - 7 thought he started a bit shaky but grew into the game. Don’t think he missed a header second half
Bridge - 7 better from him today and looked to cross a bit earlier which he needs to do
Husin - 7 showed glimpses of class and then the opposite. His work rate was good though right to the end
Morton - 8 we look so much better with him in the side dictating play. Always looks to move the ball forward and linked well with Husin. Set pieces decent and two assists
Hopper - 7 led the line well against a tough CB. In the right place at the right time
Walker - 6.5 maybe the one who didn’t quite hit the heights of others. Should have scored and worked hard
Kendall - 8.5 MOM, didn’t stop running created chances and unlucky not to score before he did with a well taken finish from Bonnes flick on

Bonne - looked sharp and got his assist. Might be tempted to start him instead of Walker Saturday
Coker -not much time on the pitch
Golding- not much time on the pitch
Parillon- already showing what he is all about. Did well and showed some glimpses of class and nice touches

Ref - one of the best we’ve had down at RH this season

Kev - loved the formation and loved the selections. No one wants you to fail. Please please please stick with this formation for the rest of the season and see where it takes us. Use the squad as there is now depth and options available

Another Tuesday night win under lights. Just need to get a win on Saturday to prove we can do it.

Great to win 3-1, but I'm certainly not getting carried away.
Up until we finally put in a decent corner and Gus followed up to head home, I thought we were bang average and hadn't really looked like scoring. In fact it looked a guaranteed 0-0.

Suddenly though, it was as though the confidence had returned and the pressure had been lifted from many of the players.
The tempo became quicker, our passing was quicker and more crisp and there was also some show boating from both young Leon and Husin for good measure. We finally saw some shots on goal and players were on the move and linking up far better.

Having said that, at 2-1, we suddenly looked really fragile again defensively, before out of nowhere Charlie Kendall raced away to finish clinically after a long ball up field was flicked on by Bonne. Didn't he enjoy winding up their centre back as we celebrated!

Even then Nick Hayes pulled off a couple of fine stops from close range following some goal mouth scrambles.

They key now is to follow this up with two more front foot performances and two more victories at home. After so many disappointing home performances this season, I can't say I'm feeling confident that'll happen. I'm hoping the players can take some confidence from tonight and prove me wrong.
Agree with this. The first half we were still painfully short of belief. The first goal is so important for this team. But once it came, we looked like a playoff team.

Football isn't always about formations and tactics. It is about belief and confidence and that has been our problem all season. Goals for Hopper and Kendall will really boost the whole squad.

Rochdale at home on Saturday will be a challenge but again it will be a team who will not sit back and that will play into our hands. We need to score the first goal.

Halifax have only lost six times all season to teams not called Southend United. That second half was fantastic.

It's been a disappointing season but those demanding promotion etc are missing the point, you'll only see a few 'successful' seasons in your lifetime if you judge them like that. Football is about moments and that Charley Kendall goal was among the best this season.

That was a really good performance against a top away side in this division - only their third loss away from home this season. Makes you wonder why we can’t play like that against the lesser sides in the division.

Great to see Kendall and Hopper open their accounts for the season for the club. Goodliffe looks a good CB and the kind of ****house player we’ve missed at the centre of the back three. It’s nice to see us scoring from set plays instead of just conceding from them.

Shame about the goal we conceded, not sure if it deflected but looked soft going through Hayes but two great saves from the corners after that. Really made amends for the goal conceded. Enjoyed seeing him time-waste at 2-0 like we see so many opposition keepers do.

Plenty of positives to take into Saturday - hopefully the curse of the Saturday 3pm can be put aside for that one.

@LennySUFC But time wasting is cheating and we are Southend United!!!

I think you'll find that Mr. Hayes was doing no more than merely participating in 'Game Management'.

:Winking:

Hayes had no chance with their goal. The ball took a wicked deflection off Husin's foot. Hayes had the shot well covered before that deflection.

Delighted - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: NICKY HAYES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was delighted with the response of his players in tonight’s 3-1 win against Halifax Town at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers went into the game having suffered defeats to Sittingbourne and Maidenhead United in their last two matches.

And Maher felt it was vitally important to get back to winning ways against strong opposition.

"We had to respond and the lads did just that,” said Maher.

"I'm delighted with the win and the three points.

"You see their away form and how good they are away from home and that's a very good win, especially after Saturday when we were disappointed with the result.

"It was important to get the win tonight."

The Shrimpers were on top in the first half but had to wait until the second half to take the lead.

And Maher was pleased Blues kept pushing in the final third.

“We had chances in the first half,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“Walks (Josh Walker) has hit one that's gone straight at the keeper and anything to the side might go in.

"Gussy (Scott-Morriss) has had one from the second phase of a set piece and we've had loads of bits and pieces in around their box.

"But it was important to keep doing the right things.”

The Shrimpers made their pressure count in the second half with Scott-Morriss, Tom Hopper and Charley Kendall all hitting the back of the net.

And Maher was pleased with the manner of the goals as well as those scoring.

"We got the first two from set pieces which were nice to score from,” said Maher.

“It was nice for Hops and Charley to score their first goals since coming in too.

“The time Halifax scored it could have been a nervous end to the game so it was nice to get that third one quickly after.

"It gave us that cushion again and I'm really pleased for Charley because he works his socks off.”

Kendall’s goal rounded off a pleasing night for the Shrimpers.

And Maher was quick to praise the striker’s display.

"There are times we get frustrated because we want him to look after the ball but his energy and his ability to get in behind got him that goal,” said Maher.

"He can finish and it was good for him to get off the mark."

Kendall’s goal sealed the win for the Shrimpers and continued their 100 per cent record on Tuesday nights at Roots Hall this season.

"Roots Hall under the lights is brilliant and you get a slick pitch too,” said Maher.

"It always seems to bring out the best in everyone."

"We got the three points but now we'll rest and recover and be ready for Saturday."

Who would have thought it?
It is almost the middle of February and despite a season that has seen us at various times endure trials , mishaps, chaos, disappointments and tribulations we are still within touch of a place in the play offs. We will not win every game between now and the end of the season and we might even achieve the unlikely while having to endure another Maidenhead or two.
I keep on saying it: the NL is one tough league. We were reminded of that Saturday and last night it was Halifax's turn.
Keep the toys in the pram, play it one game at a time and who knows? To hope to be successful we need to win as many home games as we can so Saturday is important. In fact, if we can keep on winning every game becomes vital.
Any long time Blues supporter will have experienced some ups and too many downs so a sense of proportion is always needed.
A great result last night and one that can be built on.
A shout out to all who kept the faith last night despite Saturday's horror show. Hopefully even more go on Saturday and the Hall is rocking to a degree where the officials feel obliged to give every 50/50 decision in our favour.
UTB (and Maher In!)

Great performance in the second half, and great result. One has to ask, why can we only play well occasionally?
This is it and it must drive Maher crazy. We get Barnet which was ****ing awful, followed by Daggers & Fylde then Sittingbourne & Maidenhead. Last night we visibly went up a notch second half. Maybe someone gave them a rocket, or something. The attitude seemed different (of course confidence was helped by scoring first). Big test now will be Sat .. and next Tues. Turning it on every few games ain’t enough.

Much better pace to the game and an enjoyable night. Only criticism being that we dropped back into the 2 up top placing Walker behind the front 2 when Bonne came on. Without the 3 man press up top it allowed Halifax to move the ball better from back to front. I’m not sure if it was a tactical change to match something they did, but when we changed it represented their best period of the game from which they scored and our goalmouth lived a bit of a charmed life
