Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 3-1 Halifax Town

Wouldn’t surprise me, if he wanted to come to us, if he enjoyed himself here.
Yes quite likely, if he feels he can get regular game time, we may well be happy to release him from his contract. The Cowley’s like to play a left and a right footed central defender if they can, most of ours currently are right footed like Ben. We lost left footed Aaron Donnelly back to Forest and then he was sold to Dundee, but have taken another lefty on loan from MK Dons.

But we are also fifth tier and have fifth tier quality players. It’s not about respecting the opposition it’s about not being two against three and being outnumbered in central midfield.

And also the fanbase in a less flattering light “strange murmurings”.
Don’t disagree on the numbers in the centre of the park, it’s the reason we saw Kev switch from a 343 to a 352 early on when he came in. Going forward you could argue if we get the ball moving quicker and more direct as we did at times last night we could do what teams to do us and just bypass the midfield.

Or if it’s not working change it, but go out with all intentions of imposing our will on the opposition.

It’s an easy game from the stands, at this level as you say, funnily enough there are fifth tier quality players everywhere. For me it’s about crossing the line at kickoff and winning your battles, doing the right things consistently not necessarily a tactical reshuffle or tinker that’s needed per opposition because the level isn’t great across the board and all the armchair tactical discussions and opinions are pretty irrelevant most of the time. More often than not it comes down to basics.

All we really want is performances like last night, blood and guts having a go and attacking a game of football

Excellent article from the Halifax official site.

Off the mark - Southend United striker Charley Kendall (Image: NICKY HAYES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

CHARLEY Kendall is up and running at Southend United after playing through the pain to score his first Shrimpers goal.

Kendall sealed Blues’ 3-1 win against Halifax Town at Roots Hall on Tuesday night with a well-taken effort late on.

And the forward found the back of the net despite suffering with cramp in both legs.

“I didn’t really have much time to think about it and my calves were cramped up to the max so I couldn’t do much other than score and that helped me I think,” said Kendall.

“It was a good header from Macca (Bonne) to put me through and I’ve been in that position so many times I know what to do.

“I stuck to my guns and stuck it away.”

Kendall’s goal came in his 11th game for the Shrimpers.

But the 24-year-old was always confident he would soon start hitting the back of the net.

“I’ll always back myself to score goals wherever I am and I’m happy to get off the mark,” said Kendall.

“It hadn’t really been playing on my mind because I’ve been taught and I teach myself that the past is the past and the present is the present.

“As long as I keep getting the chances and keep getting in those positions to score then I 100 per cent believe I will.”

Kendall’s goal helped Blues get back to winning ways after two successive defeats.

And the striker was delighted to pick up all three points.

“It’s excellent and what a way to bounce back from the weekend,” said Kendall.

“It’s a great feeling and winning is always the best feeling so we’re buzzing.

“We never give up as a team.

“We believe we can win every game because we’re such a good team.

“With the right belief and mindset in every game we can do it.

“From now on, we’re going to keep on attacking the games. “We’ll keep believing and we’ll keep chipping away.”

The Shrimpers, who sit 11th in the standings, host eighth placed Rochdale at Roots Hall on Saturday.

“Having them at home helps massively and playing Saturday Tuesday, as players we prefer that too,” said Kendall.

“It’s game after game and we’re churning them out.

“There are loads of opportunities and we like that as a group.”

Yeah and a big part of that is having the right players to play that way. For large parts of the season we just haven’t had the forwards to knock it quickly to.

Tom Hopper gives us a targetman and makes that a viable option for the ball down the middle that we haven’t had since Cardwell departed (Bim and Bonne could do bits of it, but that’s not what their games are primarily about). Charley Kendall’s movement and work-rate means we can play the channels/press as well.

Getting a targetman lets you do the basics. It’s why it’s arguably the most important - and definitely most underrated - role at this level of football.

Disappointed - Halifax Town boss Chris Millington (Image: Alan Stanford)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

HALIFAX Town boss Chris Millington is backing Southend United to build on their 3-1 win against his side.

Millington admitted Blues fully deserved all three points at Roots Hall.

And he now believes the Shrimpers will continue to improve.

“Southend deserve all the credit,” Millington told the club’s YouTube channel.

“There’s some strange murmurings around this place at the moment but the management team here deliver really solid, well organised teams of good National League quality season in, season out.

“They’ve done it again and their momentum will build because good, well-coached teams do build momentum.

“We’ve got to show the same qualities but tonight we looked like boys and they looked men.”

Halifax improved in the latter stages of the second half but were unable to work their way back into the game.

And Millington offered an honest reflection of the game.

“The better team won and at times it looked like men against boys physically and tactically,” said Millington.

“They were just stronger and quicker in most areas of the pitch.

“We carried very little threat up top and we’re disappointed with the first hour.

“We got what we deserved.”

And Millington was also frustrated by the manner of the goals the Shrimpers scored, with their first two being scored from right wing corners.

“It’s poor,” said Millington.

“It’s a strength of theirs and they attack the ball.

“They’re very dynamic in their movement in the box but it’s nothing we haven’t prepared for and we’ve shown the lads.

“Gus Scott-Morriss isn’t the most threatening in terms of his stature but he’s a significant threat in and around the box from set pieces.

“We didn’t deal with it and we had too many players not at the races today.

“The reason behind that I’m not sure but we need to find out quickly. “

Interesting to have this opinion from an outsider. We sound pretty good!

Being honest it was that comment that really made me share it. I respect others opinions and his and others I have read and viewed on line over the weeks from outside our Club struggle to really understand the pressure on KM from some of our fans. Yes there is acknowledgement that we have under performed this season results wise and there are dissatisfied fans around style of play and tactics but the perception is we have a very good management team which is the envy of some.

Interesting comment about his opinion of our corner tactics?.
