He looked tired when he came off, to me.

Most around us felt we needed to strengthen in midfield as we approached injury time with a 1-0 lead and pretty much everyone around us called it to be O'Neill to come on.

I'd have brought Atkinson on personally, if that was necessary.

Yep, it was a tough call and also whether McGlashan or Wordy should go off, but I wouldn't criticize the final decision.

I know Fortune wasn't on the pitch for too long but I think he will be a good signing. Did all the rights things, won headers, played McGlashan in with a lovely ball and looked years younger than 35.

I was assured on another thread on he that he was big old and slow- past it. All that shows is the number of people who clearly never even seen him willing to give the impression they had. When he was warming up I was wondering who the hell he was- looked way younger than 35 and in very good shape indeed. When he got on the pitch I could see why PB has signed him- and why we have the option to extend in Jan. As one of 4 strikers looks good business and as far as I can research fit with no history go injuries.

We were the better side on play (not by much) but created the better chances. It was a promising performance and at time we played some nice football. Confidence is so important and if we build it we have sufficient quality to do well. We are going in the right direction.

Oxley - 6 not a lot on target and can't remember a significant save. Distribution good, did ok
Demetriou - 6.5 did OK going forward and defensively. Very reliable- good on the ball. Found out for pace and bailed out brilliantly by Lenny in the first half
Inniss - 7 fine on the deck, commanding and positive in the air. Makes a big difference in both boxes
Ferdinand - 7.5 not yet match fit, and a bit sluggish. But even so reads the game brilliantly and excellent on the ball- calm no hoofing and plays through the midfield. Once match fit will be a cracking signing- and yes only 31
Barrett - 8 forgot his birth certificate. If you didn't know and someone said he was 30 there would be no evidence to say that was not the case- as always committed totally and some great blocks/tackles (BTW if I was Pardew I would be pretty pleased to find Innis was playing alongside Ferdinand and Barratt from a development viewpoint)
Coker - 7 did OK, getting more and more like his best- one the penalty (again) and some very nice attacking interplay
McGlashan - 7.5 Doing very well. A real attacking threat with place and the system suits him defending and chasing high up and attacking the box through the inside forward channel.
Leonard - 9 MOM for me. Took a friend who has only been to Prem games before and he thought the standard was better than he thought it would be by far and that Lenny was the best player on the pitch. Unbelievable engine, fantastic tackling back, pace to burn and getting better on the ball
Wordsworth - 8 quality on the ball. Give us midfield creativity to go with Lenny's dynamism.
McLaughlin - 7 not at his very best but I think it was his header that hit the bar? Not quite the pace of McGlashan but very good on the ball
Mooney - 7 works hard for the team and falls over much less than he did

Subs:
Cox for Mooney - 8 brilliant in the build up and delivery for the goal and with Ranger nearly back and the arrival of Fortune must be looking more positive. Close with the chance which was at pace and behind him
Fortune for McLaughlin - 8 one most in the air and directed it to a team mate as well, strong, decent on the ground and looks nothing like a 35 year old and very trim/fit. Very pleasant surprise.
O'Neill- not on pitch long enough

I've never been a lover of the weird coloured football boots that are so popular these days. So I was very happy that Barrett and Wordsworth both wore black adidas boots complete with three white stripes. Proper mens' boots them.

ps..Not sure why I felt the need to post this, but did it anyway.

Woody's are coloured stripes, possibly Irish colours but not sure on that - definitely not just white though.

The actual stripes look white to me, but we can probably run a poll on it to be sure.

I left Saturday's game with a bit of hope. Basically there is a team there and I think that they will improve. Yesterdays performance was not one of a team that could be labelled as 'relegation fodder'. It is not going to be pretty at times and I am sure there will be some frustrating afternoons to come but I do feel there is enough there to keep us up. If we can keep gaining points and keeping our head above water until January then who knows. January is the critical point. We cannot afford to take the opportunity to increase and enhance the squad at that point. Do that and I think with some key additions we will be alright. I don't see us ripping up trees and threatening the play offs but hopefully we can achieve a respectable final position.

With the introduction of a ball winning midfield terrier I think you are right.

Cox's shot is on the YouTube highlights, looks a bad miss to me, it is fast but it's also flat so you'd expect to hit the target.

https://youtu.be/jqs8f48kNcA

What you don't see on that is that not only is it hit faster than it looks, but it's behind him slightly and he was arriving quickly so had to adjust at the point he struck it.

Lenny hit the cross a bit too hard for him to naturally run onto it and side-foot it in.

That was my only criticism of Lenny, yesterday. That he tends to overhit his passes to the front men. He did it a few times in the first 20 mins.

No overall criticism of the chance itself on either him or Cox, but it wasn't a "sitter" by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm sure that all of us, as experts, have our views on Cox's effort. Bottom line, he didn't score but we're really happy that he was 1) on the pitch with Fortune, and 2) He got his foot to the ball and had a go. Time to move on maybe?

Don't tell me you're about to close another thread? Power crazed perhaps?
