Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Yeovil Town

Doesn't Charlton also prove that we do shoot!

We shoot more than some posters give credit for. Unfortunately most shots are relatively poor.
I'd argue that it proves we can but I wouldn't say it proves we do. We had possession in their final third a fair bit yesterday but I'm really struggling to remember us taking a single shot let alone one on target. It's a shame stats aren't fully recorded for NL games like they are for the higher leagues as I'd love to see who is right and if confirmation bias plays a part

We hardly shoot because by the time we get the ball up there and stop fannying about with it the opposition have every player back defending so there is no space left. We need to attack more at pace to find holes in their defence and we just don't do that very often.

How many have we scored from a corner/set piece? How many of our goals are as a result of a ball over the top where we’ve got space behind? Pepple vs Tamworth is one.. we should be scoring more like that but our build ups tend to be slow so the box is full of defenders by the time we’re in range. We don’t score enough that’s for sure or counter attack fast enough, we can most definitely improve. Can Maher improve this? I hope so .. 🤞🏻 .. he’s already shown he can tighten up at the back.

I think part of the reason we're terrified of attacking at pace is because we lack the athleticism to recover if we get countered.

Watching Man C against Brighton yesterday was exactly this. Their current run of defeats suggests that maybe that style of play has run its course but for a NL side to try to play that way was never going to work.

You didn’t mention set pieces 😋

Seriously though to say we can’t improve our attacking output is madness. We need to be better in those areas. To state this doesn’t mean “Maher out”. I’m sure Maher if he’s reading this is banging the table saying “****ing yes!!” (maybe not ..)

I think teams know how to defend against it now, they just let them get on with it, you cannot do much damage whilst you are playing it about in your own half and just want to keep possesion at all costs.

Kev has IMO always set up not to lose, whilst of course the defence is important it means sweet FA if you cannot score yourselves or your set up in reliant upon defending and hoping for a break or deflected goal.

His style as a coach mirrors the priorities of his playing career. He doesn't seem to have developed a broader sense of the game. Makes you wonder how much input if any Currie has on the way we play.

I had good view of the goal from the Greens. It was not a fluke, he meant it. Gus and Olie gave him far to much space to take couple of touches, get in range and look up. If its one v one then a right back might be forgiven for not wanting to dive in but we had two players and neither closed him down. This has happened to our cost on several occasions this season. The first Charlton goal, same at Barnet. The winner for Fylde etc.

Equally for the goal we were way to deep. Almost on our 6yd line so Collin has to take the man on the front post into account with his positioning. Either way what a TV screen never shows is the real curve an dip on shots like that. It was well executed and Collin had no chance.

The big disappointment for me was our fear factor when down to ten and Kev in the stands. The worst bit was 10 mins before half time. Yeovil worked hard to still get 10 men behind the ball. We would commit no more than 4 or 5 on attacks that would alway fail with that ratio.

I was hoping we might step up and attack with some purpose and be more direct in the second half. At times we had our 3 CB's and just the Southend reject to mark. Not testing their keeper once in 90 mins is embarrassing. 10 men, snide grass of a 4th official and female refs are no excuse.
I was sat right behind Plant when he aimed his cross. i.e. 100% not an intended shot

I am all for women refereeing in the mens’s game if they are competent. But why are men not allowed/chosen for the women’s game? I would have thought in our enlightened age of equality, that should be consistent?
have to agree. On the 'ref' thread I suggested women should referee in women's football and men in men's football. The women refs in men's football already appear to have the advantage of being able to return down to the women's game level if they struggle whereas men refs that struggle don't appear to have that option available to them.
Rightly or wrongly, a women officiating 22 men and the managers creates additional unnecessary pressure that affects the flow of a game. It also generally creates a mismatch of physicality ( height\speed ) that can cause a problem.
Definitely there have been good ones but my view is that the crossover is detrimental rather than progression for the game.

When are we going to admit that he is inconsistent, negative, stroppy and plain weird with his football decisions. Currie should be given a go, could he be worse?

He’d have have to be taken off but Bonne should have started—he will score goals and we didn’t look at all dangerous with Walker starting up front .
I thought Bonne only had a 1 year contract? Maybe you are right, I could see him scoring around five goals in the Isthmian league next season.
