Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Yeovil Town

If it was based on ball retention in a team’s own third then York would be top.
This. It isn't a style issue. York are doing much better than us because they are far more effective in both boxes and are a threat from set pieces. We held them at bay on the opening day and they equalised from a corner. We lack that strength.

I am slightly concerned that these issues have been constant in Maher's time though. It seems strange that we have never really looked like addressing this.

We have nostalgia for when we were really good (entertaining) in a season, but those periods had so many set piece goals too (Barrett, Corr, Mohsni etc).

I know this is obvious as he played in one of our most successful times/teams, but boy do I miss Barrett. That loveable, enthusiastic organiser. He impacted the game so much. He'd bomb forward every now and then and try and affect the game, score from a set piece and organise a defense. Just imagine having a player like that now, sitting in the heart of that back three. It's what we miss massively.

Of course, up front needs addressing, but if your CB's are getting the first goal for you, spaces open up in the game for others to score. CB's scoring is every teams bread and butter in tight games, especially away from home. It's just mind-boggling that this has been such a problem for so long.

I think Barrett was our leading goal scorer until Freddy signed as well.

Has the art of defending set pieces changed? Thus making it harder to score from (our defensive record at set pieces maybe suggests not). I'm thinking there is far more holding, pulling/pushing and blocking going on nowadays that makes it harder for the attacking team. Interested if there are any stats around that may show number/proportion of goals scored from corners/free kicks, not just us, but in general that may show a decline?

They don't work together in a 352 as Morton gets shifted to left central midfield - not a position that plays to his strengths. They'd be fine together in a 4231 as a defensive midfield pair.

The lack of an alternative to Husin at LCM in a 352 is one of the big deficiencies with the current squad/formation.

Completely agree.

Noor is our biggest issue at this moment in time for me.

Our free kicks and corners are woeful.

Completely uninventive and rarely trouble the opposition.

This is one of the bluntest teams we have had. Even last year with 12 or 13 players we looked good for a goal or 2.

We just literally play keep ball with zero intent to get behind the defence.

It's boring, obvious and yields practically nothing positive.

Oh for the good old days of having wingers with pace and actually got behind teams.

In the new year I assume JS will be looking with Kev and co to bring in new faces. Anyone know who is on the white board?

I think we all want Kev and the boys to succeed, but I wonder how long it is before we have to look at our football future.
If we are winning, style of play can't really be questioned, but if we are losing and the style of play is dreadful, no one is bigger than the club.
Hopefully this weekend was a blip, but I'm not sure how long we can put up with this one step forward, two steps back.

Not sure any of our current forwards are capable of scoring 20+ season. I haven't watched to much of Southend this season, so haven't got great deal of knowledge who should play week in week out but I do find it strange that moncur is now condemned to the bench. There a player who can unlock a defence and is decent of set pieces. Maybe he to attack minded for maher ball.
I believe Moncur has an injury.

Personally I think it has got a lot harder to score from Corners, for the reasons well stated above. Funnily enough though Ive seen a few more headers going in from the limited Premier league games I happened to have watched this year, albeit surprisingly from very poor marking

We all get excited when its a corner. Its closer to the goal, the ball is allegedly booted into the goalmouth and we think anything can happen
Except from these figures I have seen, the chance of scoring is around 2% !! see below. N.b. Though figures from Premsh.te league

How often do teams score on corner kicks?

Corner kicks are a pivotal moment in a soccer match, often seen as a prime opportunity to score. However, a detailed analysis of over 11,000 matches reveals some surprising statistics about the effectiveness of corner kicks.

The Preconception

Many soccer enthusiasts believe that corners are a genuine threat to the opposing team. The common notion is that by sending the ball into the penalty area, the team initiating the corner kick has a good chance of scoring, especially if they have tall players who excel in aerial duels.

The Numbers

A reddit user made a serious analysis with algorithms to test if corner kicks can significantly increase the chance for scoring a goal or not.

To test this, he examined 134 English Premier League (EPL) matches from the 2010/11 season, encompassing 1,434 corners.

The results were eye-opening for many football fans:

  • Only 20% of corners led to a shot on goal.
  • A mere 10% of these shots resulted in a goal.
  • In essence, a minuscule 2% of corners led to a goal.

Sorry to disappoint?

Interesting - and that's before the dark arts of holding and blocking really took a grip (pun intended). Be interesting if there were an update on that.

But from those stats average roughly 5 corners per team per match. 46 games per season, 230 corners a season. 5 goals per season from a corner.

Terry Johnson & Bernie Lewis, most excellent

100 per cent agree has been an issue ever since we have been in this league. These extra goals from set pieces count for many points over a season.

I really dont think much is going to change,we will be stuck with a good performance every now and then to keep all the believers happy, We really dont have the players to change much and have a legend who is very stubborn in the way he wants the team to play (robotic ). Until we get a CD in the Barrett mould and a leader and enforcer in the midfield not much will change, Also sorry to say an experienced GK and some out side players with pace to burn who know how to beat a man and cross a ball, Stay as we are and we will be safe in this division but no higher than mid table which is not what COSU want .Changes need to be made both in the playing staff and management. Kev reminds me a little of Sturrock , saved us when we were at rock bottom ,steadied the sinking ship and got us back on an even keel, now we need to move on as we did with Sturrock at the time . .

I really hope we get some attacking players in January or this is going to be a mid-table season. Have to be getting play offs next season. If we don't then Maher should go

Agree with most of above. But think Kev will get more time.
I personally think nothing will change soon. But if the next couple of months is a repeat of the past few months in performances things could easily change.
I’m sure JR and co won’t want too watch much more dross on the pitch. Disgruntled supporters getting on their backs, falling attendances. They will want to protect their investment.
