Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Yeovil Town

We are a slow build up possession based side. In this league that is pretty easy to play against by being well organised and physical. Until we add another component to our game, i.e pace or some initiative from set pieces, we will be mid table or maybe scrape a play off place with a fair tail wind, otherwise make peace with us being a bang averge non league side this season.

I’m perhaps slightly rose tinted, but the quality pre 2018-19 was so much better than it has been since.

We really need a return to the EFL to get those big crowds back.
So the quality was better when we were in League One with a side that should have made the playoffs vs in the NL with a team thrown together during brief windows outside of transfer embargo's?

Agree on the second point, although the crowds this season have been pretty impressive given where we are in the table. Not sure it'll last after games like Saturday's...

As far as the Yeovil game including time added on we played 70 mins with 10 men and matched them. And they are in the playoffs. So I struggle with the idea that in the circumstances it was a bad performance.

That said this league is getting harder not easier to get out of as every year as there are more teams that are competitive. The upcoming transfer window will indicate how keen we are to make the playoffs/go up this year. We are still recovering in part from being way behind on recruitment due to the delay getting the embargo lifted.

Going forward getting out of this league will be very difficult without at least investing in some proven quality to go along with the lower league “gems”.

Sustainability in this league is a pipe dream. But it’s a difficult balance to get right in terms of the money you put in on the playing side. Glad it’s not me making those decisions…

I know it’s stating the obvious, rather pointing out where we used to be. NL is not our level as a club.

The sooner we get out of here the better for club finances and fans. That’s just my opinion anyway

I haven't got time to read this all this morning, as it's my Sunday at work. Yeovil were a bunch of simulation experts who conned and played the ref at every opportunity. We've got to be nastier - if their defender is grappling with our forward, then jab a knuckle in his rib or something. He'll soon learn.

I thought defensively we were pretty solid throughout. Jeacock will rightly berate himself for what he did, he had no reason to be out there, but he's young and he will learn. All we needed to do after that was hold on, and then they go and get a fluke of a goal late on.

My MOTM Harry Taylor, with James Morton a close runner up. Miley to start next game in place of Husin, please.

Not our day, not our game.
No, Miley and Morton cannot play together. Have we not realised this yet!

Morton deserves to stay in the side, but Miley has to wait for his chance.

My take on the game, where was the intensity from the team for the Charlton game ? We know they have it, but apparently not for a match against a team like Yeovil.

Sadly I think we need a new keeper, every week there seems questions about Collin. A loan goalie is not the long term answer. If he is good we run the risk of him being recalled, if he is not we will drop him. We need to build up a defence that knows the keeper and the keeper knows them.

I'd love Maher to succeed but to do so would require playing forwards with intent. We're in November and we've got about as much cutting edge as a spoon ffs.

If you won the league on ball retention in your own final third, we'd already be champions.
If it was based on ball retention in a team’s own third then York would be top.

Unfortunately if you play negative brand of football and you don't get results then your open to criticism..... what I've seen of maher ball is team who waits for mistakes from opponents instead of taking the game to the opponents. That is disappointing but is it the lack of quality maher has at his disposal which makes him reluctant to play attacking brand of football. Personally I think this squad is under cooked which needs some investment. Defensively we look not up to it and continue to make silly mistakes, from the attacking side we lack number 9 who going to get 20+ season. Hopefully those areas can be addressed in January.

Despite the sending off and the constant delays our style of football which is so laboured, predictable and boring meant as usual we could have played for 3 hours and not threatened their goal, where was the fight and spirit from the Charlton game?
Firstly, they played the same, if not more boring than us. More side to side then we did, more slow build up play.

Secondly, every time we got the ball to Bim, he used his strength to get away from his marker only for the ref to blow for a foul. She could not distinguish between strength and overly aggressive play. Had she known what she was doing, we would have been more attacking but she set her stool out from the off and nothing was going to change that

Worrying claim from Yeovil boss Mark Cooper here…

I wanted to come and watch Southend last week, and they wouldn’t leave me a ticket. They wouldn’t even reply to our emails. They’ve refused to make any food for our players, which is a National League rule.

With our front pairing looking really good v Charlton , our manager then decides to leave the one player who could still get 20+ goals ,on the bench against moderate opponents.

If has nothing to do with who is playing there with them, it never works with them 2 starting together.
They don't work together in a 352 as Morton gets shifted to left central midfield - not a position that plays to his strengths. They'd be fine together in a 4231 as a defensive midfield pair.

The lack of an alternative to Husin at LCM in a 352 is one of the big deficiencies with the current squad/formation.

Not sure any of our current forwards are capable of scoring 20+ season. I haven't watched to much of Southend this season, so haven't got great deal of knowledge who should play week in week out but I do find it strange that moncur is now condemned to the bench. There a player who can unlock a defence and is decent of set pieces. Maybe he to attack minded for maher ball.

It's great that the club is stable but do people seriously want to watch several more seasons of sideways backwards football and mid table national league.

Crowds will dwindle if this is the case.
The worrying thing is, I think quite a few people are actually content for this to be the status quo, probably for no greater reason than their pride doesn't permit them to admit that Maher won't and can't change his ways, and we won't go up playing this football.

IMHO, this is the by far the weakest this league has been since we have been in it. There are no stand out teams, and everybody can beat anybody. It just requires consistency.

I agree the football that maher plays isn't particularly attack minded but have Southend got the players to play the football which wins games by attacking football. What I've seen is a defence which continue to make silly mistakes..... we need some investment in new players in January to compete at the top end of the league. COSU need to dig deep.

Yes,you’re right about Moncur.Coker shows decent attacking intent and Husin is a very good player but Moncur is definitely a player that Maher needs to include and work out how to get the best out of.
