i think if it's Sturrock's choice we'll keep him....,

i'd presume his wages would be suspended until he's out, but what shape will he be in and how long til he's match fit again?

How bad was his crime? Yeah he was allegedly provoked and racial abuse is not to be tollerated, but the use of the weapon was the decider in his sentencing...

Players have gotten off with far worse (John Terry, Lee Bowyer...), and players such as Lee Hughes and Marlon King, have been given a 2nd chance,....

I don't agree with the likes of Hughes and King earning 000's playing again, they don't deserve 2nd chances IMHO, but if this sets a presidence the I'd keep Ryan Hall on our books, providing he can prove it's behind him...

As much as I dislike Marlon King and Lee Hughes for the crime he committed why don't they deserve a second chance?

There is no way in a month of Sunday's Ryan will be "relieved of his duties" by the club.

I am sure they will all stand by him and do all they can to either reduce his sentence or get it thrown out.

With any luck, he'll be granted bail by the Crown Court which will allow him to play a few games until the re-trial.

Can't see there being a re-trial when he pleaded guilty!

Has he appealed the sentence, or is that speculation on your part?

Probably just poorly worded. I assume an appeal would need some sort of hearing...but not a re-trial.

I think we may be feeling sorry for ourselves a little bit. We think that this ruling may/will affect our chances of play offs.
What we should be thinking (in my view) is that Ryan Hall will have this over him for the rest of his life, when his footballing days are over, any job he wants to apply for. He will always have the stigma of ex-con, long after the memory of whether or not Southend reached the play offs in 2011.
Also the other party involved, being attacked (allegedly) racial abuse or not. The incident will no doubt affect them personally more than any of us on here.
(unless of course any zoners are related to either of the parties involved)

Would it not seem strange also that the club would appeal the decision immediately and then upon the appeal being rejected sack the player involved? That just doesn't make sense and if it's correct that we have appealed the decision I'd be staggered if when it is rejected Hall is sacked. Given the amount of support he has received from the rest of the squad - most of which were there at the time - I'd also suggest sacking Hall would be a tremendous way to wreck team spirit at the football club.

I'd be amazed if the club got rid of him, and all the sadder if they did cos he'll immediately be snapped up by someone else and would no doubt earn his new club a pretty penny in transfer fees in the near future.

He pleaded guilty, so if the Club were going to do anything they would have done it then. Whether he got time or got community service, I don't see how it really makes any difference in that sense. I doubt anyone at the Club is even thinking of sacking him.

Yes sorry. I belive an appeal for bail was made at the court this morning, which was rejected by the Magistrate.

I think the club are now taking this to the Crown Court, where they will again apply for bail. If bail is granted then there will be another hearing, which will hopefully result in a reduced sentence...If not, then Hall will remain behind bars until Mid May.

Even if we can get him for a few games, between now and May, that will be a positive.

This is a huge blow for us, possibly big enough for us to miss out on the play-offs now, he's a really creative player and we're going to miss that talent in the midfield. Hypocrisy how Gerrard and other players who have had similar incidents get away with this though. Still, sounds like from the reports it was the correct thing to do and you just have to hope he doesn't lose focus whilst doing his time.

Agree. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer, though, as I think he's out of contract.

I understand what you're saying mate but quite frankly I find it impossible to extend any sympathy for anyone who racially abuses another person. Hall shouldn't have done what he did, no doubt about that. However if the other person involved is affected personally by what happened then maybe they've learnt a valuable lesson themselves, if he has to live with that also then he only has himself to blame (especially considering he got off scot-free despite not only racial abuse but also fracturing Hall's jaw).

maybe not so much Hughes, but King is a sex case... nothing more to say

As for Ryan Hall, i'd like to see him back in a blue shirt,..

was his sentence harsh? 20 weeks? for what is reported as affray and possession of an offensive weapon? ... full story in today's Echo apparently.

Just affray.

The possession of an offensive weapon charge was dropped.

in the eyes of the law affray is defined as

"An affray is defined at common law as a fight between two or more persons in a public place so as to cause terror to the public....

was the other person not jailed then? sorry, haven't followed the story until today....

I don't think Hall even pressed charges against the other bloke. Even though he allegedly broke his jaw!

The fact is he is young and there is money in him. RM would never consider sacking him. I don't care about Rooney and other premiership scum but I'd love to know our clubs view on how this is being dealt with. That could mean we are working with him on rehab rather than brushing it under a carpet
