Rio 2016 Olympics

I don't understand the hype around him he just hasn't got any better.

He's handsome.
He's well spoken.
He's grown up in the public eye.
He's got a sad back story (dad passing away).
He wears very very very tiny trunks.

I understand what you're saying, and why you're saying it but completely disagree. If someone is so talented that they're able to do that why should we stifle him? To give others a chance? If he's better than them then they need to get better.
I guess if you are good at swimming then you are lucky there are so many short events that you can enter.

You do feel sorry for some of the Olympians that only get a few seconds of competition and then they are out, mind you its the taking part and not winning as per the Olympic Ideal.

Maybe have running backwards as a track event so Usain Bolt can win some more medals:smile:

Anyone get the feeling that our medal haul is going to be lower than that in 2012?

Team GB had a target of 48 medals for Rio and were looking to beat our best overseas haul of 47 at Beijing. (2012 total was 65).

We must be a few behind on the target. I'm not sure Edward Ling's Bronze was a target so we might have one back there. But some events not going as well as thought, like the Men & Womens Laser sailing although the windsurfing guy has started well. Should find out his name really as I feel like a Journalist just calling him a windsurfing guy!!

Daley gets all the plaudits for doing exactly the same as he did in 2012. I don't understand the hype around him he just hasn't got any better. And as for the synchronised partner that's just a joke.

Team GB are not doing very well a few let downs overall and our medal tally so far is poor. I can see us being lucky to get over 10 golds at this rate.

Gutted for Yafai and Fowler in the boxing thought they were going to get medals. Fowler unfortunately drew the expected gold medal winner in the prelims and got schooled.

The Chinese were nailed on for a gold. 3rd in the world is nothing to be sneezed at!

Personally I'd just mix the paralympic sports/games into the main olympics. I'm always a bit 'sported out' after the regular olympics and I think the paralympics suffers from that a bit, plus the fact it does seem weirdly divisive - blend the athletics events together and merge some of the cycling/road running/indoor sports so that you get better crowds who are seeing more events in a day ticket.

I'd get rid of golf and tennis from the regular olympics (my view is that for sports in the games, the olympics should be the pinnacle - it clearly isn't for tennis and golf.) to free up some scheduling space.

Logistically this would be incredibly difficult. You'd substantially increase the costs (think of all the extra athelete accommodation they'd need to build). There would be timetabling difficulty. You'd have to extend the games.

And at the end of it, the paralympic sports would probably be lost in it all.

Personally I'd abolish golf, but failing that removing it from the Olympics would be a positive step.

He's a celebrity.

Serena Williams 5 double faults in one game and loses to Ukrainian Elena Svitolina what an upset.
Williams just seemed to give up, not sure if she was injured but played poorly in the doubles the other day as well.

As for my doom & gloom yesterday, we are actually ahead of our medal toll from 2012. At this stage 4 years ago, we had 4 medals, this time we've got 6.

I seem to recall that it was the first Wednesday that things really took off for us in 2012. Canoeing (?) gold, then Wiggins in the time trial (and Froome's bronze) and from there it was up, up, up and away.

For those who are keeping an eye on things while maintaining 100% work productivity...

12:30 - 13:46 - Women's time trial (Pooley)
13:00 - Shooting double trap (qualification). Final is 19:25 with a good shout for gold
14:00 - 17:00 - Men's time trial (Thomas and Froome)
14:10 - Men's quadruple sculls final
16:30 - Rugby 7s GB vs NZ

Probably missed some stuff..

Froome got some work to do at 24 secs back. Cancellara looking good!

Em has been watching lots and said the reason the evening swimming is on at 2am our time because the Yanks won the rights and decide the times! Not sure if the track and field will be the same! Let's hope not!
