Jack Wood joins Torquay on loan

Nicely weighted pass for the first goal by the Torquay number 10 followed by a sublime bit of skill by same guy just after 1.30. It’s Omar Mussa. Isn’t he someone we tried to sign ?
Yep, we apparently had a deal for him sorted and photos taken holding aloft a Southend shirt only for Ron to scupper it by IIRC not agreeing a release clause like the consortium agreed for Cardwell, allowing Daggers to nip in.

I think Musa is absolutely mustard. Can’t understand what he’s doing at that level.

How do you or he know how much support he was or wasn't getting? Are you on the training pitch every day observing? In team meetings? In the dressing room?
If he’s playing more he’s getting the backing of the manger so would feel more supported and part of the team rather than knowing whatever you do in training doesn’t matter and you won’t start

Starting matches and being supported (emotionally, psychologically, whatever) by the management team are not mutually exclusive.

Just to play devil's advocate, perhaps what he's doing in training isn't good enough to warrant getting a start?

The standard, even at the top, of NL South and North is far off the standard of even average teams in the NL. You would expect him to stand out as a full time pro against part time opposition. I think he has a decent football brain but is neither quick nor strong enough and probably lacks concentration.

Agreed.
He’s not even getting game time where opportunities should allow, so that points towards failings off the pitch.
Perhaps Kev just doesn’t like him (player attribute wise), perhaps his attitude is lacking, perhaps he’s just not fit enough?

Who knows.

Some of what our current starting line up are dishing up isn't good enough during the match. But as long as they put the effort in in training it seems they deserve their start.

Torquay top of NL South. Watched highlights of both recent games with Jack doing well but please note this comment from the league leaders fans forum

"Can we please stop playing the sideways/ backwards passing game, we are not that good at it and it makes for nervous watching, it is obviously a training ground practice because we play it regularly, surely as a back four player, you have the ball at your feet, look up and run preferably forward you never know what will open up for you."

P.s. Games looked pretty pacey to me

Most short term loans stay at The Roslin. SUFC foot the bill and have a very good deal with them to allow this. I'm told it also makes the player feel good and well looked after, staying in such a nice place and location.
I was talking about our players going out on loan elsewhere. In this case it’s Torquay. Abit of a truck just to go on loan to a non league side.

Came on as an 84th minute sub in their 2-2 draw with Weymouth, the score was 2-2 when he came on.

Think it’s probably the wrong move for him, they are up there and doing well so it was unlikely he was going to be a starter each game, seems like he was brought in for cover. Shame think the lad is desperate for some regular playing time.

Clearly not being given fair chance. Their manger has his favourites and Its obvious he doesn't like JW.

I guess this is the reason from Torquay , but a month isnt long so interesting to see whether loan extended or Jack off elsewhere ( on loan or otherwise ) as next adventure

Southend midfielder heads to Plainmoor

Torquay United’s midfield options have been strengthened, with Southend winger Jack Wood agreeing an initial 28-day loan deal with Paul Wotton’s side.

After Wood joined The Shrimpers from Kings Langley in early 2022, a productive loan stint in 2022/23 with Tonbridge Angels saw him make 22 appearances, scoring 8 goals.

Following his return to Roots Hall, 22 year-old Jack has become a regular member of the Southend matchday squad, making 30 appearances and scoring three goals in the fifth tier last season, before adding another ten from the bench this term.

He is the best on the training pitch every week though.

With Jack Wood - I went to the pre season game vs Bishops Stortford. Jack wood came on in the second half. A clearance was hit about 40 yards and would have hit his head if he stood still. Shouts from Collin of “head it”. Wood was 5 yards away by the time it arrived and their fella headed it unchallenged. He may be the best player in the world, but if he doesn’t want to get risk getting hurt he will never get game time.
