To be fair I always did my best to avoid heading long clearances or goal kicks back in the day. The last thing you need on a freezing February Sunday morning whilst nursing a hangover is a wet muddy football slapping into your forehead like a punch from Tyson Fury. Im sure no one noticed.. But I guess you have no choice if you’re being paid for it

Years ago as one of those very soggy muddy football came heading from high in my direction from a strong goal kick I thought I would run straight on to it, only for a defenders boot to smash it into my face before it hit the ground from about 2 feet away. The result was a prone me with a very broken nose ! ( thats caused a few problems since !

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher will 'evaluate' what is best for the next stage of Jack Wood's career.
Wood's 28 day loan at National League South side Torquay United expires this weekend.
And Maher must decide what to do next.
"It's something we've got to evaluate," said Maher.
"Jack went out to get minutes but it hasn't happened.
"It's the level below but he's gone to a team who are high up in the league, I get that.
"I think Jack wanted to play and it's something we'll look at."
Wood has made three substitute appearances while with the Gulls.

Not sure that might be correct I read it as Kev saying as Torquay are top and going well ,Wood is not getting the game time the club and he hoped for

Hopefully it has educated the posters on here who claim JW is clearly the answer Kev stubbornly refuses to see.
As so often in football young potential doesn't always convert to an end product. Wood needs a really good 12 months, otherwise he will follow a long list into the Isthmian league level

The problem is that is Jack is a bit of an enigma. He's not good enough as a striker to score many goals, even if he started 35 games. He hasn't the stamina or tackling ability to be a midfielder.

Tbf Torquay are at the top of the NLS so was never going to walk into their team. He had a good loan spell with Tonbridge Angels a couple of years ago at the same level. I think another loan in the NLS would be good for him

ts certainly telling us we sent him on loan somewhere who can’t provide the one thing we sent him there for. Might have been sensible to send him to a mid table team rather than a team flying and reluctant to make changes (understandably). What it probably tells us is nothing.

When we are chasing a game and need that attacking outlet, he could do a job there and play more advanced, last time he did that he played well and got the assist for the winner or equaliser (can't remember)
Basically a winger
But not from the start of a game, obviously
