But this club has been down that road so many times it's ridiculous .

Eastwood second time
Barnard second time
Freedman
Harris
Goater

Probably missed another 20 names but you get my point,I reckon these marquee signings are not for the club but a devious fiddle somewhere along the line.

Strike Goater from that list. He scored 11 goals that season helping us to win the league, and every player in that squad couldn't speak highly enough about his effect on the dressing room. Eastwood especially developed significantly as a footballer that year.

On every other occasion you've listed the signing was lauded when it first happened and was said to make good sense. This is what I'm talking about, you continually use the benefit of hindsight with reference to signings which completely devalues a) the fact that manager's aren't afforded that particular superpower when delving into the transfer market and b) the fact that on most cases, the signings were welcome.

We're stepping up a level, we need experienced players to help to at least consolidate ourselves in L1. Players like Hunt who have been there and done it at a high level. To stick a youngster from East Thurrock in would be like starting the season with Jason Williams, it won't happen. A club manages to strike very (VERY!) lucky like we did with Eastwood first time round once in a blue moon, the chances of it happening are paper thin. By all means we should look to recruit the odd promising player from non-league and loan him out so we can watch his progress, but certainly not for the first team.

You're right we do need pace, a Mooney/Hunt/Pigott strikeforce with a quick loanee (or someone like Theo Robinson perhaps) would see us do very well in L1.

The 3 forwards you mentioned will without doubt get the hump simply because their pitch time will be limited as all 3 won't play together,at least one will be benched and God forbid if Phil plays one up then 2 will be benched.

Everyone on here were wetting their pants at the signing of Fred and Lee whilst I urged caution(their recent stats were uninspiring)which proves the point that experienced ex higher division players rarely work as they have earned their money and not up for the fight.

Goater was in the team that won us promotion to the Championship. Even Freedman finished his first season with 5 goals in 16 games.

Barrett, 35 year old - helped us win promotion last season
Phillips, 28 year old "crock" - won POTY in 2nd season
Barker, 30 year old "crock" - won POTY in 1st season
Easton, 31 year old - was our captain
Sodje, 33 year old - another who helped us gain promotion to the Championship

What do you think of Timlin, 30 year old who has had long-term injuries, signing a new contract that could last 3 years?

Spencer Prior
Andy Edwards

I suggest you look back at the threads when they re signed,I certainly never lauded their return.

Can we talk about forwards which is what this thread is about.

Well this is interesting. Freddy signed five months before mrsblue registered and there's only one poster I remember "urging caution" on the day that he signed. Hmmmmm.

I've missed the Jam_Man v mrsblue battles.

The season must be approaching

Certainly is, and I was hoping that repeating the same old opinions/arguments over and over again was a thing of the past for this coming season. Say it once and move on? Fat chance!!!!!

Oh the glass is always half empty.

Noel Hunt is a quality player. If I was a forward like Pigott and I was told Southend had signed him I would think that 5 more goals I would get.

He is not and never has been an out and out goal scorer, he's a very, very skilful and clever player who brings others into the game. That said at L1 level he probably will score as well. If he is coming it is because he wants to play more football rather than pick up fat pay cheques.

Not long ago everyone was complaining about wanting to be entertained and bemoaning route one. Noel Hunt you will want to watch if you like quality football with the ball on the deck.

Apologies if mentioned elsewhere but isn't this the bloke who went in studs up on Petr Cech's head, resulting in the Timlin-esque headgear Cech wears? Not that it makes him a bad person (if it was him), I was just wondering thats all..

Of course, keep moving those goalposts.

So from last 10 years (you said in another post) there are at least 20 names (you said in another post), yet I found:

Eastwood (2nd time)
Barnard (2nd time)
Neil Harris
Dougie Freedman
Shaun Goater
Paul Furlong (did he even play?)

So if you want to be really picky, only 1 was a success - Goater. Now go through every other forward we signed and I'd be fairly sure that the ratio of success to failure would be pretty similar if not worse.

That was Stephen Hunt, who also played for Reading and was also at Ipswich last season. Maybe it is a 2 for 1 sale?

That was his brother Stephen.

That comment will be blown right out of the water if Hunt signs. He could easily go and earn far more money at Chicago Fire than he ever will with us.

Sorry but if you genuinely believe players from leagues like the Conference South are acceptable signings for the first team when we have just stepped up a level then I have to agree with the rest on this thread......

Haha you are quality!

We are on a thread regarding the signing of a forward, many of you have drooled great signing,I have my doubts .The clue is in there somewhere.
