I'm told there's a beer tent in Leigh Library Gardens which is where I'll be all day on Saturday (the gardens I mean, not the beer tent!). This weather had better sort itself out though!

Drove across the Pennines last night with a colleague to watch BORIS and Russian Circles, along with support act Saade, at the Salford Islington Mill. The Islington Mill is probably be favourite venue around... in the middle of grimy Salford is a trendy art-space with a really good space for gigs. A well stocked bar with cheap continental lagers and local ales.

Anyway, support act Saade I hadn't really heard, but the two-piece drum and guitar combo rocked really hard... some decent stoner rock to kick things off....

Then Boris came on, the Japanese trio have added guitar-wizard Michio Kurihara to their live and studio efforts and they rocked really hard. Able to mix between noise-pop, drone and stoner sludge rock in a blink of an eye... they were absolutely superb. Drummer Atsuo had a head-set mic so sing and whoop along, and a huge gong behind him. Guitarist Takeshi had a double-necked guitar, and Wata is definitely the fittest Japanese woman I've ever seen.

Russian Circles are a technical post-rock/post-metal band I'm a not a huge fan, although they were loud and pretty impressive to watch.

all in all a great night... and my ears are still ringing!

John Mayall, the Godfather of British blues at the Apolo.Still in great form at 77.Not to sure about the new band though.Drummer was all right but I thought the new bass player and lead guitarist were a bit pony.Certainly not a patch on Walter Trout.Still a hugely enjoyable gig in one of the best standing venues in Barna.:drummer::guitar:
Mayall's getting classier these days.He no longer checks the punters in at the front of the house.Instead he flogs his merchandise to all and sundry.

Kings of Leon were totally brilliant in Hyde Park last night. Molly's Chambers was a particular highlight for me. Paul Weller doesn't half get tedious after a couple of songs though.

On to Milton Keynes I go and the Foo Fighters next week.

He heard Phil Burdett's 'See You Later, Forever' and realised that he couldn't own that Billet stage after all. :Worthy:
I wouldn't have thought he's even heard of Phil Burdett.
Given that his brother-in-law died in the ealy hours of Monday, I suspect that was his real reason for cancelling. R.I.P. Mike - total legend.

As long as you are buying mate.

Just a shame it was that dodgy Devon ale, H. :'(

Sunday's proceedings were much more like it though ... really enjoyed seeing Steve Hooker and band on their LFF debut outside The Ship early afternoon and the sun stayed out long enough to welcome the amazingly under-appreciated Phil Burdett and band on The Billet stage that evening. Looking forward to his new album out in September and getting Leigh-on-Sea's living legend played on Source 96.1FM this Saturday.

Leigh Folk Festival:-

Saw Steve Hooker and Dog Roses at the Ship, Emily Portman, Philip Henry & Hannah Martin, Steve Turner, Skinny Lister, and Phil Burdett at the Billet, Famous Potatoes and others at the Peter Boat and various people at Sara`s Tea Garden as I shuffled past many times. Also heard some nice noises coming from the Scout HQ.

My faves were Steve Hooker, Philip Henry & Hannah Martin , Phil Burdett in no particular order (plus St Peters IPA in the Billet!)

Ah - I'd forgotten that was what that mental juice was called. Also enjoyed 'The Reverend Casey' who were playing outside The Ship before you arrived from your early stop at The Elms.

`Fat Men in Shorts` aka Tom Palmer and Phil Beer at the Polperro Festival (at the marvellous Crumpelhorn Inn)

You've seen him a few times now. Sounds like he's a dependable performer and exactly what you need at these festivals. I'd like to see him play at the music festival in Beer - now that's what I call congruence.

What's the name of the bar next to the Apolo that has beer-taps on the benches? superb!

Don't think I know that one(and I thought I knew pretty much all the bars in that area).I usually have a beer or two at the Apolo bar outside, part of the disco and in the same building or at a tapas bar opposite the Paral-lel metro.I'll check your place out next time they have a decent gig there-probably not until September now.
This weekend we're off to the Costa Brava to see B.B.KING(at Cap Roig)tomorrow and Mavis Staples at Sant Feliu (Porta Ferrada)on Sunday.

Blues and Gospel on the Costa Brava

Saw BBKing at Cap Roig on Friday night and Mavis Staples at San Feliu yesterday.
BBKing (at 85) is past it I'm afraid. He was more interested in talking to the audience than in. playing or singing.Doubt if he'll be back and I doubt if I'd bother to go if he did.I first saw him in Las Vegas back in the early 70's and have seen him many times since.Sad decline.
Mavis Staples (at 69 I believe)is still in fantastic form.We saw her in a small auditorium from seats close to the stage in the 2nd row.She really knows how to work an audience and gave a fantastic show.Really made up for Friday night's disappointment.

Chucho Valdes at the Theatre de la Mer in Sete.Absolutely wonderful venue and concert. He played this number too.As good as Afro-Cuban jazz gets.:piano:

I'm delighted that the mighty Phil Burdett will be embarking on his first tour of Cornwall in November - saves me a 750 mile round trip to get my next fix of 'The Thames Estuary Troubador.' For those of you lucky Southend folk who don't know about the genius in your midst, pop along to 'The Old Hat Music Bar' this Sunday afternoon ...
