Freedman Overated

No we are freedom fighters for the right wing, thats our only bond, down with the clique and that traitor Brown and long live Boris.

You're off topic again, and I'd suggest you check the membership list there.

I think that graysblue.jr must have a season ticket for a different club from me. I see someone who uses his effort productively. Freedman rarely wastes a passing opportunity and find himself space on a regular basis. He provides leadership, demonstrating where players should be at set pieces. We look rudderless up front when he doesn't play. It's not about how much effort you put in, it's about what you do with the effort that you expend. I would rather have Dougie Freedman than a headless chicken that runs around a lot but isn't where we need him to be. I saw Sheringham play for West Ham when he was 40 and he played in a similar way to Freedman - conserving his effort for when it was needed but finding lots of space. If you are reading this Dougie, I think most of the supporters appreciate you.

I spy a 606er - welcome on board!

Nail on the head!

This thread is a joke right?

Well I was certainly under that impression too!! It's quite clear that Dougie has played at a much higher level than League One, his play ozzes class and he's by far our most intelligent player. The way in which other players look up to him and take his advice is an added bonus. It's just a real shame he's had injury problems this year.

I promise to check the list,if you take that hook from your lip, have a good remaining weekend.

obviously i know not everyone who goes to the games post on here, but if so many people were moaning about his passes how comes on here it's the majority who treat him like a god when he is far from it? where are these people who were moaning? probably too scared to go against the majority and be outcast.

What are you expecting from him? Every pass to come off? Never to make a mistake?

It's exactly that sort of attitude that saw Mark Gower (who could very well be playing in the Premier League next season) get heckled by a large minority of our support for five years.

No one has claimed that he's God. No one has claimed that he walks on water.

Thanks for the welcome OBL. I agree, South Bank Hank, the username is a bit rubbish but it's to do with not being able to put anything like my name on hotmail and deciding to use a weird combination of my initials and my wife's. Not that you asked......

Dougie has bundles of experience and oozes class up front plus he pops up with goals and set up yesterday's winner, one of many assists this season.

His importance to the team is massive.

no, but people seem to think he is the saviour of southend. that he will single handedly propell southend to premier league status and so on and so on....
these are the facts, yes we have dougie freedman. but it is not the same dougie freedman as 5+ years ago. he has built up a good reputation, but he is not justifying it at the moment. people seem so blinded by the "big name" that they refuse to acknowledge his poor performances, which has occured a lot this season.walker, sankofa, francis, betsy, macca have all had bad games where passes have gone astray, they have lost possesion and at times looked lazy and not interested. for these performances they have taken a fair bit of stick. freedman receives none though.
for example, player "x" misplaces a pass and is slated as crap and not concentrating or is just simply not good enough. when dougie does it, it's not classed as misplaced because he is too good to misplace a pass, no it's his superior intellect and superior mind has seen a killer pass but because the rest of the team are crap no-one anticipates the run or the pass.
how come no-one wants to comment on te penalty aswell? i posed the question earlier. walker missed a pen a few weeks back and was almost hung drawn and quartered. tilly has even come out and said the lad's confidence is shot to pieces. then freedman concedes a pen and everyone is quick to say "oh unlucky". he has been around the game for donkey's years. he knows to keep his hands down in the area. so regardless if it was deliberate or if it was ball to hand, the pen was correct (unfortunately) yet, as it's freedman no-one wnats to say it.

Only to yourself I'd bet.

I'd suggest you re-read the thread again and then perhaps highlight exactly where anyone suggests anything even close to what you're saying there. You argue he's over-rated, other people are arguing that he isn't...

Nothing like an over-reaction though is there? Or a tidal wave of hysteria?

When Dougie loses the ball then yes, he looks bad. His work rate will never see him winning it back.

He is a player to give a calm pass or stay calm under pressure when the goal is within sight and he makes things happen. A real danger upfront for us and it's about time he was playing regularly.

He's class and we don't have too much of that right now.

We got round the back of Tranmere twice yesterday and both times we scored. The second time it was Dougie's pass across the 'keeper that saw us win the game.

I can't believe I've just wasted time reading this thread thats not really about Freedman anymore.

If its gonna go back on topic, then I think Freedman is class and is, at the moment, too intelligent for most of our players, hence the constant pointing and talking from him which is great for the others. Didn't go to the match yesterday as i was away but have been impressed every other time i have seen him play. By the way, at the moment, i wouldn't want Dougie chasing every lost ball, going gung-ho into challenges as i wouldn't want to risk him getting injured again. Ease him back in!

exactly. like i have said he can do a job, but he doesn't warrant a 90 minute role. 15-20 is ideal for a player like him. surely bringing him on for the last quarter is better than playing him from the start. we all agree he has no pace, can't skin a man and his work rate is not that great. so surely it's more sensible bringing him on for the last quarter, where his legs and mind will be fresh and the oppo will be tiring. TBH i can't see freedman in the starting line up next season. when revs and frenchy are fit and in form they will be 1) tearing defences to pieces 2)keeping their place in the startin XI (considering injuries) week in week out

That's right - wrap him in cotton wool while we have to, as we'll have to do with Laurent for a little while and as we've done regularly with Barney. Top man in my book, lot of respect for the guy.

how comes no-one has a view or even a thought on this?

or more importantly this? perfect example of double standards from some of our fans

Well a player who can only last 15-20 minutes didnt do badly to set up a goal after 90 minutes...

Who else is going to create chances for our other strikers ?

Its no coincidence when he is in the side Barnard etc start scoring and when he is injured they all dry up.

We have no creative player in the side apart from him.

Would help if we played to his strengths, ie on the floor. Yesterday our only tactic seemed to be hit long balls from the back 4, a 34yr old is never going to reach. Shame we didnt sign him last season when we actually played really fluid passing football. His link up with Gower and Bailey wouldve been a joy to watch.

Er missing a penalty is somewhat more irritating then a player getting back and defending and giving one away.

Come on admit it Freedman ran over your cat didnt he ?

moussa? macca? laurent? revs? betsy? everyone of these have or have the ability to be involved in or set up a great goal/opportunity this season. personally we need one more creative midfielder, or a left winger, but to say freedman is our only creative player is mad!!!
