Freedman Overated

We have left him on the field in our last 2 games and he has won us one game and helped win yesterday by an assist. Off the ball he is one of the best strikers around, just not as fit and fast. I think Goater was a bit better because he was taller though.

The only comment I will make is ask Leeds fans. When Freedman joined them on loan from Palace last season they were heading for mid table. With Freedman in the team and scoring goals they got to the play off final, before losing to Doncaster.

That isn't going to happen to us, but I honestly think he is one of the most intelligent players I've seen in a Blues shirt for some time.

so why did leeds decide not to sign him full time or at least try and get him on loan again? i'll tell you, his wage demands were too high and a team like leeds (one of the biggest in this division) didn't rate him highly enough to pay his wages.
same as why did he leave palace? anyone who actually believes that it's because he "wanted" to play for us is not living in the real world. palace would no longer offer him the money he was on and his contract offer was substantially less than previous offers. dougie (fair play to him) has come here as one of the top wage earners on his (maybe penultimate) swansong season

He didn't go to Leeds permanently because he wanted to stay down south, he went to Leeds because he is good mates with Gary McAllistar

When Freedman signed for us he met Ron Martin without his agent and said "Pay me what you pay the rest of the players, I want to play for Southend"

Leeds did try and sign him, but by all accounts he didn't want to uproot his family to move to the North of the country. He was released by Palace as he was out of contract, rather like a certain Kevin Maher from SUFC. As a free agent ir his entirely his prerogative to sign for whichever club he chooses.

I don't know what he earns and any comments regarding his salary is pure speculation as I explained to you (if you are GB sr) when we signed him. It would appear there is a certain amount of antipathy from your side towards Freedman, and whatever anyone says won't change your perspective.

simple. dougie is overrated. despite the odd flick and occasional through ball he does not do a lot.

Lol, score the winner one game and then set up an injury time winner the next and he is not doing a lot.

He is the one player we have who can unlock defences with a pass, and actually score as well.

He should be the first name on the sheet every game and all the other strikers look better when they play with him...

 Exactly.

I am not being funny but the guy is 34 and coming to the end of his career, what are you expecting? He was brought in for expierence for the young players we have coming through the books. He has scored a few goals for us and I think he has played very well. He plays the sort of role Eastwood used to play. Can do **** all for 89 minutes of the game and for that 1 minute can create pure brilliance and score the game changing goal!

Dougie's a foreigner working in England - coincidence?

I think that graysblue.jr must have a season ticket for a different club from me. I see someone who uses his effort productively. Freedman rarely wastes a passing opportunity and find himself space on a regular basis. He provides leadership, demonstrating where players should be at set pieces. We look rudderless up front when he doesn't play. It's not about how much effort you put in, it's about what you do with the effort that you expend. I would rather have Dougie Freedman than a headless chicken that runs around a lot but isn't where we need him to be. I saw Sheringham play for West Ham when he was 40 and he played in a similar way to Freedman - conserving his effort for when it was needed but finding lots of space. If you are reading this Dougie, I think most of the supporters appreciate you.

Worst user name ever!! ;) but welcome to the board Ibweeajwaah...

I think Dougie brings vital expereince and quality too the tem,he kept his cool yesterday too set Betsy up and scored winner last week. And dont forget he is still probaly finding his full fitness after lengthy injury.

simple. dougie is overrated. despite the odd flick and occasional through ball he does not do a lot. fair enough, nice pass to set up betsy and scored a nice goal 2 weeks ago, but he is simply past it. no commitment, no passion. a true lazy player, yet he is one of the top wage earners at the club with some fans absolutely worshiping him. when he first joined he was a very exciting prospect. i still believe him working behind the scenes can't be bad, but his constant whinging and pointing on the pitch has a clear negative effect on some players. he has no pace so can't/won't take anyone on, and when he does he gets nowhere. then he won't try and win the ball back, instead he points or shouts instructions to someone else. he is not our best striker and not even our second best! those titles are occupied by frenchy (laurent) and revs. people say he "oozes class" and all that but afterall, he hasn't exactly set the world alight during his career. 0.3 goals per game if im not mistaken. i totally expect the backlash from this thread but am not too bothered. i'd rather speak my mind than be a sheep and agree with majority, just to live an easy life. i wonder if anyone else is brave enough to go against the majority and speak their mind? i know i'm not the only one who's fed up with him.

I don't agree with all of that, but he has a point about Freedman being overrated. There was a spell in the second half where he misplaced about five consecutive passes and no-one said a word. If that had been a young up and coming player like James Walker or previously Matt Harrold the crowd would have completely crucified him.

Freedman does offer us something, but a lot of people seem to think he walks on water and can do no wrong.

I don't think that's true at all. I heard plenty of people moaning about those passes. Of course he's going to make mistakes. Again, if he didn't he would be playing for a bigger Club.

i've harldy ever agreed with you on topics but completely commend you for what you have put. exactly spot on in that post. walker missed a penalty a few weeks ago and got anhilated yet freedman concedes a penalty and no-one says a word. regardless if it was deliberate or ball to and he's a seasoned pro and should know to keep his hands down in the area. his odd flick or through ball (which is apparently worth his high wages and keeping this club afloat) apparently out weigh his constant missed placed passes (which he has no intention of trying to win back). i agree he offers us something, but definately not through his work rate. and by workrate i mean someone like revs who gives 110% no matter what. dougie probably gives 60-70% at best.

obviously i know not everyone who goes to the games post on here, but if so many people were moaning about his passes how comes on here it's the majority who treat him like a god when he is far from it? where are these people who were moaning? probably too scared to go against the majority and be outcast.

clearly some people (apart from the first few posters) can't read or just refuse to. i didn't say freedman was crap. i said he was OVERRATED. like yorkshire blue said, some people on here act like he can walk on water, when in actual fact he cannot. i think he can do a job for us but he's a last 15-20 minute player. he is far far from the god-like status he has been given on here.

Have to agree, he seems very injury prone too.

Today i thought he deserved to be subbed off, and not Theo.

TBH, i've expected more from his since he's been with us. Do we really want such a high wage earner on the books that is so injury prone?

I really want him to do well, and still do, but the jury is still out imho.

High wage earner? When the signing was made Dougie was quoted as asking RM for whatever the average wage was here and he'll sign.

He still looks unfit from the last injury at the moment so I'm not going to judge it against him over the last couple of games. I recall earlier in the season he scored a goal at Crewe where he got the ball down and ran through their defence so his legs aren't completely gone.

Are you, Rusty, Bobby and Carl a clique? No, just a group of mates. That is all, now repeat after me, "there is no clique, there is no clique".

No we are freedom fighters for the right wing, thats our only bond, down with the clique and that traitor Brown and long live Boris.
