Freedman Overated

moussa? macca? laurent? revs? betsy? everyone of these have or have the ability to be involved in or set up a great goal/opportunity this season. personally we need one more creative midfielder, or a left winger, but to say freedman is our only creative player is mad!!!

Macca ? Hardly creative !

Betsy ? Er yeah he has proved to be inspirational on the wing !

None of those you have listed are hardly overly creative players and if they are why arent we creating loads of chances!

Er missing a penalty is somewhat more irritating then a player getting back and defending and giving one away.

Come on admit it Freedman ran over your cat didnt he ?
no it's not freedman tat is annoying, it's the fans who basically sound like they want to pull his pants down!!! he is not the best thing to happen to SUFC!!! we have had better and will have better. his day is gone but people want to cling to his reputation!!!
secondly, missing a pen is bad, but the amount of pressure can be crushing espesially for a young player. now how is that worse than a fairly experinced player handling in the area? and why is our "main striker" with no pace tracking back? we all know he can't tackle

well yesterday we could have been 3-0 up by halftime, and should have killed the game 10-15 mins into the second half, but same old southend, we don't take chances and are too scared to shoot

Please give it a break. Does Ronaldo tackle, does Crouch? He's a forward for Christ sake, and one in his mid 30s and coming back from injury - get off his back!

No he isnt the best player we ever had, Collymore and Eastwood to name a couple. However he is certainly the classiest player in the current squad and only injury lets him down.

Apparently scoring the winner in the last game and setting up the winner counts for nothing though..

we are a better team when he plays, and the amount of people who disagree with you kind of reinforces that.

Again, any chance you can highlight where anyone has even come close to that? Imagine fans supporting a player, whatever next!

Eastwood and Gower both got plenty of criticism in their stays, funnily enough called lazy etc.

Whilst they werent perfect they were two of our best players over the last 5 years and just goes to show every player will have their critics...

or more importantly this? perfect example of double standards from some of our fans

With all due respect, you really need to get over yourself. Most people disagree with you, and perhaps the reason why they are not commenting on that particular "insight" from yourself is because they deem it unworthy of a response?

I did not slate Walker for missing the penalty. Although it was a bad pen, one penalty miss does not qualify him for a verbal thrashing, however I do suspect some fans have not forgiven him for the miss against Donny in the playoffs last season and that may be why he has been given a rougher ride than some.

Nevertheless I don't see how you can compare that miss to Freedman's handball yesterday. Freedman was very unfortunate in that the ball was blasted at his hand from about two yards away and he had no chance of getting out of the way - as for keeping his hands down, he was hardly waving them around his head was he? Do you seriously expect players to play with their hands rigidly by their sides or something? Ever heard of having to use your hands for balance?

This post has surely got to be a wind-up? I saw the marks given on the match report and couldn't believe it. It appears to some that unless someone charges around at 100mph they're lazy or not playing well.

Does anyone not realise the predicament we were in before a half-fit Dougie came back into the side against Bristol Rovers and turned things around? Two games later, we're apparently close to safety in mid-table.

I think the subtlety of Freedman's incredible football intelligence is lost on some people. He links up play so well, being the link between midfield and forward line. He finds space that other people can only dream about. He finds passes that other people can only dream about. He thinks 20 times as quickly as any other player on the pitch. His control is on a different plane to any other league one player I've seen. And he doesn't tackle (but then again Lineker didn't either) but he certainly doesn't seem lazy to me (unlike some of the dross we've seen over the years) - instead he seems to conserve himself and works at a level that is suitable for someone who is not quite a spring chicken.

The analogy to Sherringham is a good one.

For me, watching Freedman is worth the admission money alone. Absolute class. I'm sorry for the people who can't quite appreciate what he brings to the team. What makes the difference between great footballers and good footballers is the extra time they seem to have by being one step (or more) ahead of the rest.

I was racking my brains yesterday for comparisons with some other player in the recent Roots Hall past that had as much quality and time on the ball. Just couldn't remember who. Was it a midfield playmaker? Whelan? Or has there been anyone since?

I have just been reading this thread with increasing disbelief. I don't often post but felt that I have to endorse everything said in this quote.

I was once told that the difference between players in the different leagues was that in the Premiership players move for the ball before a pass is made, in the Championship they move as the pass is made, in League One after the pass is made and in League Two they just don't move. Well I am afraid that most players in our team are League One players and they don't often anticipate the pass.

Nothing Freedman does is aimless. His speed of thought does mean that that others don't read him (they are after all League One players) and as a result a pass may go astray because it hadn't been anticipated. Other times a pass may not come off. Even the likes of Giggs and Ronaldo (who I have been watching this afternoon) misplace passes.

The more the team play with Freedman, the more they will read him and his true worth to the team will be obvious to all who have their doubts.

I genuinely can't believe this thread has made it to 8 pages when surely it must be a wing up.

We are a much, much better side when Freedman plays then when he doesn't. Against Bristol Rovers the other week he must of only been about 65 - 70% fit yet the class just oozes out of him. His goal that day, how many players that we have had under the Tilson years would have done that? Maybe Eastwood, maybe Goater, but no-one else has that intelligence to do it.

His touch, his flicks, his passes, you can just tell by watching him that he has come from a higher division, similiar to Barnard. Just watch his movement as well, his always on the move which is quite good for a "lazy player".

I'm truly staggered by some people on here, I really am. Freedman is getting stick, Gower got stick, Goater got stick, do some people on here not appreciate true class.

Even if he was an awful player, which in my opinion he isn't, he is worth having for his experience

oooh come on we have no creativity in the team what so ever, the four you have just named are footballers on percentages they will make the odd ball that puts up through to goal or beat the odd player, but theres no JCR freddie gower bailey maher in that four, and thats not a dig at all at those four they just have different sides to there game, well maybe I shouldnt include betsy

many posts in this thread saying how freedman is quality and how he can change a game. well on tonights showing (and in my opinion it's not a lot of difference from the rest of the games i've seen him play) he was one of the worst players on the pitch. no passion what-so-ever. his legs are gone. he's trying to take players on (which is encouraging) but he's dispossed too easily. and tonight he kept "encouraging" (in my book moaning) francis, and francis lost interest and lost his head. and can someone please explain, why freedman is constantly encouraging mildy to pump the ball high in the air when freedman is never going to win the header, then to turn to the nearest man and whinge, sorry i mean "encourage". too many flicks and not enough work rate. wouldn't start him against col u. give laurent and theo a chance.

I too think Freedman has lost whatever talent he had.

Whether its the dawning realisation that he has signed for an awful side and has no confidence, or he's just past it.

He just isnt quick enough in the feet to get away from anyone and he doesnt pull into any decent positions or make any good runs. I was especially disappointed in him tonight - for somebody 'experienced' to stand back to goal waiting for the ball to be rolled to him whilst surrounded by 4 red shirts was dumb.

He should of dropped off a bit to link play, or told Robinson to make runs into the channels.

Very disappointed in him and will be no great loss when he and hopefully Barnard are released in May/June god willing...

exactly. he has no pace and can't skin a man. surely his best role would be behind the front two (laurent and theo). having him as a target man with theo running off WILL NOT WORK.

Freedman worked his socks off all night, trying many different ways and positions to break down the 5 man Crewe defence. He has plenty of pace still and uses it when necessary, conserving it when not and using brains and skill instead. You're way too harsh on him AGAIN.
