Freedman Overated

so that has to be taken into account when working out a goal to game ratio dont you agree?

If you don't count sub appearances his ratio improves to 0.44 goals/game.

Even without that, I still think 3 in 10 is still very good over a long career.

Lots of players have goal scoring spurts, but to sustain it over a career is what separates the good from the very good. This season Freedman has 5 in 11 starts, so he's batting above his average.

do you know also how many assists?out of interests

I dont agree with everything you say about Doogie, i highly doubt that what he sais on the pitch is moaning or whinging, he is purely trying to encourage the other players, or to give them some advice in how to take the game. I think it would be good to see you advise someone 20/30ft away from you without shouting, when theres 5/6/7/8/9000 fans making noise around the ground. I think Doogie's shouting and pointing is something we miss with Tilly as manager, he very rarely tends to be up there barking orders at the team, and sometimes thats what is needed.

When you've been in the game aslong as he has, you understand when some orders, or advice are needed during a game to turn it in your favour.

What a player. Last time I saw him was against Chelsea at the Bridge, and he got in so many faces and rattled so many cages when coming on with Laurent that it was a huge factor in us having some sort of belief in getting that equaliser.

You don't notice him as much as someone flashy with loads of pace, but he does the little things so well out there, like talking to those around him, creating space for others to run into, that he is an essential part of the team. And before some smart arse goes off on one, yes, I have travelled over and seen plenty of him this year to form some sort of opinion.

Freedman and Betsy for Mayor! :D

Freedman is on another level than every other player in our squad and most in this division. He won't work hard and he's got no pace, both because he's in his mid-30s. But if he was still capable of running for 90 minutes he wouldn't be at Southend United.

He's one of the most intelligent footballers I've ever seen in a Southend shirt. The runs that he does make are usually spot on and he must be a dream to play alongside as his passing and vision are way above this level. Also the idea that he's a negative influence is laughable as he's constantly encouraging those around him and giving advice to his strike partner.

Excuse me. Where you at the game today? He set up the goal. He was chasing the ball. When you say he was pointing telling others to do it he was telling them where the best places to run into are! I agree is was poor today but it is people like you that jump on people's backs when they go through a bad run. Freedman has one bad game and your saying he is so bad that he shouldn't be playing anymore! He isn't even fully fit yet so i'd like to see you do better matey! He is really helping the younger players like Robinson and Moussa. Lee Sawyer was praising him in the article in the chelsea programme for his help.

I'd love you say that to a Crystal Palace fan because they would just laugh in your face! This 0.3 goals per game is a pointless fact. If I am not mistaken Gary Hooper and Freddy Eastwood are on the same goals to games ratio.

He was brought in because he has a vast amount of football experience. He has been there and done it. He is a genius and with his football knowledge and experience he will help our younger players gain valuable knowledge that will help them in their career!

Disagreed with you elsewhere on this subject GB jnr, and will do so again here. Dougie at times appears a little lazy, that is because he tries to use skill and guile at times when he's trying not to run out of puff. When he's called upon to use his legs he usually does so very well, but at other times, if he can save some energy and use a deft flick or pass, then that's what he does.

My only criticism of Dougie is that he doesn't tackle, and as a striker, that doesn't unduly concern me. He gets in the right place at the right time, sets up loads of opportunities and drags defenders out of position. He uses all his football knowledge to help and direct younger and less experienced players, and it was good to see him and Laurent on the pitch together - weren't they pretty productive earlier in the season?

The hand ball decision was a farce, surely more a case of ball to hand. The fact he wasn't booked for it suggests that as well.

Spot on Beefy. The pass to set up the chance for Macca ( which he knows he should have and in previous seasons would have buried to put the game out of Tranny's reach ) summed it up nicely for me.

Dooooogie saw the gap and the break was on and one of the two defenders was starting to go across towards Macca. Doooogie kept the ball a few moments longer and shaped towards a move down our left . The defender followed leaving Macca in even more space whereupon Doooogie then stroked an inch perfect pass with the outside of his boot to set up the chance.

And sensibly he had 'paced' himself enough to keep the pressure on and make runs to the Tranny goal-line after 93 minutes. I felt that maybe he was stung a little by the penalty decision and noted him making a few more full-blooded tackles thereafter -he was determined to get the points today and imho was the difference between the two sides.

If Tilly ever buggered off he would be a good person to have around the club.

i dont agree with it....but everyones allowed an opinion otherwise be a rubbish message board wouldnt it.....

terrible post
Totally agree,a decent discussion on one of our players, then all of a sudden the clique arrives, and they know best again.

Ahem... irony noted, but I am not a member of 'the clique' (howsoever defined), but that does not stop me from being right...once again!

I never suggested you were part of the clique, that was your assumption,so in effect shrimpero, you are not right this time ahem.

This post has surely got to be a wind-up? I saw the marks given on the match report and couldn't believe it. It appears to some that unless someone charges around at 100mph they're lazy or not playing well.

Does anyone not realise the predicament we were in before a half-fit Dougie came back into the side against Bristol Rovers and turned things around? Two games later, we're apparently close to safety in mid-table.

I think the subtlety of Freedman's incredible football intelligence is lost on some people. He links up play so well, being the link between midfield and forward line. He finds space that other people can only dream about. He finds passes that other people can only dream about. He thinks 20 times as quickly as any other player on the pitch. His control is on a different plane to any other league one player I've seen. And he doesn't tackle (but then again Lineker didn't either) but he certainly doesn't seem lazy to me (unlike some of the dross we've seen over the years) - instead he seems to conserve himself and works at a level that is suitable for someone who is not quite a spring chicken.

The analogy to Sherringham is a good one.

For me, watching Freedman is worth the admission money alone. Absolute class. I'm sorry for the people who can't quite appreciate what he brings to the team. What makes the difference between great footballers and good footballers is the extra time they seem to have by being one step (or more) ahead of the rest.

I was racking my brains yesterday for comparisons with some other player in the recent Roots Hall past that had as much quality and time on the ball. Just couldn't remember who. Was it a midfield playmaker? Whelan? Or has there been anyone since?

Spot on Beefy. Blimey GBJ, your Dad made some pretty srange posts in his time, but nothing as bad as this.

Freedman is the only player with real quality we have at the moment. When he plays we pass the ball. Take him out of the side and its back to hoof ball. You have to look at the influence he has just by being on the pitch.
