FA Trophy Round 5 Southend United vs Sittingbourne.

We have played them before

Saturday 18th November 1922
SITTINGBOURNE 0-0 SOUTHEND UNITED
FAC 4th Qualifying Round

There must have a been a full 800 of the United’s loyal supporters, most of them wearing with a touch of pride, the colours of their team, who poured out of the station at Tilbury, crossed the River on the ferryboat, climbed the quaint old streets of Gravesend clustered together on the platform and passed the three quarters of an hour, in which they waited for a special, which would bear them to Sittingbourne, on roaring “Beaver” to any unfortunate gentleman who happened to wear a beard and in other forms of primitive but by no means ill-natured banter. Others went over by motor boat and charabanc. The homely little town of Sittingbourne was reached by one o’clock and by two, the ground at the back of the Bull Hotel was livelier than it had been for many a day. I was told that the holding capacity of the ground was 5,000 and it would have been extremely difficult to have given another hundred sight of the play. Nearly a thousand of United’s supporters made the by no means comfortable journey in order to cheer their favourites on to what they thought would be an easy victory. The crowd that jostled their way on to Midland Station were in radiant, optimistic holiday mood. These Kent Leaguers proved of sterner stuff than their opponents had credited them with being. They fought a sterling fight in which no goals were registered and they lived to fight on at the Kursaal on Wednesday
Team: Hall; Bissett and J. Evans; Reid, Booth and Price; Firth, Dobson, Goodwin, Slater and Davies.

SOUTHEND UNITED 4-2 SITTINGBOURNE

Sittingbourne had shown that although they played in the Kent League, their side certainly wasn’t lacking in talent or achievement, they were led by an ex-Chelsea centre half and a side full of ex League players who still possessed a great amount of Skill. They had won the Kent League and various cup trophies and they were a force to be reckoned with in their own circles. In the first leg Southend certainly didn’t under estimate them nor did they for the replay which was four days later, we were three goals up at half time and ended the game winning by a score of 4-2. Billy Goodwin was absent from the score sheet, but two goals by Jackie Slater another by Robert Firth and a second penalty of the season for Jimmy Evans.
Team: Hall; Bissett and J.E vans; Reid, Booth and Price; Firth, Dobson, Goodwin, Slater and Davies

This will be an absolutely huge game for them. As they are on fire and scoring for fun, they have nothing to lose, which means we could be on the wrong end of an upset. We need to take this threat really seriously!
I agree with you, Sittingbourne are advertising for Coach Sponsors so can they provide travel as cheaply as possible. Their Local Press is all over this match, would think it guarantees a good following and a real Cup Tie.

A decent draw and what the cup is all about. Playing teams you'd never normally play.

They may be decent in their own league but should be easily dispatched of we take the game seriously and play a strong side. Given the side we played against southport, I can't see us not taking this game seriously.

Fitness will play a big part.

I hope the club opens more stands and tries for a decent crowd.

I wonder what the record is for a tie in this competition?

Was it a good game JC? @Cricko

I wonder what the record is for a tie in this competition?
Hmm that's a hard one to find out.
Not including finals Wrexham had over 9k for a semi-final v Notts County, but before they were famous their highest FA Trophy crowd was only about 3,500.

It's been going since 1970 so there may have been some higher non-final crowds.

Looking at the 5th round ties we should get the highest crowd. Maybe if Tamworth get through to play at Kidderminster that will be a decent crowd

Out of interest. Is the semi final in this competition a 2 legged affair?
Need to win this plus another round before the semi final , this is just the last 16. Looking at the draw one that stands out for me is the Aldershot v Boringwood game, Hoping Aldershot beat the thugs from Boringwood, Also good to see ELTango still in it even if they have FGR next round very interesting tie also .I quite enjoy these trophy matches playing against teams we very rarely play, looking back its been 102 years since we played Sittingbourne, I hope Maher and co treat this seriously and play our strongest side, sure he wont though, and yes this could be a real banana skin match, they seem to play on the break which means they will sit back and defend and break , so should have some speedy players in their side .Think we will get a decent crowd for this , hopefully prices will be no more than 10 quid for adults half price pensioners and a quid for kids under 15

Sittingbourne have got here for a reason and I suspect they won’t be underestimated. Given their perceived support I think we might get 3 stands open for this one. I’m guessing a crowd of around 4,500.

Somewhere along the line IF we avoid the banana skin it would be great to draw Kidderminster. As SUFC managerial sackings go Brown’s first was up there among the harshest.

Not sure about that. Think we were on a bad run and Brown lost the dressing room.

Never understand managers losing the dressing room, it’s not like they move and they usually have a sign on the door saying either “home” or “away”.
Agreed on the first point, less convinced about the second though that was certainly the speculation at the time
