Will Daniel Bentley go in this transfer window?

I don't think that was the case; there were plenty who at the time, myself included, who would have snapped West Ham's figurative arm off at the time for that bid.

It seems to me, that a lot of our fans have inflated (biased) opinons on the value of our players. For me, 1.25m for a keeper in the last year of his contract, only ever having played in the bottom tier of the football league, is a pretty good offer. The fact that Huddersfield sold their still young in goalkeeping terms, keeper, who has played regularly in the Championship and has represented England at several age group for a fee only slightly larger (reported) would support this as well.

Sorry, memory playing tricks- it was £150,000 not 175,000. Here is the thread from the time where it is quite clear that the majority thought we should NOT take the bid. So my main point still stands , with the accompanying evidence

I have been told that if he stays they will be looking at an extended contract to obviously protect the club, but allow Dan the right move when it materializes. I was surprised by this info myself, but it now appears that he is staying. This from someone who is involved in contracts.

That can not possibly be true. Every time myself or anyone on here has suggested this could happen over the last couple of months they have been constantly told that their are idiots.

Indeed. Same as if we had let him go for 1.25m many would have said it wasnt enough.

We can go through this all again in January now!

Come January we could be sitting on top of L1 and all our players will want to stay (hoping)

There'd be a good reason for Dan to sign a new contract with us; he'd start earning more straight away rather than having to wait until he joins his next club. He's might still be on a comparatively low wage compared to some of the other players having come up through the ranks rather than being brought in.

Surely that is easily remedied? Pay the bloke big bucks, he's worth it. I don't know how much that would be, but probably Rigsby will know.

The club should protect there assets an offer a very good contract to Dan Bentley with the promise that he can talk to any club that meets the club's valuation. It's the best option all round.

The club can offer what they like, the problem is Dan doesnt have to accept it.

Indeed thats the only way to get him to stay, offer a big increase in return for a guarantee he wont be able to leave for less than a million or so.

Only a week to go until he can go out on loan until the end of the season with a permanent deal at the end of it.

:winking:

I honestly think that Ron Martin genuinely thinks we are going for promotion this year and he wants to keep hold of his best assets. When you read what every player that has come here has said, they all have the impression that Southend are going places despite what us as fans think. Martin and Brown both said in the middle of last year that we can achieve back to back promotions so I can't see Ron selling Dan. Within his bubble he sees us as non-selling championship club. I think that is the kind of vision Brown iludes to when convincing players to come here too. As I say, regardless of how realistic we see the club.

Bents to stay! 3 year deal on Wednesday :winking:

They're probably all shown pictures of our impending new stadium.

It would be rude of me to ask. Obviously we could not compete with QPR or Hull and as Jam_Man says he does not have to accept. Who knows where he will be in a year, but in the meantime we have a rare opportunity to watch a brilliant local talent.

I will say his ambition is more to do with goal keeping than money and that is to be admired. He sent an honest message to everyone behind the goal on Monday. The window has now closed so lets get right behind Dan and allow him to do what he does best. More performances like his last and wont just be our points tally that shoots up but the bank balance as well:winking:

Indeed, never going to stop, but isnt it just 93 day loans at that point ?

Actually I think you're right about the length of loan.

We had this situation a few years back when two of our better players (then-skipper Stephen Dawson and Charlie Daniels) had contracts running out at the end of the season and plenty of interest in them. They both ended up staying past the end of the window as we fended off interest whilst we tried to tie them down on new contracts, but to no avail. Both ended up out on loan until the January window and the deals were made permanent on the 1st.

Obviously this situation is slightly different in the sense that Bentley will command a much greater fee than either of those players when out of contract at the end of the season, but it's certainly a viable possibility if the club are going to concede defeat on the contract situation.

I think as others have alluded to, a renewed contract with a reasonable buyout clause would be the best solution for all concerned. I feel that we have to be willing to increase his salary substantially and see that as an investment. At the end of the day, if we have to pay him an extra £1500 a week to get a signature (figure plucked out of the air!), that would be 75k extra by the end of the season but might mean that we increase his value by another 500k in the summer.

Of course, there is the other alternative that Dan might want to stay with us for a bit longer! Bear in mind he is young still, and grew up locally, has been with us for a long time and I suspect is pretty proud to play for his local club, so it is possible that he knows he has good things coming his way and is better off as no 1 in a league 1 side than no 3 in the championship! It is also possible he could be willing to take the chance on delaying the big move for a while... And also possible that signing a new contract is in both his and the club's interests!

Nice optimism but he wanted a move or he would have signed a new deal already.

I'd hope he will sign one now the move didn't happen, we will see.

Not a chance. He'll stay to the end of the season then walk away as a free agent and quadruple his salary overnight.
As excellent a keeper as he is , and a decent local lad , the club are crazy to wave goodbye to over a million quid.

Paying players big money was the reason we nearly went bust and ended up spending five years in the basement league. Dan Bentley is a very good goalkeeper but no player is worth breaking the bank for.

Who were these players on big money and how much ?

We averaged 10,000 in the championship which should have catered for the extra wages,I suggest these players were never overpaid but instead poor management from the top.
