Who were these players on big money and how much ?

We averaged 10,000 in the championship which should have catered for the extra wages,I suggest these players were never overpaid but instead poor management from the top.

All well and good, but those same players on 3k a week (like Barrett/Clarke were) then continued to be on the same wage when we were relegated and we continued to pay a wage budget for two seasons meant for the 10k crowds when we were getting far less.

There was poor management at the top, which was to overpay players when we were in League One.

Blames lies firmly with those who agreed such contracts, very dumb without having a demotion clause.

I'm very please Dan is going to be here until at least January BUT I do think now we have screwed ourselves over a little bit. If someone comes in for him in January then the fee is going to be a lot lower or he will leave for free at the end of the season (with a slight fee for coming through the youth etc). Saying that, say we did get 1 mill in January we wouldn't use it to get new players it would just pay off some dept somewhere. So that makes me think oh well we won't get much but at least Dan will keep us in the league.

A good outcome would be either he leaves in Jan/summer and then gets loaned back to us for the rest of the season or another whole season depending on us being in league 1. Whatever happens I just hope its not another Moshni mistake where we didn't cash in at the right time.

Indeed, thats the point Jai was making.

With Bentley its a bit different though, if we were to give him an extra £1000 a week in order to be able to sell him for £500,000 more then it pays for itself, as long as we have the cash flow to support it.

Maybe Ron is playing the long game?,by offering Bents a 3 year deal which of course means any club will need to pay more on any transfer fee.

Either way Ron is playing a dangerous game.

Ron has little control, its down to what Bentley wants and he wont accept a 3 year deal without a get out clause which is what will decide how much he goes for rather than the length of it.

The best we will get is to offer him a pay rise in return for him signing a deal with a minimum release deal so he still gets his move at a reasonable amount.

Whether he does that remains to be seen, he might be happy to just sit on his current salary in the hope of going in January.

Phil Brown interview just on sky sports news, discussing Bentley and his transfer saga. He praised him on how he handled the transfer saga & just got on with his training etc, & thinks he will definatley play at a higher level. Just a matter of time.

Brown said something along the lines of, "£1.25 million is alot of money to this club & I dont know what it will take for the chairman to sell him".
Leaves me to conclude that Brown would have snatched the money from QPR, Forest or Hull.. but Ron is holding out for a larger value.

Better hope that someone buys him for around £1m in Jan. Or he signs a contract extension but is given the guarantee he'll b sold.

He will be a hell of a lot more attractive to more clubs if he is available on a free.

Why is this starting to feel like the wrong end of a pineapple up the rear end time? Tribunal fee looming? I do hope not.

Is anybody really surprised he rejected a new contract? He can (and will) play at a higher level and the club (and its fans) should feel proud we can produce players of his quality. By rejecting a contract, he is going to be free agent in the summer and his future is now firmly in his own hands. By signing any sort of contract, he would have been reliant on the club accepting what they feel is a suitable offer. I say fair play to him, you cannot say he has acted unprofessionally in any way and I fully expect him to give 100% every time he feels on a Southend shirt until the time comes that he leaves.

Without reading through the whole lot can anyone give me a decent reason why we would turn down £1.25m? For a club of our size that is an exceptional amount of money, especially for someone out of contract at the end of the season. Yes I know tribunals but they never go in the smaller clubs favour. Feels like we've dicked ourselves out of a windfall.

Don't get me wrong, great to see him between the sticks and he might be the reason we stay up this season but is that worth 7 figures?
