Was speaking to a Wolves fan at The Ricoh last night and he told me that Dan would be signing for them today. Now this is most likely bollocks but he seemed on the level. Said that Dan would be joining Wolves who would be loaning him back to us till the end of the season.
Think this is unlikely but who knows?
When Tom Bradshaw was going through a similar will-he-or-won't-he phase in May, Dean Smith told Bradshaw that by not signing a new deal all he was doing was costing himself money.
Bentley's in a similar scenario now. Regardless of whether someone stumps up the money to buy him today or in January or the end of the season until then he's on his current wages. A new deal would be on bigger wages. Until he gets sold he earns more monyey at RH.
I think it's generally accepted he's too good to stay at RH long or even medium term. Someone qwill be winning to pay what we're willing to sell for. Which means we'll get money for him. By returning some of that money to him up front, we can then engineer it so that we (the club he loves too) can also benefit from his move. He should simply sign a new deal because it's not actually related to whether someone comes in with a bid for him.
A £2.5m release clause doesn't necessarily mean we wouldn't sell him for less, it just means he agrees to leave it completely up to us to turn down.
By signing a new contract he would initially earn more but in the long term it is likely to be negated by the options that would be open to him if he let his contract run down. I am pretty sure he would get a lot more offers if he was out of contract rather than a team having to pay a fee of 2m upwards. So from his point of view, and it is sad to say, he is better off not signing a new deal.
Not to mention, if a club only has to pay a nominal fee decided by the FA (he's under 24), as opposed to a transfer fee, then they have more funds available for the wages/signing on fee - this also benefits Bentley not signing a new deal.
I for one think this is what will happen now, the bids we turned down from Hull & QPR are of a size we are very unlikely to see again. We'll either lose him in Jan for a much smaller fee (400/500k ish) as he'll only have 6 months on his contract, or worse, for a nominal fee when his contract expires at the end of the season.
This feels a little bit like the Mohsni deal, where Ron has priced himself out of a decent transfer fee again, on a player in his last year.
IN fairness, at the time most of us thought that £175,000 (the rumored price at the time) was insulting . Most in hear, myself included thought that West ham would come bcak with a much better offer- so I certainly don't blame Ron for that . At the same time none of us can see in to the future so , and none of us know the details of the QPR bid, or the thought process in turning it down. So to imply that Ron has got it wrong again is is not necessarily correct.

I don't think that was the case; there were plenty who at the time, myself included, who would have snapped West Ham's figurative arm off at the time for that bid.
It seems to me, that a lot of our fans have inflated (biased) opinons on the value of our players. For me, 1.25m for a keeper in the last year of his contract, only ever having played in the bottom tier of the football league, is a pretty good offer. The fact that Huddersfield sold their still young in goalkeeping terms, keeper, who has played regularly in the Championship and has represented England at several age group for a fee only slightly larger (reported) would support this as well.
In January, clubs can speak to him without permission from the club, they can basically agree a contract to be signed next summer. Because he will only have 6 months left on his contract. So I don't think we will sell him in January when clubs can get him on a free.
So Bentley stays.... who saw that coming a few months ago!?
Great news and a massive boost for the season (even if we do end up selling him in Jan!)

Id personally rather have him the season and get 500k for him in tribunal
Crikey, just imagine the thread that would spawn on here.
