Without reading through the whole lot can anyone give me a decent reason why we would turn down £1.25m? For a club of our size that is an exceptional amount of money, especially for someone out of contract at the end of the season. Yes I know tribunals but they never go in the smaller clubs favour. Feels like we've dicked ourselves out of a windfall.

Don't get me wrong, great to see him between the sticks and he might be the reason we stay up this season but is that worth 7 figures?
Ron must have been gambling with very high stakes and thought a larger offer would still come. Looks like it's backfired.

we get him for a whole season and will get a fee via tribunal if the 2 clubs cannot agree the amount. The top amount as far as I can see is 6.5 million for Daniel Sturridge in 2010 but this might be eclipsed by Danny Ings this year. We'll never get these sums but we'll get something. Daniel at the moment is probably key to our success this year so I think it's a rational decision. As others have said Ted is probably a year away from being able to take over.

Those slating RM seem to forget the last QPR offer was presented to the board and rejected, not by RM so give the guy a fricken break!!

Bentley was never going to be first choice at QPR so if he's gutted about not going, be pleased you're playing first team football and if you want to go and sit on the bench in January or next season, go then and good luck

This has also puzzled me,Maybe it will ruin the accounts?

Isn't "rejecting a contract" simply a way of telling management that you want a higher salary in the here-and-now?

A keeper at his stage needs games. 50 a season.. If he doesn't want to stay post contract then fine.. If we are in with a shout of the play offs then play him.. If not as soon as we are safe get the next man in.
Personally I think he should re sign with a get out clause .. As Southend made him he owes the club a transfer fee and he will get games relentlessly.
If he goes good luck but expect some bench warming. Having said that he is prob good enough to hack it and will be thinking about earning 20k a week.

Absolute rubbish. He has been a fantastic keeper for you, has been entirely professional during these negotiations when it would have been easy to have stropped off like Berahino and he will command a transfer fee at the end of his contract anyway. He owes you nowt.

He doesn't owe us anything. He played a key part in our promotion last season and will be key player again this season. Playing as best as he can for the rest of the season is all he owes us. It will be a shame to miss out on a transfer fee but Bentley certainly doesn't owe us that money himself.

Overall, consider this - where would we be now had he not progressed at SUFC?

We'll be lucky to get £200k at a tribunal. Dan was never going to sign a new contract, it made absolutely no sense from his point of view. We've basically donr ourselves out of a million quid by rejecting this bid. I expect Dan will be a good pro and wait it out. He's done nothing wrong in my eyes. If he keeps us up, you could argue the gamble paid off. Time will tell.

A tribunal would take into account things such as games played, fee commanded, size of the two clubs involved, how much interest was in the player, previous bids. Then they can add almost incentive bonuses so, with Luke Garbutt of Everton, every 5-10-20-30-40 senior games played Everton pay Leeds 150k. They'll also pay £200k if he plays for England

so actually we could be better off going through a tribunal, however I don't think we'd get a sell on clause which for me is a massive thing!

Who were these players on big money and how much ?

We averaged 10,000 in the championship which should have catered for the extra wages,I suggest these players were never overpaid but instead poor management from the top.
Check the accounts....
it was not the Championship season which was the reall issue (we just broke even with the Freddy money) it was the following year, still paying championship wages in league one which did us .

Yes totally agree Jai. I think the club is found wanting yet again when it comes to sensible financial management. We could have secured a decent fee for Mohsni a couple of years ago and with Dan this summer. Lower league clubs need to do this to survive. I have absolutely no confidence in the way the football club is run at all!

From the echo story

  • Frustrated not to have got his move away
  • He will not agree an extension to his deal
  • Will keep giving his all for the club

Thought that would be the way it went.. Can't begrudge him not signing a extension, hopefully a tribunal will see us right next year.

Really all the club have to ask, maybe DB is worth say, 15 points by hanging on to him, but he runs his contract down and goes for nowt. At the end of the day, if we make the playoffs, it may be worth it, if not, then we have lost 1m. The same really if that supposed 15 points keeps us up.

Hindsight is an easy tool to make judgements on.

Many on here were valuing him well above the offers we received, if Ron had accepted 1.25m he would have been criticised for not holding out for more.

We wont lose the whole money, we will still get a fee through tribunal, what I dont know but Id hope for 500k
