Brexit negotiations thread

why are the Irish government and the EU playing with lives? They want the border to stay as it is - which is what currently works. Surely its the UK government playing with fire - wanting change but not actually knowing what/how to change it.
My understand is that the UK side want the border to be left as it is and evolving if/when big issues are needing reacting to BUT the other side want legislation and crystal ball style agreements put in place which are not required and might be counter productive or even dangerous.
For example if they want an agreement that there will be NO (zero, none) border checks of goods or passports would that mean that if a border was being abused (or used) for smuggling of contraband, illegal persons or products, or terrorist purposes then it would be ignored "under agreement."
They, Eire and EU ought to know that by wanting to move the customs border to the Irish Sea crossing that would be a huge issue for many, as well as being unworkable.

Edit; as OUGHT the UK Brexit people. Idiots on both sides?

but this statement doesn't make sense:

'If the status quo and fine balance in the province is disrupted then the uneasy, fledgling peace WILL be destroyed.
IMO the Irish Guv and the EU are playing with lives'

The Irish are not looking to disrupt anything - they want it to remain the same. It's the UK who want to stop freedom of movement of people and goods between the EU (Ireland) and UK (NI). This is exactly the kind of thing that David Davis should have come into with a workable solution. To be fair to May she has taken up the result and had to try to plan around it from there. Davis, Rees-Mogg and in particular Farage (who has spent his whole adult life studying the way the EU works) should easily be able to state a solution to each of the issues that leaving the EU throws up. This is everything those people wanted - how can they possible not have the answers to hand?

The whole sodding lot of them should resign, it's a complete disarster.

My prediction is a vote of no confidence before the end of January, another election by march, Corbyn walking it and a complete u-turn on leaving (I genuinely hope) I still wont vote Labour but then again, I just wont vote for the first time since I was 18. But surely, surely it couldn't be any worse.

Without doubt the most disastrous PM in living memory which is hardly a surprise when she made such a balls up of the Home Office. DUP will pull the rug and the whole thing comes tumbling down on top of her - good! she deserves it.
Careful what we all wish for though, the thought of Corbyn and Abbott in charge of domestic and foreign affairs doesn't quite do it for me.
Funny really, 18 months ago everyone was talking about Labour splitting, now it appears the Tories are about to do the very same thing.

Abbott in charge of running a bath fills me with dread but this lot? And I thought Brown was useless.

Some of us can remember Alec Douglas-Home.:omg::cricko:

I see in the "popular" press, the rumour is the Davis is being lined up by senior Tories to oust May. The bloke shouldn't be in charge of a kids bicycle, let alone the country at one of it's most important junctures in history.

Sorry to come over all barna - but a colleague of mine went to school with Davis and describes him as a bit of a duffer (or words to that effect)

It’s gonna be cancelled isn’t it

Sadly I think it'll happen and it'll be an absolute **** show - at least for us normal folks. The millionaires and billionaires who instigated and manipulated Brexit will probably end up being even richer.

I think this government is hanging by a thread and the DUP are lurking in the shadows with a pair of scissors. Like Benfleet A1 I fully expect a GE early next year. For the first time I've now got real doubts that the will of the majority of the british people will be honoured. What ever happens I think this will go on and on until we all kick the bucket.

Nigel Farage on Twitter: 'A deal in Brussels is good news for Mrs May as we can now move on to the next stage of humiliation.' And his supporters' comments are much less polite.

Leave or Remain - very few people seem happy with how this is panning out. Predictably.

So everyone born in NI will remain EU citizenship? How is fair that NI gets a different deal than Wales, Scotland & England? I can see this all unravelling, especially when Sturgeon gets involved, not to mention some factions of the DUP are still unhappy.

Going exactly as I expected. The criminals in Brussles are desperate to keep their enterprise so were always going to make it difficult. Nor does it suit most of the incompetents in Westminster.

Still that's why we voted out.....To have less expensive jobs for the boys and girls. Because we will all be much better off in the long run.

The remoaning just proves how right the 65% of Southend were because your incapable of one single solution to any problem

No one seems to be happy. The Tories are trying to spin it as a 'win' but no one is taking the bait. Boris Johnson said the EU could go whistle for the money just a couple of weeks ago and now is saying the deal involving a 50 billion pay out is a great victory.

I was stuck on a train so read all 390 replies to this tweet. 389 were not pleased, 1 may have been - it didn't quite make sense.

The words of Boris that no one seems to approve of:

Congratulations to PM for her determination in getting today's deal. We now aim to forge a deep and special partnership with our European friends and allies while remaining true to the referendum result - taking back control of our laws, money and borders for the whole of the UK.

who is incapable of one single solution to any problem? What problems specifically do you want solving? What solutions have you come up with?

You'll no doubt remember that Keynes said, he preferred short term and medium term solutions to economic problems, "since in the long term we're all dead." :winking:

As was said on QT last time. It's always the same. The one's that don't get their way in any decision making process are always the ones to scream, shout and stamp their feet the most. I keep an eye on what's going on in here but refrain from posting now as it's all so predictable and if I'm honest I don't feel the need. I'm confident that Brexit will happen. I'm also confident hat we'll get there in the long run and that we'll all be better off for it.

Has anything about Brexit surprised me to date? No not really. I was always fully aware of how hard the obstacles would be up until now and how difficult they're going to be going forward. What has surprised me however is the constant bleating and whining on here from the same old faces. As if any of it is going to make one iota of difference. It's not. Example, quite some time ago BoJo made a silly throw away remark about the EU could whistle for their divorce settlement and now, weeks and weeks later, the fact we are now going to pay a divorce bill (something all intelligent people knew we would have to do anyway) and he was wrong it's brought up on here and made out to be some devastating lie bigger than the Profumo affair that should kill off the government. Daft, silly and unprofessional yes. Worth crying into your Cornflakes over? No. I'm all for debate but it's not really that is it. It's just moaning and moaning about decisions that have been made that are totally out of your control. Pointless.

Come on people. Enough now. After 2019/20/21 and we're all out of jobs, the NHS has collapsed, the bins haven't been emptied for weeks and the pound in your pocket is worth about 30p then by all means come back and crow on and on to your hearts content about how you all told us so. Until then just get on with enjoying and loving life and those around you and let those that can, do. All you're doing now is making yourselves look like bitter and twisted old lefties :winking:

Oh, and a Merry Shrimper Xmas to you all. Even the Socialists
