Brexit negotiations thread

.....and that will open a can of worms.

If I have understood what the newstands are telling me....

the border will be in the Irish Sea, effectively mean Ireland is one island.
there will be no customs checks between north and south, (which opens up a can of worms with WTO rules)
not sure whether there will be customs checks at the sea border for those going to UK to N Ireland. (technicaly, we could end up in a position where UK citizens are subject to customs checks whilst never leaving the UK)

It's probably the only answer to solve the Good Friday Agreement issue. However, the devil will be in the details - and they don't exist yet.

Lots of questions for those who voted Leave to consider, I suspect.
Soverienty, taking control of borders, membership of the customs union??

Nothing to worry about, its just more from project fear. We had the same situation a while back when neither of us were in the in the EU and during the troubles. Anyway for centuries the border country has always had its own rules, even law less in places. Not a lot will change.

The can of worms is open......

You can also add "taking control" to the list. I think.

So, apparently it's the DUP who scuppered the deal (before any Brexiters in parliament could have their say) bringing scathing criticism from Varakdar..........

Nick Gutteridge @nick_gutteridge Ouch! Varadkar: 'The responsibility of any prime minister is to ensure that they can follow through on agreements that they make and we are surprised and disappointed that they haven’t been able to.'

The reaction on the money markets seem to indicate that it's not dead, just yet. I noticed that the euro had gone up to just above 1.14 around lunch time. I tried to bring a bit of money across at that rate but 'transferwise' had gone down ( presumably due to the volume of business) When news of the failure to strike a deal came through it slumped back to around 1.1350. If it had been dead and buried I would have expected a drop towards 1.11. We shall see...................... but the climb downs (over the divorce bill and Ireland) May has been obliged to make are a whole other issue and it will be interesting to see how it will go down at home.

all parts of the UK had an equal vote at the Referendum - (apart from those who are pleased that the DUP could derail the whole thing) does anyone think it is right that one party in one province seem to be allowed to veto what had been agreed between the government and the EU?

Let's face it the DUP pulles out the plug on the deal. It's a pity Mrs May didn't run the deal past them first -after all she is supposed to be in coalition with them.

I want A deal done BUT have been to Ulster and the deal on offer was not reasonable. If you have not been there, and worked there you won't understand.

that means the vast majority of people in the UK wouldn't understand - so May needs to explain it, ideally with some time travel involved so that those who haven't worked in NI can know what they are actually voting on

Been to Ireland a couple of times, though I suppose that wouldn't count for you.:winking:

Please explain why "the deal on offer was not reasonable",in your opinion.

Simple answer, obvious too IMO, ANYTHING that treats The North as a separate state from the rest of the UK is seen as the thin end of the wedge.
If the status quo and fine balance in the province is disrupted then the uneasy, fledgling peace WILL be destroyed.
IMO the Irish Guv and the EU are playing with lives - literally - with their demands over a border that has always been porous, all be it in a minor smuggling way.
I also think the Eire Guv are using it (the discussions) in a very political way to try for a greater unity/power over The North.

I'd imagine the DUP would love a 50ft high brick wall between NI & ROI. They'd no doubt paint it lovely shades of orange.

Sorry MK but such a cavalier and throw away thought is, or ought to be consigned to school boy, comic reading, play ground chit chat. Hundreds, thousands, of lives have been ruined by the events in Ireland; probably millions if history is taken back to dark "colonial" years: not really funny? Peace has started to take root and for it to be "lost" over greed and failing to find common ground for trade/money is incomprehensible to me.

I agree, peace has taken root. The mess that is Brexit & The ultra-conservative DUP seem to want to undo all of that hard work which is funny peculiar rather than funny haha. Build some sort of wall, and I can see the whole thing unravelling and the rebirth of the IRA.

But we got our country back.......

Davis has got to go on the basis of this morning's committee session, right?

The whole sodding lot of them should resign, it's a complete disarster.

My prediction is a vote of no confidence before the end of January, another election by march, Corbyn walking it and a complete u-turn on leaving (I genuinely hope) I still wont vote Labour but then again, I just wont vote for the first time since I was 18. But surely, surely it couldn't be any worse.

why are the Irish government and the EU playing with lives? They want the border to stay as it is - which is what currently works. Surely its the UK government playing with fire - wanting change but not actually knowing what/how to change it.
